Good Afternoon! Today was baking Friday at Wee Friends! We had some over ripe bananas and decided to make banana bread for our afternoon snack. Before we began adding all the ingredients together, many friends shared that they love banana bread and have made it at home. We then all helped add and stir to mix the ingredients together. When it was afternoon snack time, Lulu and Maddie both said, “we are so hungry for delicious banana bread.” Here is the link to the recipe we followed. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/banana_bread/ .

Our day was also busy with  building train tracks,  making our own buildings out of legos, creating our own drawings at the art table and enjoying wonderful stories with a friend.

DSCN3361DSCN3360DSCN3334DSCN3359

Just before outside time we all gathered in the reading area to pick a friend’s name from the name jar. Grady’s name was picked to take potty duck home for the weekend.

We have a new tub for our sensory table, filled with magnets!

DSCN8171DSCN8165DSCN8149

Our friends enjoyed this new activity. Once they realized the magnets connect they tried to stick as many magnets as they could together.  A few friends built structures out of the magnets on the ledge of the table, exactly like they do with the Magna-Tiles.

Breakfast was Kix and banana. Lunch consisted of whole grain brown rice with pork, banana, and peas. Afternoon snack was wheat crackers and cream cheese.

Good Afternoon!

In large group, we read ‘Wodney Wats Wobot’. Wodney’s real name is Rodney but he can’t pronounce his R’s! Rodney had a robot who would repeat everything!

After the story was done, I put three library books on the bench. The names of the stories as well as the author were written down on sentence strips. I asked friends to raise their hand and tell me if they’ve ever been to the library before. We discussed how the librarian categorizes the books in the library. Specifically, we looked at the last name of the authors. Using the three books we had, we put them into alphabetical order by looking at the first letter of the authors last name.

Friends continued to explore our EGG! This morning, we took the egg out of the Karo Syrup and passed it around the table. We found it to be extremely mushy and squishy while still in contact.  We put the egg into a container of water for two hours.

We turned the play clock to 11:00 which is when the egg would be ready. Jackson periodically checked the clock to keep track of how long we had until we could get the egg out!

DSCN3239DSCN3245DSCN3250

The clock finally hit 11:00! We gathered around the table again and Miss Melinda gently placed the egg in the center of the table.

DSCN3275DSCN3277

Friends watched as Miss Melinda took a tooth pick to pop open the egg. We were waiting for a BIG explosion. The explosion was a little lacking but we enjoyed touching the outer shell of the egg which was very slimy and wiggly.

DSCN3280DSCN3286

Children used many spaces throughout the house this morning. Grady sprawled out and completed a floor puzzle while Addi and Jackson used the magnetic balls to fill the stools in the science area.

DSCN3311DSCN3308DSCN3236

First thing this morning, we opened the corn sensory bin. After playing with it for a while, we decided we’d like to investigate the moon sand. The corn and moon sand are two completely different sensory experiences and we enjoyed both immensely.

Good Afternoon!

In Kindergarten today, we worked on making singular words (nouns specifically) into plural words. For example, during sign in this morning, Jackson and Addi had to take the word ‘dog’ and make it plural. We used pictures to help us as well as personal experiences. I asked Addi and Jackson how many dogs they have and they responded, “one DOG”. I asked them how many dogs Miss Tami has; they both responded, “three DOGS”. We noticed how an ‘s’ appeared. We talked about adding an ‘s’ when there’s more than one of an object.

K.W.6.1a: Nouns/Pronouns—Writing sentences that include singular and/or plural nouns.

Our theme today was retelling stories using our own words. A few younger friends gathered around Jackson this morning while Jackson retold a story that he was familiar with. While Jackson wasn’t reading the story word for word, Jackson picked out key details and events throughout the story to get the theme across to his friends.

In large group, we read a story that we’ve read before: Sneaky Weasel. A friend had asked that I get it again from the library so before we read it, we discussed as a group certain events or details that we remembered. Friends talked about the events and then we put them into the order in which they happen in the story. We read the story to see if we were correct in our order!

This week, we’ve started to look at our books in the reading area as well as the library books that I have. Friends look at the last name of the author and put them into order. For instance, today we looked at author’s names; one last name started with a ‘D’ and the other started with a ‘G’. We discussed the order of letters and which came first.

Today, we checked on our egg experiment!

First we used our sense of sight to observe the egg and talk about how the appearance of the egg had changed.

DSCN3180

We got a regular egg out of the refrigerator and compared the physical attributes of both.

DSCN3183DSCN3184

Children used descriptive words to describe the regular egg: “hard”, “cold”, and “small” are words that we heard from various friends.

DSCN3186DSCN3187

Afterwards, Miss Melinda carefully took the egg out of the jar and placed it into the bowl. The first thing we noticed was that the shell had come off! Friends used gentle touches to touch the egg because we noticed that it could break fairly easily. A few descriptive words we heard to describe the egg: “soft”, “squishy”, and “icky”.

After we all had a chance to feel the egg, the egg was put in a jar with Karo Syrup for 12 hours. What do YOU think will happen to the egg? (..good convo starter for tonight Smile)

DSCN3188DSCN3191

We decorated a portion of the classroom with our coffee filter flowers and we ended up finding bunny ears in the basement so we put a basket of them in habitrail. We originally put them in the housekeeping area but all we wanted to do was bounce! So, we transferred the bunny ears to the habitrail area so we could bounce our little hearts out.

Good Afternoon!

This week is ‘Severe Weather Preparedness Week’. You might have heard the tornado sirens going off around 10:15 this morning. Inside Wee Friends, we were going through our ‘Tornado Drill’.

A few minutes before the sirens went off, we had a discussion about tornados. A few friends shared the following:

“A tornado has really strong winds. It can pick up a house.”

“There’s an eye in the middle of the tornado.”

“When there’s a tornado, we go into my basement at home.”

Given our prior knowledge of tornados, we talked about things we didn’t know! Such as:

1. There are different sizes and strengths of tornados.

2. If you don’t have a basement, the best place to be in your house is in a room without windows.

3. The sirens are used to HELP us, not scare us.

Once the sirens went off, we carefully headed downstairs and all sat in a circle. A few of us were scared about the process and the best way to become unafraid is to become familiar with the routine. Tonight, there’s another round of tornado sirens going off at 7:35 pm that are geared towards families practicing their tornado routine!

DSCN3119

Other than our tornado drill this morning, friends used droppers to decorate coffee filters that we’ll later turn into flowers.

We also took a look at our egg soaked in vinegar. Friends made several observations such as “the egg’s really big” and “there’s bubbles all over the egg”. Tomorrow is when we take the egg out and observe the effects the vinegar has had on the egg.

DSCN3112DSCN3115

We turned on various types of music this morning. The soundtrack of ‘Beauty and the Beast’, instrumental music, and ‘nighttime’ music as we call it! Friends requested maracas and drums.

DSCN3101DSCN3106

We spent most of our morning outside where Addi, Jackson, and Tate made a car out of tree stumps! Children LOVED the sunshine on their faces.

DSCN3152DSCN3154

Breakfast– Brown rice crisps and kiwi.

Lunch– Refried bean and melted cheese on flatbread, strawberries, and peas/corn.

PM snack– Apples and bagels with cream cheese.

Wee Sprout– Cherry tomatoes.

Have a fantastic night!

This morning, the links were put out on the table for children to manipulate. Our younger friends used them to count, using their one to one correspondence skills. Addi and her older friends used the links to form groups of ten. We counted by tens as well as separated the links into equal groups.

K.NS.6: Recognize sets of 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

DSCN2957DSCN3021DSCN3015

Miss Melinda and Jackson headed up an investigation this morning. We put an egg into vinegar and on Wednesday, we’re going to observe what happened to the egg. Stay tuned…
