This morning, Kai, Macy and Annie continued studying the pictures/scenes in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. As they read they identified “there’s Simon!” (the raven) or “there’s me!” (Kai, the prince). Annie found herself as Snow White and Macy recognized herself as Kai’s horse.

IMG 9663

Yesterday, many friends created beadwork. This interest continued this morning as friends gathered to create crowns, bracelets and necklaces.

After more conversation about the characteristics of the seven dwarves, Nate found a dwarves cap and Heigh-Ho’d around the classroom!

A few friends enjoyed an apple tree counting game. They rolled the dice and moved a poker chip from apple to apple ’til they made it to the apple in the center of the tree. They practiced counting dots on the dice and number recognition on the apples. They counted out loud as they moved around the board.

There were lots of structures being created in the truck room this morning. Owen built a castle out of Magna-Tiles. Simon and Alma worked collaboratively to make a wrecking ship. Stephen made a sledge hammer out of Trios.

Melinda led each Wee Friend through the multiple-direction process of making silly putty. Glue, water, food coloring, liquid starch, Borax and alot of elbow grease!!!

Our older friends assisted our younger friends. They measured, counted tablespoons, poured, scooped, stirred and squished, identified colors to dye their putty, pulled apart and asked lots of questions!

Melinda read The Apple Doll by Elisa Kleven. We demonstrated how to make an apple doll by peeling the skin, cutting out eyes and a mouth, sticking it onto a stick and dressing it. We extended this exercise into another science experiment by soaking the apple head (just like Susanna in the story) in a lemon bath to see if it will preserve the doll. We’ll take it out Monday and slowly dry it. Next week each Wee Friend will have a chance to make their own apple headed doll.

We also read The True Tale of Johnny Appleseed by Margaret Hodges. We continued our conversation about the man, noticing many interesting things about Johnny from the fabulous illustrations. We got to talking about apple seeds and learned that they are poisonous! We collected the seeds from the apples we served at lunch and studied them. We learned that if you accidently eat one or two seeds from one or two apples it’s not a big deal. If you eat a whole backpack full then you would get very sick. Annie lent us her backpack for a visual demonstration of how many seeds it would take to get really sick. We imagined that Johnny Appleseed probably had a sack that full of seeds. But he didn’t eat them! 🙂

For lunch we served pita pocket pizzas, broccoli and apples!

WWF Daily Explorations, Friday 9-30-11

Good Afternoon!

Despite the dreary weather, WWF had a great morning! We welcomed Jada (20 months old starting on Monday) for her second visit to get acclimated. We also braved the fall weather for some ‘bundled up” outside time.

After our outside play, the children started playing with buttons, which evolved into playdough with button play! This play involved most of the children for quite some time.

062

065

060

We also had a very long music time with books and dancing:

For breakfast the kids had cheerios, fruit and milk. For lunch we had whole wheat pizzas, broccoli and bananas. For snack we will have banana muffins and cheese.

Have fabulous weekend!

WWF, Out and about! 9-29-11

It was so wonderful to see the sun out this morning. We started our day with trains, planes, and automobiles! The children are really enjoying our new yellow track, and racing the cars down our indoor slide. Ozzie is becoming really good at, “ready, set, go!” Eleanor is counting to three!

Once it was announced we would be going outside, the children helped to gather their shoes and socks, and out we went. How nice it was to open the door, see the sun, and see our WWF take off to the top of the hill and sit on the cement by the garage door. This is WWF “protocol” as they wait patiently for the teacher’s to bring out bikes, our Blue Dogs, and shopping carts. Marta and Elizabeth continue to be our “brave one’s,” while Olivia and Sloane are a little more reserved!

Prior to lunch we did some books accompanied with a CD. The children danced to “We all sing with the same voice.”

Our breakfast this morning was Kix cereal and banana slices. For lunch today we had turkey and cheese tortillas, pear slices, and shredded carrots. Our afternoon snack was cheese and crackers.

This afternoon after nap, Elizabeth and Sloane were busy in the kitchen. Marta, Eleanor, Chloe and Ozzie enjoyed our new fall Pla-Doh.

We are sorry, but no photos today, as we did not locate our camera until recently!

Regards~

WF Daily Explorations, Thursday 9-29-11

Wee Friends had a busy morning filled with children engaged in everyday activities like:

Play dough. Miss Paulina combined Spanish words with the fine motor work of manipulating play dough and the creative work of creating with it.

417

382

419

Housekeeping. The fairy tales continued to play out this morning. There were many princesses and our prince Kai to help them in their times of need.

394

393

Music and dancing. The children moved to a variety of music this morning. Some of the dancing was very dramatic (and princess like!).

397

Story time. In small groups, the children sat with Melinda and Paulina to listen to stories being read aloud.

436

Building. The children have really been enjoying having the trios back in rotation. Today they were combined with the barn to make a thoughtful farm yard.

408

Doll house loft. The children took turns playing in the back room loft which is now set up with the doll house and a sheer fabric for some “privacy”.

426

Hopscotch. As children felt the need to release energy, they spent some time building, climbing, sliding and jumping with friends in a place where it is OK to be a little louder.

431

Outside time, then lunch: Served family style was whole wheat tortillas with co jack cheese, apple sauce and broccoli and carrots.

432

Journals. The older kids journal after lunch. Each child had a person interview with Paulina today about his/her drawing and was encouraged to dictate words or do their own kids spelling.

434

435

Enjoy your day!

WF Daily Explorations Wednesday 9/28

It was another morning filled with imaginative play surrounding the fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

IMG 9488 IMG 9516 IMG 9491

IMG 9521

Melinda asked the question, “What is the difference between a castle and a palace?” We researched the details (Simon nailed it without research!) and explored what each may look like. We also discussed who lives in a castle and who lives in a palace.

IMG 9525

Kai was particularly interested in the horses so he chose a drawing technique book and studied how to draw a horse. The message board castle drawing had two guards and a bird. Kai assigned Macy and Stephen as guards and Simon as the Black Raven and wrote their names above their picture.

IMG 9528

Our princesses carry their imaginative princess play to a fine motor experience: Polly Pocket like princess dolls. The girls work very diligently to put the rubbery/slippery dresses on the doll and then take them off again. It’s an amazing workout for those small finger muscles!

IMG 9496

After spending time dancing with Arleigh, Umi and Alma moved to hopscotch, built a springboard three blocks high and practiced jumping off! Umi explained that it was part of their house.

IMG 9493

Almost daily, Nate gravitates to the truck room to build something. Today he built a vertical Magna-Tile tower independently.

IMG 9532

On her accordian, Melinda taught a small group of friends where Middle C is located and what it sounds like. They sang “Heigh-Ho” and several other familiar tunes.

IMG 9542

All of our WF were invited into the reading are to review where housekeeping toys belong. Melinda demonstrated how to properly put away a few of the many small pieces that make up housekeeping.

IMG 9568

We have a new parachute! Each friend held onto a handle and we shook it slow/medium/fast; we crawled underneath it; we walked across it; we traveled in a circle with it; we bounced a ball on it….Melinda brought it just in time as we will find ourselves inside more and more as the season turns.

IMG 9489 IMG 9499 IMG 9506

IMG 9523 IMG 9529 IMG 9550

IMG 9563For lunch we had long grain rice with beef, bananas/pears and roasted butternut squash.

Have a great day!

WWF, Rolling up some great fun! 9-28-11

The weather was disappointing, as we were looking so forward to our farm trip today. Sloane had her ladybug boots ready to go, but will put them up until we attend again, which is tentatively scheduled for October 13. Tami will keep everyone informed via email.

004

020

This morning it was fun to race our cars down our slide, and on our yellow race tracks. Ozzie and Eleanor really enjoyed this.

026

029

013

Sloane and Marta cheered them on. Pla-Doh fun was available in the kitchen. We now have a fresh batch of red, and a delicious cinnamon smelling one. The children rolled some red Pla-Doh into balls, and we topped them with a black pipe cleaner and a leaf to make apples. The children also used small rolling pins to roll some out. Marta, Sloane, and Ozzie also enjoyed making some beautiful drawings with markers. Eleanor and Marta played in shaving cream mixed with purple paint. Yesterday afternoon, it was a pleasure to see Marta and Elizabeth journaling. Marta seemed to be really be missing Finn, as she would draw something, then begin to talk about Finn. Though young, this is a great way to get their thought process going.

008

Some of the children enjoyed our new ball pit, for others, it was a great morning to snuggle and read books either by themselves or with a teacher.

The competition is on….PeeKay, or Clara, who will crawl first? Both babies are thriving in their physical development. PeeKay kept us very entertained yesterday, as Miss Paulina was acting like she was sneezing. The little guy was laughing, it was contagious!

Marta and Elizabeth seem to really be utilizing our new kitchen dishes and having really been using imaginary parallel play. It is so nice to see their budding friendship. Sloane and Olivia enjoy their afternoon time on the jungle gym, and they too, have developed a special bond.

It has been an extraordinary, great week at WWF! Make it a great day!

WWF, “Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice, that is what Wee Wee Friends is made of!” 9-27-11

Despite the rain, we made it a great morning inside of WWF. We started our morning withthe donut shop game. It was great to see the children recite the motions to the song and learn colors. We then read, “The Apple Pie Tree.” This was a great way to get the children engaged in fall. It was then time for some guitar music. We also brought out our tub of fall leaves. We sang some songs about falling leaves, and practiced dangling them from up above to the floor. We also did a “fall rendition of “Ring Around the Rosie.” The children really enjoyed it.

001

002

015

005

The children have really taken to our new apple pie set. They were busy setting the table and serving the pie, serving coffee and tea to their friends and teachers. Sloane and Elizabeth gathered up their baby dolls to accompany them. It was then on to our kitchen to make some homemade apple sauce. Marta really enjoyed using our apple peeler, and really developed her fine motor skills. We all counted the apples on the table, and Sloane and Oliva helped themselves and bit into apples all of their own. The children added cinnamon before we placed it on the stove. The whole WWF house smelled of apples and cinnamon, perfect for this fall day!

Several of the children enjoyed working on their gross motor skills while climbing and jumping in our new ball pit. In all, it was a great morning!

027

For lunch today we dined on tuna salad, whole wheat bagels, peas, and of course, our homemade apple sauce.

Prior to naptime, we had story time. We read a book titled, “Apples.” We also read “Ten Little Ducks.”

In regard to the farm trip tomorrow, Tami has said that if the weather is rainy around 8:00 or so, we will not be going. If weather conditions are uncertain, Tami will send out an email.

Enjoy the afternoon!

WF Daily Explorations Tuesday 9/27

IMG 9423

Late yesterday afternoon we read Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. We had a lengthy conversation about “What makes a story a Fairy Tale?” We discussed the meanings of the Dwarves’ names. The conversation naturally turned to comparing differences and similarities of Snow White to our previous study of Sleeping Beauty. After hearing the story, a small group jumped up and immediately acted out the scene where the Wicked Queen, as an old woman in disguise, invites SW to eat the apple.

IMG 9436 IMG 9438 IMG 9440

IMG 9444IMG 9461 IMG 9425

We continued the conversation/acting out this morning, with each friend fully owning the character they chose. Here’s our cast so far:

Snow White – Jane, Annie, Ada, Arleigh, Alexandra, Addi

Prince – Kai

Bad Guy – Stephen

Wicked Queen – Macy

Puppies – Nate, Umi, Alma

Black Raven – Simon

We set out Tami’s apple red Play-Doh and sang “Roll roll roll the dough, in between your hands…roll, roll, roll the dough in between your hands!”. Ada turned her ball into an apple while Alexandra’s ball became a basket. Nate’s roll was a carrot and a hot dog.

IMG 9474 IMG 9476 IMG 9467

IMG 9453

For a counting and sorting activity, we made a felt apple tree and stuck red, green and yellow apple stickers to it. Friends took turns dropping green apples into a green felt basket, as well as the red and yellow ones into corresponding colored baskets.

We continued singing The Johnny Appleseed Song, learned about who Johnny Appleseed was and had an apple hunt in the classroom. We learned the meaning of “orchard” and talked about visiting one.

As we move into cold/flu season, we will keep you posted on any illnesses that make their way through our classroom. With severe illnesses (strep, chicken pox, lice etc.) Tami will send out an email as well as post it on our Parent Information bulletin board. Over these past few weeks, there was a flu-like bug that affected three Wee Friends and three teachers, in varying degrees. It involved fever, vomiting and diarrhea. For the past week, there have been no signs of this particular virus persisting. During this season, it is usual that colds will come and go on an ongoing basis. Again, we will make sure you are aware of anything passing through multiple families so that you can watch for symptoms in your own child.

IMG 9464 IMG 9466 IMG 9484

IMG 9479

Addi has been spending alot of time playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and belting out the lyrics as she plays!

Hope your day is happy!!!!!!!!!

WF Daily Explorations Monday 9/26

This morning, Jennifer and the gymnastics bus were here! Our older friends go from 9-9:30 and our younger WF go from 9:30-10:00. I will post a reminder on Friday for the following Monday’s schedule so everyone who has enrolled has a chance to participate.

IMG 9370

This weekend Tami was hard at work making apple pie Play Doh! When Wee Friends were not on the bus, they spent, literally, the whole morning exploring and creating with the Play Doh. They made everything from huevos grandes y poquenos, apple pies, cherry pies, chocolate cake and Jane made a Sweet Shop. Kai practiced a math concept with a discussion on 1/2’s, 1/3’s and 1/4’s, cutting the Play-Doh accordingly.

IMG 9375 IMG 9383

On her guitar, Paulina picked out the secular version of “The Johnny Appleseed Song” and we sang along. We invited Wee Friends to practice their courtly bows as Paulina played a musical montage starting with “Lavender Blue” , “Skip to My Lou” (changing the words to “bow to your partner”) and ending with “Shoo Fly Don’t Bother Me!” The Wee Friends princesses, relaxed into a music meditation as Paulina played a tune on her recorder.

IMG 9391

Later, some friends chose to make crowns out of pipe cleaners!

IMG 9388 IMG 9386

IMG 9396

Outside a group of friends were wondering why the leaves were on the ground and why they weren’t green anymore. A discussion was had about the changing season and what happens to trees and leaves during this time.

IMG 9415Addi exclaimed “It’s a nice day out today, Mina!”

IMG 9404

For lunch we served whole wheat pasta and marinara, pineapple and fresh WF tomatoes.

ENJOY YOUR DAY!

WWF Daily Explorations, Monday “Pie Time!” 9-26-11

022

This morning made us smile! We had happy children and happy teachers, despite the dreary weather start.

This morning we started with “We all Go Travelling By”, our favorite book with CD. Other favorite morning fun:

For some fall fun, we have a new play apple pie set. We have some red playdough planned for some applicious afternoon fun!

029

007

Ozzie spent a great deal of time exploring how the cars move down the slide.

002

The new ball pit was a great hit too! Climbing through the balls, moving the balls to the upside big blocks, rolling the blocks on the balance beam and rolling the balls up and down the slide were all poplular with all the kids.

008

010

018

027

Looking through the wooden blocks was also fun for Eleanor today.

020

And there was also some sudsy water play:

023

*Olivia and Ozzie spent some time painting with chunky paint (tempera with rice).

*Outside time in…sunshiny, cool, wonderful fall weather.
