This morning started off with a splash: water play! Friends were invited to the art table to explore with bins of warm water and magna-tiles. The open ended nature of these materials allow children to naturally discover many properties of water.
Some friends focused on pouring water over the flat surface of the magna-tiles, while others concentrated on building. Many towers, boats and even a fish tank were built!
We often ask our kindergarteners to complete more challenging tasks on a daily basis that are not planned ahead of time, but created based on whatever is currently happening in the classroom. Today’s water play was Elliott’s request. During set-up he was tasked with dividing the magna-tiles equally among the 6 bins! Elliott realized that there was not enough of every shape to divide it equally and left the extras back in the bin. Real world problem solving!
Today friends also gathered to play a modified version of the card game war. We changed the game slightly so that it wasn’t a competition to see who could get the most cards. The lack of a “winner” encouraged friendly play and allowed us to focus on figuring out the value of each card and which one was the greatest!
We also did a lot of building today. Featured here—a house and a “mice house”:
We were also excited to get some outside time!
Wee Sprouts: Carrots. Breakfast: Kix and bananas. Lunch: Whole grain brown rice with quinoa and cheddar cheese, peas and fresh oranges. Snack: Peanuts and blue corn chips.
