WWF Daily Explorations

Good Afternoon!

WWF had a busy start for this week. This morning some friends continued exploring new ideas for drawing tracks on paper and running their cars through them. Other children played with the little people (plastic miniature dolls) giving them a bath on soapy water and drying them up with towels.

Some children joined the donut shop game with Ms. Lisa and read some books, and did some puzzles.

One by one the children joined Marty peeling and slicing apples. Lisa put them in a big pot with cinnamon and water to make delicious apple sauce for our lunch. Needless to say, our mid-morning snack was apples!

Some of the children enjoyed racing their cars and trains down our track. Our outside time this morning was a little shorter due to the heavy winds.

Our lunch today was tuna noodle casserole with peas, mixed vegetables, and of course, apple sauce!

Welcome back to back Clara who was visiting her Grandma last week! We missed her!

Enjoy the day!

Friday’s apple pie was finger lickin’ good! Wee Friends gobbled their project/creation down with apple cider.

Miss Jennifer arrived at 9am for gymnastics. Today they worked on the Climbing Ladder and Incline Mat. They used a rope ladder to climb to the top of the bus (inside!) and touched the ceiling. They learned glide and tuck swings, and rolled forward and backwards on the incline mat.

In housekeeping, we added witches hats, pumpkin pails, rubber snakes and other halloweenie materials.

IMG 0612

After gymnastics Kai, Ada, Arleigh and Macy played a milk bottle math game. Using rubber bracelets and plastic spiders, they tried to toss them onto the neck of the bottle. They counted to 7 (7 milk bottles) as they tossed and then sorted the materials, by color, placing them onto/into the bottles.

IMG 0615 IMG 0626 IMG 0630

We conducted an apple taste test using Granny Smith, Red and Golden Delicious and Honeycrisp apples.

We began by reading “Apples, Apples, Apples” by Nancy Wallace in which the main character is named Minna!

IMG 0638 IMG 0636

Our Minna showed Wee Friend’s each different variety. They discussed the color of each apple. She offered a small taste of each talking about sour and sweet.

IMG 0644 IMG 0646 MG 0655

When everyone had a bite of each apple, Tami gave each child a sticker with his/her name on it. They stuck it on a message board, under their favorite apple.

MG 0661

Alexandra and other friends played a matching pumpkin bingo and Alma and Umi worked on writing their names.

Mixers…Shakers…Pie Crust Makers!!!!!!

We spent the morning making apple pie!

In various small groups, Wee Friends completed all the steps it takes to make apple pie. Jane, Kai, Ada, Annie and Macy measured and mixed the sugar and spice!

IMG 0555 IMG 0559 IMG 0560

Alma and Umi prepared the crust by rolling it out, patting it, crimping the edges with a fork and painting egg white all over.

IMG 0564

IMG 0567

Everybody had a chance to core/peel the apples.

IMG 0570 IMG 0582 IMG 0572

IMG 0574 IMG 0576 IMG 0580

We combined the cut apples with the dry sugar mixture and scooped it into two pie shells.

IMG 0583 IMG 0585

Annie and Ada added created a lattice dough design on top, painted on more egg white and turned it over to Kai and Jane who sprinkled a bit of sugar all over.

IMG 0589

It’s cooling on the stove and ready for snack!

Tami added Fairy Tale templates to our Shadow Puppet Theatre!

IMG 0501

IMG 0528

Melinda taught everybody “The Chicken”!

IMG 0531

The gymnastics bus will be here Monday at 9am ready for the first group and 9:30 for the second!

For lunch we served PB/honey on whole wheat bread, peas and craisins.

Have a great weekend!

WF Daily Explorations Thursday 10/13

Today was filled with a variety of small group activities. IMG 0424

Our apples were finally dry enough to finish our apple dolls. Using google eyes, pipe cleaners, yarn and felt two small groups took turns adding hair, arms, legs, eyes and clothes!

IMG 0439 IMG 0456 IMG 0457

In housekeeping, another small group acted out selected scenes from Beauty and the Beast. We first looked at the book and a few friends turned to the pages that illustrated the scenes they were interested in exploring.

IMG 0432

Addi was one of several chickens who were fed by Belle. We used this moment to stretch and exercise our gross motor muscles.

IMG 0447 IMG 0453

At first princesses Alma and Umi told the Beast to “go away!”. They soon relented and invited the Beast to be their friend. Today, the improv was guided with provoking questions such as “The Beast isn’t leaving the castle, what should we do?” or “I see the Beast is smiling, what does that say to you?”

IMG 0483

The imaginative play morphed into Snow White (per Annie’s request!) in which Annie made an appearance as the princess who eats the apple and falls instantly. Annie has mastered this dramatic, graceful, tragic (yet totally safe!) fall. Kai snuck into the Beast costume and we were suddenly back in the castle where a tired and “kind on the inside” Beast was comforted by his friends!

We created a replica of the rose in the vase whose petals slowly fall. We counted the petals and will watch them fall one by one, counting as we go.

IMG 0427

Melinda is playing several WF songs on her accordian and friends are singing along! Today she explored 4/4 time, counting to four and then teaching the singers to “sing now!”. They clapped this rhythm out and then used instruments to practice keeping the beat.

Be on the lookout for information for our WF Winter Concert!

Special Note: You may find some time black seeds on the floor in our science center. Rest assured that we do not have any little visitors, these seeds are from inside the bean pods in our sensory bin!

Also, we do have a cold being passed around the classroom. Symptoms include a runny nose, heavy coughing and chest congestion, plugged up ears, and post nasal drip. No fever reported so far.

For lunch we served cream cheese/carrots on whole wheat tortillas, roasted potatoes and applesauce.

Hope you are having moments of rest in your day.

WWF Rolling in the Doh!

Our day began with our Donut Shop Game, and a story.

Elizabeth wanted our fire truck CD, so we did some songs and dancing to it. “BINGO” was a big hit as well!

013

020

Miss Paulina brought out the Pla-Doh. The children rolled and patted it, adorned it with sea shells, made cookie letter prints, and used our various size and textured hammers. A long snake was even made out of our Pla-Doh. The children observed it going from very long to short.

023

028

Though slightly wet out, there was still some time to play with our balls on our bridge. We are trying to savor the last few days of our “fall like” weather.

The children spent some time this morning trying out our new hammock swing! Marta, Elizabeth, Sloane and Olivia put their baby dolls in as well. What fun!

039

032

It was a great morning to sit back and do some puzzles. Elizabeth enjoyed the shapes, numbers and transportation puzzles. Olivia enjoyed working with Chloe on another. Sloane worked diligently on her number puzzle, and Marta and Jada later joined in. Others did some painting.

048

056

How high and tall can you go? Some of our friends worked on soaring to new heights with our building blocks.

For breakfast this morning, we had toast and bananas. Our lunch consisted of beef and noodles, some delicious oven potatoes and fresh fruit salad.

Enjoy the day!

WF Farm, 10/12/11

Today at the farm, our focus was to continue to get the younger children more comfortable with the animals, smells, noises, and slippery spots on the ground (sometimes it’s just mud, but sometimes it’s pooh!).  So we spent our morning seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, and tasting things.

Shortly after we arrived, I caught a chicken.  Most of our younger group is still rather intimidated by the chickens, so this was an opportunity to touch, smell, and hear the chickens up close.  (No, we didn’t taste them:)  As we touched the chickens, we compared how different the combs and waddle felt to the softness their feathers.

We also fed the goats.  Touching the grain is sensory experience that all of the children enjoy.  They run the grain through their fingers, sometimes gently and sometimes squeezing it tightly to change how it feels.

We compared  how the goats tongue felt to the cows tongue as they ate grain from our hands.  (The goat’s tongue is very soft, while the cow’s tongue is hard and also rough textured like a cat.)

Sunscreen, the fabulous farm kitten, blessed us with some sweet loving moments.  The children listened to her purr and felt the softness of her furr and the prickle of her whiskers.  Thankfully, nobody felt the sharpness of her claws!

Next, Charlotte brought out a variety of fresh farm fruits for us to sample: grapes, persimmons, and paw paws.

Several friends enjoyed the sensory experience of walking, stomping, and yes, even jumping in the mud.  Their boots stuck to the mud and it squished and it squelched as they squealed.

The geese were in rare form today and at different points they were being very loud.  The children watched them closely and listened to them call angrily to each other.  (Well, at least it sounded angry. They may have just been making lunch plans.)

While in the woods, we listened to the leaves crunch as we walked.  The children also gathered nuts from the ground.  They noticed that the opened shells of the walnuts had a strong smell.

In the prairie, we listened to the wind and played with the ripe, fuzzy milkweed seeds.  We threw the fuzzy seeds the air and watched them blow away.  It was another great day to be at the farm!

Back at WF, Melinda had a delightful, peaceful morning with the standby group.  They spent a relaxed morning reading books, painting at the easel, playing games with the parachute, and helping Melinda with lunch and cots.

WWF Farm RESCHEDULED…again!

The forecast does not look promising for tomorrow to be our rain date for the WWF farm trip.  Additionally, with the likely chance that it will be raining, cancelling now allows Charlotte to be committed somewhere else she needs to be.

Soooo….here’s the plan:  The older WWF over 2 years old children (Marta, Elizabeth and Eleanor) will join my regularly scheduled WF trip in one week: Wednesday, October 19th.  If any parents would like to join us with their under 2 child, please just let me know!  And if it rains again, we’ll plan on the following Wednesday! We will persevere!

Thanks!

Tami

WWF, Up, Up and Away We Go! 10-12-11

Our morning began with some marker and paint mural drawings. The children worked diligently on their own masterpieces, some discussing their drawings as they went along.

002

006

Fall scented homemade Pla-Doh of cinnamon filled the kitchen table. The children enjoyed doing “Pat-A-Cake, Pat-A-Cake a Bakers Man” with it. We also brought out our big buttons to add to their creations. We worked with some of the children on counting and matching in the midst of their creations. Ozzie enjoyed matching his buttons on the table. Olivia and Sloane enjoyed the texture of theirs, and flattening it out on the table. Eleanor Jada and Marta worked on theirs individually, taking much pride in their creations. We also listened to several of our fall book selections.

008

Our outside time this morning was spent with our new parachute. What fun this was! This taught the children the concept of high and low, slower and faster, and mastering to keep the ball we placed in the center on the parachute! We had some disappointed faces when we were done, so it will most likely be part of our afternoon activities!

022

014

033

For breakfast this morning, we had scrambled eggs with cheese and bananas. Our mid-morning, post parachute snack was fresh sliced cucumbers. Rice with chicken, more cucumbers, and oranges filled the children’s bellies this afternoon. As you can see below, it was a big hit!

040

041

Please be on stand-by for a farm update for our farm trip from Tami either tonight, or tomorrow. Once again, the weather forecast is not in our favor.

030

Enjoy the scenery of this beautiful day!

IMG 0222

Before the swimmers left, Melinda took an opportunity to remind Wee Friends where the toys in housekeeping go. Putting toys back in their designated spot is a skill we work on everyday.

IMG 0228

Yesterday we began a conversation about shells. We specifically discussed snails, turtles, eggs and nuts. We talked about a shell’s purpose for the living creature inside. We explored an egg, walnut and seashell and then recreated these objects with felt.

When the swimmers departed, all corners of the classroom were in full gear!

IMG 0242

Ada and Stephen have been enjoying spending alot of time together these last several days.
