WF Daily Explorations Friday July 15

Happy Friday!

This morning we started our day asking the question “How many people are in your family?” Several friends charted their answers with check marks. We then played a felt board math game “How Many Feet Are in the Bed?” asking friends to add up how many feet would be in the bed if all their family members were all tucked in!

007

Miss Charlotte delivered 13 dozen eggs this morning! Don’t forget they are always for sale! Wee Friends created an assembly line system and helped her put them in the fridge.

008 011 010

We learned the song “We Are Family” and used instruments to practice a 4 count rhythm.

“We are Family! 2-3-4- I’ve got all my Wee Friends with me!”

013

Before rest time, Melinda read Dad and Pop, discussing who dads and pops are and their roles in the family. 018

016

For lunch we served Miss Charlotte’s farm fresh eggs, scrambled, watermelon, green beans and toasted whole wheat pita. Some comments we heard about the eggs were:

“Miss Charlotte’s chickens sure know how to make good eggs!”

“Those potatoes are really good!”

“These eggs are crazy good!”

For snack, we’ve planned blueberry muffins with fresh blueberries! Thanks Alexandra G.!

Have a great weekend!

This was a great morning! We put out pretend fires in our log cabin house, made a feast in our playhouse, sang songs, and watered our garden plants and flowers.
For lunch today we had egg salad on wholewheat bread, garden salad, and a fresh mixed fruit salad. It was delicious!
This afternoon we will play some matching and “I Spy” games outside.
Enjoy the weekend.

WF Daily Explorations Thursday July 14

MG 0578

We started our week with the question “What Makes A Family?” We have since explored and had conversations about all sorts of families: families of books, letters, shapes, humans, insects to name a few. We determined that love is a common thread in families. Yesterday we read The Middle Child Blues which led us to a discussion of ‘the middle’. We explored our environment to find things ‘in the middle’. We discussed birth order and which of our WF are the middle child. As our older friends journaled, math and science (and philosophical perhaps?!) concepts arose such as “can you measure love?” and “which square is in the middle”. Today we noticed that our friends have been creating houses out of boxes and blankets during their imaginative family play. We created a message board asking “How many floors are in your house? How many rooms are in your house?” A few friends then moved to the art table to sketch their own homes with pencils and markers. F.3.32 Ask questions about families. F.2.13 Break apart a whole quantity of something into a set. F.4.13 Follow instructions to place an object “between” two things. F.5.4 Use any descriptive word or gesture to express amount or size. F.3.14 Give information about where she lives (e.g., street, telephone number, house). F.3.16 Describe features of familiar places (e.g., buildings, stores).

The tumblers tumbled and we all enjoyed a gorgeous morning outside!

For lunch we served whole wheat tortillas with refried beans and cheese, fresh lettuce (from our garden!) with cucumbers/ranch and granny smith apples.

Have a great day!

WWF Daily Explorations, Thursday 7.14.11

Good afternoon!

Today WWF begun their day painting. We used the colors purple and orange to reinforce color names and and the exploration of color mixing. We used rollers, tongue depressors and fingers as painting tools. Children came up with their own ways of using these tools creating lots of different textures on their papers.

Outside WWF spent time watering the garden, riding their bikes, playing in the sandbox and comparing their bellies!! 🙂

For lunch they had fresh green beans from our garden, cheese and tuna quesadillas and bananas.

Today’s story time was special!!! Chris, Marty’s husband, was here and read several stories to the children. They enjoyed his company and gentle but fun reading style.

Miss Lisa is still out, we miss her! and would like to thank Chris and Brianna for their wonderful help yesterday and today.

Have a wonderful day!!!

Paulina, Marty, Lisa and Amy.

WF Daily Explorations, Wednesday 7.13.11

What a beautiful day! We have opened the windows and are enjoying the cool, refreshing breeze blowing through our classroom.

075

This morning, most of the children spent a large amount of time using liquid water colors to paint themselves, family members and a variety of warriors & princesses.

020

In other parts of the classroom, children were found in housekeeping playing doctor, in the truck room making magnatile structures and making an advance highway system with raised roads, and in the science room exploring the moon sand. There was also a lot of dancing to a variety of soft CD music. Friends paired off and communicated to one another who was supposed to twirl and who was supposed to hold. It was lovely, creative, and the children remained in control of their bodies the entire time.

047

For lunch we had brown rice with red beans, cantaloupe & watermelon, and green peas.

074

Take time to enjoy the sunshine today!

Wee wees or puppies?
Our wee wees have a new interest. Since they arrived this monday they have been playing dress up with the dog and cat suits. Several times a day they ask for help from the teachers to put their costumes on and go on with their brand new games. Assisted by a teacher they are exploring the world of pet animals and their babies. We are discovering what makes a pet happy, what are their needs, the things they like to do, their moves and their sounds. This morning when the older kids came out and noticed the wee wees’ puppy pretend play they joined in, pet them and fed them and asked them to do some tricks!!!
Our infants are having a lot of new developments these days. Some have joined the walkers and some are just about to do so. Practicing hard and observing their older friends intensely to learn. Blowing raspberries is another very popular trick these days as well as making funny sounds while singing and tapping on their mouths. The last ones are so much fun to do that even the oldest wee wees like to joins in!
What can we say, It is so nice to be back !!!!!
We are wishing a fast recovery to Miss Lisa who is out sick today.
Have a wonderful afternoon!

Paulina, Marty, Lisa and Amy.

WF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 7.12.11

002Yesterday, Miss Laurie led a discussion with the children about, “What is Family?”. We are exploring whether this topic has the potential to become our next study. We have a stack of library books (thanks Grandma Carol) to investigate on family and we’ll see where we go from here!

Simon and Oliver brought a really neat story from home (Perfect Square) to share with their friends. This quickly became a large group story time as the story enticed most of the children over. After the story, the children represented their own perfect squares in the art room by creating their own collages.

Have a great day!

WWF Daily Explorations, 7-11-11

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a wonderful, restful break. This morning we had story time, and then loaded up on sunscreen to go outside and use our new beachball sprinkler. What fun! A special thanks to Miss Paulina for blowing it up! We were only able to use it for a short time before the rain. Hopefully we can venture out this afternoon. Miss Lisa and Paulina did some dance and music with the children once the rain started. We did our new “Stop, Go” song, and sang to “We all sing with same voice” and used our shakers.

For lunch today we had chicken with whole wheat pasta, bananas and broccoli. If you have not already done so, please be bring in a swimsuit for your child to leave here at WWF. With the hot summer days, we do spend a lot of time with water exploration outside. Please be sure to send your child in play clothes, especially our non-walkers who give their knees a real workout!
Happy Birthday, Miss Paulina!

WF Daily Explorations, 7-11-11

Welcome Back!

It was an exciting morning with stories of vacations and the reuniting of friends. The brief thunder storm added a little extra excitement! However, Wee Frienders looked at the storm scientifically, with discussions about the wind/rain intensity and movement. We stood at the open door and felt the rain blow into the house and were amazed by its power! There was also a discussion comparing and contrasting the sound of thunder vs fireworks. Owen summed up this up with, “Fireworks have a big boom. Thunder doesn’t. It just has a big rumble.”

008

Other morning activities included:

*Playing in the moon sand. We have added moon sand tools and doll house people to spur the kids imaginations!

*Many friends easel painted. Many made popsicle stick sculptures.

026*Several friends played in hopscotch for an extended time navigating the dynamics of the dog/cat community they created.

For lunch we had whole wheat rotini with chicken, watermelon and broccoli.

WWF Daily Explorations, Tuesday 7.12.11

Oh, the warmth of the summer sun! A special thank you to those of you who brought in a swimsuit. For those of you who did not as of yet please do so. We had fun using our big paintbrushes in water buckets this morning. We painted everything possible. We also played in the beachball sprinkler and colored with chalk.

We harvested lettuce, green beans and snap peas from our garden. We had hummus on wholewheat bread with fresh cucumber, our snap peas, and cantaloupe for lunch. After lunch we dressed up in our costumes and used our imaginations. What fun.

Just a reminder that pick up time tends to be hectic and sensitive. Please feel free to discuss things with the teacher’s at drop off to find the best strategy for a calm and smooth good bye.

A special thank you to all of our volunteer gardners. We are sure enjoying it.

Make it a great day!

Regards, Lisa, Paulina, Marty and Amy
