Good Afternoon!

**We have several ‘beginning of winter’ illnesses going around. The general colds and coughs along with a few low grade temperatures. We did send home a child today with a fever. Just as a reminder, here is the link to our illness policy: https://www.weefriendskids.com/handbook-policies/

Lulu interacted with the abacus this morning as she found several ways to make ten. Using the blue counters, she put one counter on one side and then nine counters on the opposite side. She used her one to one correspondence skills to count how many counters she had in all.

K.CA.1-2: Solve real-world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=3+2 and 5=4+1)

When our pre-k/k children journal after group time, it’s the perfect time to use authentic assessment while children are kid spelling. Consonants are easier to hear (generally) and vowels usually come a little later. After children are done journaling, they have time to write about what they drew. Usually, children hear a vowel sound but aren’t quite sure what sound or letter they’re hearing. Children build an understanding of what vowels are and the different sounds that they can make.

K.RF.4.3: Recognize the long and short sounds for the five major vowels.

Children gathered in the reading area to read a few new stories this morning. The ‘Ladybug Girl’ series is becoming one of our favorites so a few new ‘Ladybug Girl’ books were added to our ever growing book collection.

This morning we played with some sensory bags that Miss Marty made. We had 4 different bags to explore. We had a bag with shaving cream, a bag with cotton balls and little purple pom poms, a bag with glitter and water and a bag with green liquid watercolor and short pieces of plastic straws.

Good Afternoon!

Maddie became the teacher this morning as she explained to Franklin how she was choosing what consonant letter completed the word. Maddie worked with various word families this morning, completing the word by adding the beginning consonant to each word.

K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.

Several of our friends are going through a cognitive burst where they are learning and expressing newly acquired skills or information. Our interest in numbers and letters has taken off which is shown daily at the art table. The art table is just not about coloring; it’s about expressing our coloring using text. Children kid spell by themselves or ask for assistance from a teacher or a peer.

A kindergarteners journal reads ‘hous with ranbo flor’ or ‘house with rainbow floor’.

DSCN1195DSCN1216DSCN1220

Lulu, Lucy, and Anna used their imaginations in the habitrail this morning as they created a ‘freedom stage’. They put on a play for their peers and explained that anybody can be anything they wanted; a lovely idea right?!

Happy Wednesday!

This morning our sensory activity was shaving cream. The shaving cream we used was a blue gel that turned white as we ran our hands through it. We added some people and cars so we could drive through our shaving cream to make tracks.

DSCN1120DSCN1125DSCN1129DSCN1131

We enjoyed being under a blanket that was covering the table and sitting under the habitrail like we were in a tent or secret hide out.

DSCN1110DSCN1115DSCN1114

We also were busy driving our foam car and airplane around on the carpet.

Good Afternoon!

What you see in the pictures: children clipping a number on a card.

What is REALLY happening?

We used our knowledge of numbers to clip the missing number (1-20) on the card. Children had to think of what number came before or after a given number. Lulu was the first child to participate in the activity which prompted her younger peers to come and watch. As Lulu was clipping the correct number, we talked about the number sequence that she was completing.

Lucy and Franklin followed closely. Lucy focused on numbers under ten while Franklin concentrated on smaller numbers and the fine motor aspect of using the clothespin.

One of the best aspects of a multi-age classroom is the opportunity for our older children to engage in teachable moments with their younger peers.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

DSCN1097DSCN1103DSCN1106

The art table was full of children who used various drawing templates to draw things ranging from a peacock to a castle to a gryphon. Maddie wasn’t too sure what a ‘gryphon’ was so we looked it up using the internet. We found out that a gryphon is a fabled monster, usually having the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion!

Good Afternoon!

A few holiday closure reminders. We will be closed Thursday and Friday November 23-24 for our Thanksgiving break. Our Christmas break we will be closed Monday December 25-Friday, January 5, 2018. Thank you.

We began our morning with our pegs and peg boards. We worked on our fine motor skills as we placed the pegs into the holes of our boards or as we stacked the pegs together by themselves.

DSCN1006DSCN1008

We worked on our throwing and catching skills as we tossed the ball back and forth with Miss Rebekah.

We created beautiful drawings with our new set of markers.

Good Afternoon!

Our pre-k/k group (large group) took a trip to the library this morning where we returned our books from last week before checking out new books! Everyone was quite selective in the stories they chose. A few children wanted to look in the non-fiction section for football books so after we were done in the fiction section, we headed over to the non-fiction section. We found the sports stories and chose a few books that looked appealing.

After everyone found four stories, we took a puppet show break! Friends took turns with the puppets. We all worked together to tell different stories using animals; the audience clapped (quietly of course!) several times.

PB141034PB141037

A few librarians and guests commented on how quiet we were along with how well formed our line was! We said thank you with BIG smiles on our faces.

PB141040

The welcome activity consisted of white tiles and Montessori numbers. Maddie used her one to one correspondence skills to put the correct number of tiles to the red number. After, she discussed what number was smaller or larger.

DSCN1050DSCN1052

Miss Kim put painting supplies out at the art table this morning where children had the option to paint with feathers! We found out that the feather made different lines than a regular paint brush.

DSCN1065DSCN1066DSCN1070

Breakfast– Cheerios and PPC kiwi.

Lunch– Refried bean and shredded cheese on whole wheat flatbread, PPC cantaloupe, and PPC cauliflower.

PM snack– Goldfish and sunflower seeds.

Good Afternoon!

Mack asked for the moon sand this morning. They used a variety of utensils to scoop up sand to fill a container to make a cake with honey.

DSCN0940DSCN0943

We enjoyed the habitrail area. We had the balls out to hold and carry around as we were climbing and sliding down the slide.

DSCN0959DSCN0953

We spent some quiet time looking at a book.

DSCN0971DSCN0972

We loved being able to go outside. We rode with a friend on the teeter totter, climbed up on the climbing house and found an earwig to observe in a bucket.

The friends before their nap time were busy dressing up with different hats.
