WF Thursday 7/31 Do You Hear What I Hear?

Close your eyes. Now imagine entering the front door of Wee Friends. What do you hear?

Make your way over to the round table. Do you hear the hammer? Or is it the accordion? Is it a pleasant sound or a loud, intrusive sound? Do you hear the pages of the book turning or the rhythm sticks creating tempos? Do you like loud sounds or soft sounds? Is your voice soft or loud?

These are things we talked about this morning. As friends went about their work, we encouraged them to be aware of the sounds of their environment. And their own voices.

Is it natural for a 3-6 year old to let one conversation finish before they begin another one? It’s another question we pondered. We used WF Life skill Song “When We Interrupt Our Friends (and teachers!)” to illustrate.

As we sang , several of our friends continued their interesting conversations about the Wee World. Onward we go….hearing sound….speaking our voice…..and learning to listen.

Happy Wednesday!

It was glitter paint day!

Nora and Saskia worked together to create individual artwork. Nora turned to Saskia and said, “Pretty!”

We were very into looking in our jar to see the color and glitter. Lulu got some on her fingers and pointed up and said, “Messy!”

Lucy and Maya were offered sensory paint as well. They both stood at the gate anxiously awaiting their turn. Lucy used the paint brush while Maya wasn’t too sure about the project at first. She touched the paint on the paper and soon realized that she didn’t like the paint on her finger! We all have different sensory limitations Smile. Miss Marty likes to indulge herself in sensory play more than Miss Mindy does. Sometimes the ooey gooey part of sensory play is not for everyone!

Lucy got a work out in this morning! She zoomed down the hill while keeping her balance. Afterwards, she charged up the hill just to do it all over again.

Anna enjoyed the bright sunshine this afternoon while Tate and Lucy worked with chalk on paper and the cement.

For breakfast, children had kix and banana. Lunch consisted of melted cheese tortillas, broccoli, and banana. PM snack was Tami’s homemade blueberry and peach oatmeal. Yum!

WF Wednesday 7/30 Sense of Smell

What does your nose look like? Is it wide or narrow? Long or short? Is it dry or wet? Do you wipe it? Blow it? Pick it? Itch it? How does your nose smell things? These are a few of the questions we began our day with.

Then we got to sniffin’. Yummy things and yucky things. New things and really old things.

WF Tuesday 7/29 Taste

Tongue knows sour,
Bitter, sweet,
Tongue’s taste buds,
Can’t be beat…
My tongue,
The organ,
Gives me taste,
Without it,
Foods,
Would be a waste!

We talked about the sense of taste today. We learned how the tongue and the teeth work together to create songs and speech. We discussed SALIVA and PAPILLAE (puh-PILL-ee): the bumps on our tongue that help us taste. Then, we experimented with salty, sweet, sour and bitter!

Our fingers were at work measuring, squishing and straining rice. We used our ears to compare the sound of the rice falling with the sound of our rain stick. Many friends used their eyes to guess which objects match the corresponding picture.

Happy Monday!

It was a lovely (slightly chilly) morning! Our sibling pairs were sticking together today! Tate, Maya, and Lucy love interacting with their older sibling as well as their friends.

Lately, Eve, Sloane, and Elliot have been helping out their younger siblings on the bikes, especially with the turning.

Maya loved playing in the rocks. She took her shovel and transferred rocks from one bucket to another.

Anna was all smiles today since she has learned to turn from her back to her stomach. Yay! She’s working on what she needs to do once she’s turned over, like getting her arms out from underneath her body Smile.

For breakfast, children had toast with butter and banana. Lunch consisted of whole grain noodles with kidney beans, banana, and mixed vegetables. PM snack was sweet peppers and hard boiled eggs.

WF Monday 7/28 Touch

We started off this week with an exploration of the five senses. Today we focused on Touch. Using the sensors in the tips of our fingers, we squished 6 balloons and guessed what was inside of them. Then we matched the balloon to a corresponding drawing.

Over this week, we plan to fill in the missing parts of our puppet, as other senses are explored.

With a hook and five fingers, Finn constructed a pirate ship. Emma’s sensors twisted and turned the hard toy garage knobs. Sophie’s sensors squeezed the edges of the soft hammock as she held on tightly. Sloane sensors and arms, carefully held and guided Tate. Clara’s sensors reached for, squished and picked apart cucumbers. One of Owen’s sensors gripped the bottom of the rain stick, whole the other shook its middle to create music. Elizabeth’s sensors immediately identified the thick, squishy balloon filled with paint. Emerson’s sensors carefully turned page after page as she read books. Elliott’s sensors opened and closed scissors. Eren’s sensors maneuvered a sticky label.  Aislinn used her sensors to hoist heavy rocks and then used her pincer and thumb to pick up a rolly polly. Eve used the tips of her sensors to peel away a sticker from its backing. Ellie’s sensors embraced and sent out waves of love through hugs.

Happy Friday!

Blossoming language is something that is consistent throughout the toddler years. I’ve found a couple articles and websites that offer information on the topic. While everyone has their own opinion as to how children learn and prosper, the important thing is that we lead by example.

“Just as young children need nourishing food to build physical strength, they also need linguistic nutrition for optimal development of language and cognitive abilities.” (Why not talk to children?! It’s so fun! Smile)

For breakfast, children had whole wheat bagels with butter and banana. Lunch consisted of flat bread with tuna, PPC blueberries, and green beans. PM snack was whole wheat english muffin with cream cheese and raisins.
