Good Afternoon!

In kindergarten:

Jackson and Addi got to work as they created their own book. We used the fairytale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ as our inspiration. First, we made sure we had enough pages for the story. Next, by working together, we created our own story using specific details and events that we recalled. I wrote the words as Jackson and Addi said them.

Once we had all of the words, Jackson and Addi put their illustrator caps on as they drew illustrations to match the words. After they were done with their illustrations, we numbered the pages so that they’d be in order.

Before lunch, we read everyone the story that they created!

K.W.1: Write for specific purposes and audiences.

During kindergarten sign in, Addi and Jackson focused on hearing vowels that they used in their writing.

Journal time today consisted of a few older friends trying to hear vowel sounds when they started to describe their drawing. Maddie drew her family during journal time. Kid spelling is a crucial part of the writing process. She heard a few vowels in ‘Mi Famale’ and while it isn’t ‘teacher spelling’ as we call it, she’s hearing various vowel sounds which will allow us to continue working on what she’s hearing and translating that to paper.

This is where we insert the topic of developmentally appropriate practice. Here’s a short article about developmentally appropriate practice and how it fits into the early childhood setting.

K.RF.4.3: Recognize the long and short sounds for the five major vowels.

Good Afternoon!

**JUST A REMINDER: TOMORROW IS PAJAMA DAY!

In kindergarten:

The light table was made available in the science area. Addi, Maddie, and Lulu started out by using various manipulatives including rocks, seashells, and gems.

We brought math into the equation by asking a question similar to the following: “If I have five rocks, how many more would I need to have if I wanted ten total rocks?”

Various methods were used to find the answer including using fingers to count, counting with the manipulatives, and counting inside of our head.

K.CA.4: Find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number for any number from 1 to 9 (e.g., by using objects or drawings), and record the answer with a drawing or an equation.

Next, we got the seashells down. Besides using descriptive words to describe the physical aspects of the seashells, we also listened to see if we could hear the ocean!

Miss Tami bought us new foam puzzles! (THANK YOU!) We had a fantastic morning exploring the various foam puzzles that were added to our collection. All morning AND afternoon, the circle table was full of children completely puzzles. The puzzles vary in difficulty, allowing us to test ourselves and challenge our thinking.

Most children completed every new foam puzzle, commenting on their favorite one!

The art table became full as friends created with markers and scissors.

We extended the kindergarten FAB to the art table.

“There are two purple markers in the block. How many more purple markers would I need if I wanted ten total markers?”

“Eight more markers!”

A few of our younger friends used their fine motor skills to practice cutting using scissors and paper. Children worked on holding the scissors correctly and making slits along the outside of the paper.

Lunch– Brown rice with shredded beef, cantaloupe, and peppers.

  • Problem solving
  • Fine Motor Development
  • Hand and eye coordination
  • Social skills
  • Self esteem

Good Afternoon!

The art table was converted to an area for paint exploration. Using several colors, children painted many pictures using circular sponge brushes.

Friends used the brush in a variety of ways. We dotted. We painted straight lines. We connected the dots using BOTH of these techniques!

Whether it’s using markers, paint, or another medium, children are proud of what they create. We show our peers. We show our teachers. We show our parents. Often, accompanied by a huge smile and great self worth.

We were ecstatic to be outside this morning. A little sunshine on the face does the body good!

DSCN3694DSCN3695

We were deep in thought before lunchtime—>

“There’s something high up in that tree! I wonder what it is?”

We gave several ideas such as a bag, balloon, and kite! As a group, we talked about how it got so high in the tree. “It must have been the wind because it’s so high up in the tree!” We continued to think about this the rest of the morning!

Lunch– Ham and turkey on whole wheat bread, banana, and cherry tomatoes.

Hello!

**WE ARE PLANNING TO HAVE A PAJAMA DAY FRIDAY, MARCH 31ST.

In kindergarten today:

Addi played a version of hide and seek! There were twenty eggs hidden throughout the house. She found one egg at a time and brought it to me. In the eggs, numbers from 1 to 20 were written. Addi told me what the number was as well as the number one less AND one more than that specific number. For instance, Addi opened an egg with the number 8 written on a piece of paper. Addi told me the number as well as that 7 is one less than 8 and 9 is one more than 8.

After we found all of the eggs, Addi separated the colored eggs and counted what color had the most and least! Throughout the activity, our one to one correspondence skills were used as well as using the terms more and less in our conversations.

K.NS.3: Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 20.

DSCN3560DSCN3563DSCN3566

In large group:

We read Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs Missing Treasure. Before group, I picked out a few words from the story; look, not, sail, and eat. We changed one letter from three words while adding a letter to the other so it completely changes the words. First, we talked about ‘look’. We added a ‘B’ to ‘ook’ and sounded out the word. Throughout the activity, friends observed that the beginning sound changed while the rest of the word stayed the same. A few older friends even commented, “If we added a ‘c’ to ‘ook’, it’d be ‘cook’!”

K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.

DSCN3603DSCN3604

We worked on our hand/eye coordination and our fine motor skills as we worked on our puzzles and drawing our pictures.

DSCN3529DSCN3530DSCN3542

While we were outside, Lucy and Anna were doing their own version of ring around the rosie. They were spinning around in a circle and then falling down without holding each others hands.

DSCN3586

We also enjoyed making a pizza with the sand in the sandbox, going down the slide, playing together with a few friends with the trucks and climbing to the top of the log house.

DSCN3570DSCN3593

DSCN3602DSCN3599

Breakfast: Whole grain Cheerios and pears.

Lunch: Hummus on whole wheat tortillas, cherry tomatoes and oranges.

Afternoon Snack: Whole wheat bagels with cream cheese and oranges.

Wee Sprouts: Cucumbers.

Have a great night!

An early reminder: Wee Friends is closed Friday, April 14th in observance of Good Friday.

We started our morning with jumping on the trampoline! A few friends decided to do some yoga while they were at it, and some decided to take a rest.

DSCN8412DSCN8430

We very much enjoyed our time out in the fresh air. Friends did a lot of digging in the wet sandbox and throwing and kicking balls around the yard.

DSCN8468DSCN8492DSCN8464DSCN8498

Then after snack we gathered around the sensory table to play with the magnets. Friends were in a silly mood and pretended the magnets were cars and hats.

DSCN8578DSCN8587

Breakfast was whole wheat toast with butter and cinnamon and banana. Wee sprout was corn. Lunch consisted of whole wheat pasta with chicken, corn, and kiwi. Afternoon snack was wheat crackers and string cheese.
