Our Wee Wee Friends started off their Friday by working with the waffle blocks. Children lined them up and stacked them together. When kids were done with the waffle blocks, they were very responsible and picked up their blocks and put them back into the basket.

Lately, our friends have shown an interest in their bodies. So, our friends made a cutout of their own body! They loved being traced and getting to color it after they were done. Children thought it was interesting to watch their friends get traced.

Music time came next where we worked in some gross motor activities along with the music. Our friends ran, walked, and bounced around the room to different songs. We used musical shakers to make music along with drums. While having music time, it started to rain and thunder outside. We opened up the windows and tried to be really quiet so that we could hear the sounds that were coming from outside. A few of our friends looked out the window to see what was happening.

For breakfast, our friends had eggs and bananas. AM snack was mixed vegetables. Lunch consisted of a whole wheat tortilla with pork and melted shredded cheese, pears, and green peas. PM snack was apples and yogurt.

WF Daily Explorations Friday 3/30

A couple weeks ago Tami introduced geodes into our environment. This morning, as friends were arriving, we placed a basket of them on the circular table and, using a felt foundation, explored the beautiful crystallized rocks.

Wee Friends counted the geodes, stacked them and used pipe cleaners to string them.

Macy expressed that her geode, when on the pipe cleaner, looked like a clock, tick-tock. We discovered the word pendulum. Several friends went on to make jewelry with their geodes. We explored the spatial concepts above and on the table when discussing where the fragile geodes needed to be placed to avoid breaking.

A large group of friends helped the teachers fold laundry!

Fly me to the moon and let me live among the stars….ladadadadadadada…..Using cardboard paper and markers, Wee Friends designed airplane wings and attached them to their arms with pipe cleaners. Simon managed to turn the pages of a book with his wings attached!

Macy and Annie took on the great task of switching out our marker blocks with new markers. Their muscles got a workout as they pulled out old markers, pulled caps off and stuck new markers in!

Wee Friends have learned about poetry this week and have studied words that rhyme. We chose a Shel Silverstein poem to memorize and it goes like this:

When the light turns green you go!

When the light turns red you stop!

But what do you do when the light turns blue, with orange and lavender spots?!

Today’s Wee Sprouts are carrots and turnips. For breakfast we served Cheerios and bananas. Lunch was Lisa’s delicious chicken salad, peas and applesauce. Our snack today will be the rare WF treat: popcorn!!

Good Afternoon!

Our friends played with big bouncy balls to start off their morning! Children were bouncing on the ball as well as working on their balance by rolling on the ball while trying not to fall off. Kids found a couple ways of doing this: rolling on their backs and on their bellies!

Our friends took turns in the kitchen where they worked with coffee liners and a water based paint. They used droppers to carefully paint their liner. A few of the children mixed the colors and saw the colors run together when the paint hit the liner. Children also partook in some play-dough action where they rolled the play-dough flat on the table.

We headed outside where children went off and started different activities. A few of our friends worked in the sandbox while others played with the pebbles around the wooden house.

For breakfast, our friends had cheerios with apples. AM snack was green peas. Lunch consisted of whole grain rice with beans, mixed fruit salad, and mixed vegetables. PM snack was rice cakes with cream cheese and bananas.

WF Blog – Thursday 3/29 AIRPORT NEWS!!!!

Lisa stopped by the airport this morning to drop off our thank you note. She met Mike Daigle, A.A.E., Executive Director of St. Jo County Airport Authority and he expressed that he was told Wee Friends were the most well behaved and delightful group of students who had toured the airport in recent days. Sharon, a airport spokesperson, called Lisa this morning to ask if they could put our thank you note on display in the airport.

WF Daily Explorations Thursday 3/29

The day started in a whirl! After all of our friends were dropped off and breakfast was eaten, a couple different work projects began, lasting the whole morning. Melinda worked with a group of friends on learning a new game: Richard Scarry’s Busy, Busy Airport. As the name suggests, (and in the spirit of Richard Scarry’s books) it is a busy game and engages players with multi tasks and directions. Friends loaded cargo, flew to a choice of four destinations and endured cancelled flights, to name a few things! (Literacy K.4.7)

While Elliott was playing with planes, he expressed to Tami that he needed a runway. With painters tape, she laid out runways of different sizes. Later, Lisa introduced a measuring tape to a small group of friends and they measured the runways. They used clipboards to record their findings. They continued measuring trees, benches, sidewalks and lots of outdoor materials when they went outside. (Math K.5.1)

Inspired by Teacher Tom ([email protected]) we invited Wee Friends to the art table and explored clouds and rain with jars of water, shaving cream and droppers filled with watercolors.

First, friends measured half of a jar and we discussed how two halves make a whole. Next, they filled their jar halfway full of water. We filled the top half of the jar with shaving cream. We asked the question: “What color is rain?” Friends chose a variety of water colors to work with. They filled the dropper up with watercolor and squirted the top of the shaving cream to determine of the paint would seep through the clouds, creating rain. (Math K.5.1)

After this portion of the exploration was complete, many friends poured their rain jars into a larger sensory bin for more ooey gooey play.

This week’s FABS are: Literacy: K.4.7-Identify pictures and charts as sources of information and begin gathering information from a variety of sources (books, technology). Math: K.5.1-Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight and temperature of objects and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler or holds more. K.5.2-Understand concepts of time: morning, afternoon, evening, today, yesterday, tomorrow, week, month, and year. Understand that clocks and calendars are tools that measure time.

We enjoyed spending our morning with two more visitors from Family Connection as they continued to exercise their new assessment tool.

Our Wee Sprouts today are broccoli crowns and carrots. Breakfast was whole wheat cinnamon toast and pear slices. For lunch, Tami prepared whole grain rice with shredded beef, mixed veggies and fruit salad.

Good Afternoon!

Our friends began their morning by doing a sensory activity in the kitchen. Children worked with ABC rice and pasta. Some kids chose to work on pouring while a few chose to work on their clean-up skills! Children shared the dust pan and broom and picked up after their friends.

We travelled to the backyard where children played on the slide and rode bikes on the pavement. Our friends were having great conversations with their classmates while outside as well! A few friends talked about the sand and pretending it was food. Then they took this ‘food’ to their others friends that were playing outside.

When most of our friends were fast asleep, Clara and Aiden kept each other company! Aiden sure did appreciate Clara sharing her toys with him :).

For breakfast, we served eggs with pears. Lunch consisted of pork with beans, green peas, and bananas. PM snack was carrots and a special Easter treat Breania made for the children. Our late afternoon snack was carrots.

WF Daily Explorations and Farm, 3.28.2012

Wow! It is such a beautiful day to be outside! The younger children enjoyed a trip to the farm.  Today our focus was on helping the younger group become acclimated to the animals, sounds and smells of the farm.  Additionally, there are more responsibilities to listen and respond to adults and peers in this environment. 

Before we exited the Weehicle, we had a short discussion about our expectations so that everyone could stay safe and have an great time at the farm.  We talked about 3 rules to follow: 1. We stay with a teacher and our group 2. We ask a teacher before touching equipment and animals. 3. We leave the dogs (if out) alone to do their farm jobs.  Our time was spent reinforcing these concepts to build skills for future farm trips.

After getting everyone set up with boots and proper sweatshirts, we took a few minutes to enjoy the small apple and pear trees.  Then we walked around and allowed the younger kids to get used to having chickens, geese, duck and turkeys near to them.  When you are 3 years old, these are big, noisy creatures!

We laughed as Elliott spent most of his trip in the above position; with his finger pointing at something he found exciting!  One of the older farm boys caught a chicken for our friends to pet.

We were able, even with our younger group, to help in some ways.  We:

Fed the chickens our WF scraps.  They were very happy! (TIMG_1416his was a great chance to reinforce listening.  The chickens are gathered very close to us eating, but a farm rule is that we respectfully allow the chickens to eat without bothering them.  This was soooo tempting, but the children did learn to cooperate.)

We helped clean out and replenish with hay the nest boxes for the 2 chicken houses.  The kids also worked together to move the large box into the chicken area.  Additionally, they fed the chickens  by mixing the 2 grains together, putting it in the bowls and putting it in the cages.

The kids were mesmerized by watching the horsed eat their morning hay.

After this, we took a nice long walk to explore the woods and prairie.  We stopped to look at bugs, listen to sounds, smell the air and pick flowers.

We only had one child fall asleep on the way back to WF and we had no upsets from overstimulated or overtired kids.  All in all, a success!

Back at WF, here are some highlights: The felt board was used as an airport runway, the airplane library books were extremely popular in small group and individually, several children worked on a “thank you” to the South Bend Regional Airport,  several children worked together on math activities and crazy eight card game, and Annie initiated a letter path game and other friends joined in on this._MG_0177

We had two observers in to work through an assessment tool that they will be using in the future with other programs.  (It was  not about WF, but rather, how well does the assessment tool work in a real environment.)  We will have two more observers tomorrow.  WF likes to help out the Early Childhood Community when we canSmile

For lunch we had scrambled spinach, ham and eggs , frozen blueberries, corn, and 1/2 of a strawberry cupcake (baked by Marty’s daughter Breania).

We started off our morning with gross motor work. Our friends climbed on the jungle gym and practice going down the slide on their bottoms.

Music time started shortly after. Our friends used their imaginations by pretending they were going to sleep. They used scarves as their blankets and covered up their friends for bedtime. Ozzie put on a dramatic rendition of ABC’s. When he was finished, all of his friends clapped! We sang the lady bug song. The lady bug started at the toes and went up to the head! Everyone had a great time watching and wondering where the lady bug was headed next.

Once outside, our friends decided to ride bicycles and push their grocery carts around on the pavement. Our gross motor skills are improving! Children are running and pushing their grocery carts while using their strengthening leg muscles.

We enjoyed our morning snack outside. We served an assortment of vegetables including cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. Friends sat together and enjoyed their healthy snack while watching planes fly by up in the sky!

While the swimmers were away, the remaining Wees enjoyed having their heads (and airplanes!) in the clouds!

With cotton balls, glue and a cardboard base, WFs began creating a cloudy sky through which their airplanes could fly.

Once there was sufficient cloud coverage, WFs used felt runways to ascend through the air.

When they had finished this part of their exploration, we moved the materials to the sensory bin. Elliott requested an air traffic control tower and the work continued.

Parent/Teacher Partnership Info:

On another note, this Saturday the WF staff attended an outstanding conference with Michael Brandwein (www.michaelbrandwein.com) as the keynote. His focus was “Life Skills: Getting Kids Ready for Life”. We were all inspired, affirmed and excited about a formula that he presented to use when communicating with our Wee Friends. When working with our friends, we first DESCRIBE what they are doing. Secondly, we LABEL it in a positive way. Lastly, we ENCOURAGE the positive behavior. An example is: Sally is playing dominoes with her friends. She sees that another friend would like more dominoes. Sally chooses to share her dominoes with her friend.

Teacher: “Sally, I see that you have shared your dominoes with Mary. You are choosing to be very cooperative. When you are cooperative, we can all play together peacefully. Sally, thank you for being cooperative.”

Our Wee Sprouts today are broccoli crowns. Breakfast was Cheerios and clementines. For lunch, we are serving melted cheddar on whole wheat tortillas, fresh beets/peas and fresh fruit salad (strawberries, raisins and clementines.

Good Afternoon!

We started our Monday off by gathering in the kitchen to do many activities. First, our friends used markers to color on paper. Then, they took the paper to the light table to see what it would look like if we turned the light on! Children loved to look at their creation when light was shining through it. A few friends worked with their numbers using teddy bears made out of construction paper. They counted them and looked at the different numbers of each bear. 001

Kids worked on their fine motor skills by cutting the paper with scissors. In the beginning, friends thought this was a hard task but by the end of the activity, children were beginning to get the hang of it!

In the living room, our friends got food out and offered a buffet of food on the table! Friends came prepared and loaded their plate up with food.

It’s starting to feel like March! We had to buddle up with coats and hats and we traveled outside. It was nice not to have to worry about coats for a while! :). Our friends rode their bikes and played in the sandbox while outside.

For breakfast, our friends had cheerios with apples. AM snack was fresh peppers. Lunch consisted of turkey sandwiches on whole wheat bread, strawberries and bananas, and green peas and broccoli. PM snack was raisins and cheese.
