ADA!!!!

Yikes!

Another apology to Ada and her Mom and Dad for her omission in yesterday’s blog! I’m so sorry!

096

Ada has been really interested in worms for the last couple days. With her buddies Kai and Stephen, she has scoured the backyard hunting for worms and other bugs. She and Stephen spend lots of time together each day.

See you this afternoon!

ANNIE!!!!!!!!!

113

Please forgive me for omitting Annie! Annie’s main area of interest these last several days is creating letter path games. She created letter games for her entire name and then began again. She has also made several requests to paste numbers on paper. You can find her most days with her dear buddies Jane and Kai.

🙂

WF Daily Explorations Wednesday 11/16

Each day WF teachers try to step back and take a few quiet moments to simply observe the children as they play and learn. It gives us a chance to assess what our friend’s are learning, absorbing and interested in. Here are some insights that we gathered today:

021 075 098

When Alexandra walked in this morning and heard the gentle music playing she asked Melinda “Can we have music meditation?” When Laurie arrived, she collected her green mat and positioned herself to meditate!

Simon likes to begin his day in the reading area with a book. You can always find him there gently easing into morning with a book.

We are just getting to know Elliott and his curiosity about his new environment and friends keeps him on the move. For the first time since he started, he chose to pedal his trike around our circle. He then moved to the big kids red bike and exclaimed “I’m a big boy!” At one point we heard him yell “Simon!” At today’s concert rehearsal, he sang, by heart, the first lyric to “Wee Friends, Wee Friends, Mighty Mighty Wee Friends..”!!

011 001 015

This morning as Nate ate breakfast, he looked at Elliott and expressed “haircut!”. His keen observation was apparent again as he sifted through our baby animals cards. He chose three cards (out of 30 or so): an orangutan, gorilla and monkey, laid them out next to one another, recognizing they are all a part of one family.

Stephen, daily, incorporates Batman into his play. He creates multiple structures that Batman might use. In imaginative dramatic play, Batman always makes an appearance.

At some point each day, Arleigh asks for music. Yesterday, at naptime, when an upbeat song played, we found her on her cot jamming out. Recently, she has asked for Malificent (from our Fairy Tale study) and our Ship at Storm track.

034 053 013

Alma is particularly interested in sharks. Like Stephen, she incorporates shark play into many improvisational moments. She has also enjoyed playing Malificent with Arleigh. Her first question each day is “Where is my best friend?”

Macy has been interested in acting out Grocery Store in housekeeping. For the last several days, as cashier, she has set up the cash register, gathered wooden coins and has sold stuffed animals to all her friends. She is a devoted lunch buddy to Elliott and today we saw her kiss him on the cheek as they waited together to wash their hands.

We have seen Jane act out the part of a teacher several times over the last few days. She has taught Annie her letters and led a group of kids in a sandbox activity. The calls all of her friends “Sweetie”.

051 100 046

Umi loves her brother Marat. Everyday she tells us that her brother is one of her best friends, Alma, of course, being the other.

Addi’s favorite moments are snuggling with teachers. As we are working and playing, we will find Addi very close, offering to help and just enjoying being close to us.

Knowing that Stephen loves hammers, Kai spent some time at the workbench making one for him. Each day we see Kai approaching friends as a positive role model and compassionate person.

Owen loves ships. All sorts, anywhere, anyhow! Because he was with us all morning, we had the opportunity to explore his interest in an educational, fun way! We discussed several different types of boats (canoes, sailboats, tugboats, warships to name a few). In hopscotch, Owen led us in a gross motor exploration of turning our bodies into the different ship’s shapes.

024

Each of our friends bring their own unique interests and learning styles to our environment. It makes for interesting, inspiring and very busy days!

For breakfast this morning we served oatmeal and bananas. Lunch was Tami’s delicious three bean soup, bananas and homemade biscuits. For snack we served cottage cheese and pineapple.

See you tomorrow at 4:30 for the WF Fall Concert. It runs about 5 minutes long. Have a great day.

016

Next Thursday, Nov. 17th at 4:30 Wee Friends will sing several of the songs we have been working on all year-and a couple new ones! Melinda taught us the Chicken Dance!

Each time we rehearse, we instruct the children “If you are a taller friend stand on the back row. If you are a smaller friend, stand on the front row.” With our guidance, and the help of each other, friends organize themselves accordingly. Today we determined that our smaller friends would be more comfortable sitting down. After we are all assembled, we sing through our songs. The two main points we work on are 1) singing in a natural inside voice and 2) singing all together. Wait until you hear your singers! They are amazing!

029

In the art room, Annie asked if she could make another alphabet letter game. This led to a Thomas the Tank Engine sticker exploration. Elliott, an avid train lover, began his day very happy! Owen helped Elliott unstick some stickers and Simon knew the names of each train!

046 048 051

053 057

In housekeeping, Kai, Annie, Macy and Nate set up shop, selling babies and stuffed animals. They used wooden chips for money and counted out loud as they popped them into the cash register.

008 010 012

Back in hopscotch Jane, as the teacher, instructed, helped and cheered on friends as they jumped off blocks.

069

Friends played with sticky floam, sorted teddy bears and ships into corresponding colored cups, built structures with Magna-Tiles, explored a pirate ship and played dollies in the loft.

063 071 072

074 081 073

Today for lunch we served whole wheat pasta with chicken, green beans and pears.

018 Have a restful weekend!

WF Daily Explorations

At Wee Friends, each, day, we have the opportunity to observe the many benefits of a multi-aged classroom setting. Stanford PhD and international leader in early childhood education, Lillian Katz, expresses:

“Young children who are encouraged, comforted and nurtured by older children will be able to emulate their older classmates when they themselves become the oldest in the group. Children need opportunities to not only observe and imitate a wide variety of competencies, but also to find companions among their peers who match, compliment or supplement their interests in different ways. In a mixed age group, younger children are capable of participating and contributing to far more complex activities than they could initiate if they were by themselves.”

010

Game playing has emerged as an area of great interest. After breakfast, Kai asked if he could set up a game of “Zingo!”. Alexandra and Nate were the first two friends who joined in. As Kai called out the object, he helped both friends recognize if they had a match on their board. Later, Ada and Arleigh requested that they play on the board’s red side. Simon worked diligently at replacing the tiles into their rightful place.

012 013

We introduced a new game yesterday called “Buckaroo!” which requires players to hang different objects on the donkey’s saddle, making sure the donkey doesn’t buck his hind legs with the growing weight on his back. Alexandra carefully placed objects on his saddle while Annie showed her how to press his tail to get his legs down again.

006

In both scenarios, our Wee Friends were able to work collaboratively on the same game at different developmental levels.

025

At the art table, we set out long strips of construction paper, pieces of paper with numbers 1-10, glue and sparkles. Again, each friend mastered this math/art experience according to their own developmental ability and momentary interest!! Macy sequenced numbers 1-7. Annie chose various numbers and then glued the corresponding number of sparkles to each one. Nate exercised fine motor muscles by squeezing the glue bottle and gluing multiple numbers to the paper strip. Arleigh combined numbers and sparkles in an artistic, creative way. Addie sequenced numbers 8-9 and studied the various sparkly shapes in the bowl.

019 020 017

074

Umi, Alma, Alexandra and Nate gathered in the reading area. They took turns reading books and together, retold the stories and then acted them out. They sat together and talked to each other, sharing ideas and listening to one another.

036

043 051

Alexandra tucked her two older friends in bed and read them a bedtime story.

083

With his two older buddies, Stephen explored Simon’s (on loan!) new washing machine experimenting with all the different items that would fit inside it. Ultimately, we all decided clothes were the best and safest fit!052

Whether it’s working a puzzle, snapping beans or sitting in parallel play with a new friend, Elliott fits right in and participates the many activities we explore each day!

068 070 022

Multi-aged classrooms teach children to “…appreciate their own progress and to develop a sense of this continuity..” -L. Katz

We rehearsed for our upcoming THURSDAY NOV 17th CONCERT at 4:30, introducing a new song! We ate a delicious lunch of peanut butter on whole wheat bread, applesauce and cucumbers with cream cheese.

091

Have a fabulous day.

WF Daily Explorations, Wednesday 11-9-11

Happy Blustery Wednesday!

032This morning was filled with more “gaming”. The children all seem very enthusiastic about this new topic, which may become our next study. Children filled the artroom working with Miss Laurie and Miss Tami on creating their own letter board games with large paper, markers, dot paints, and stickers. They had discussions about the counting of the dice, the paths the counters took, & the rules of their own game. Children recognized that the board games were the first letter of their name and their friends name. Some even realized that Kai was working on a letter A board, which was not the first letter of his name since he was spelling out his name in 3 board games. F.1.16 Identify first letter of own name.F.4.5 Draw at the top or bottom of the page, when requested.F.4.8 Write using pictures, letters, and words.F.6.1 Write from left to right.
F.6.2 Combine strokes and shapes to represent letters.F.1.18 Apply one-to-one correspondence with objects and people.F.2.1 Identify “first” and “last.”F.3.7 Give reason of placement of objects.F.5.16 Tell what comes before and after.

024

While our friends kept the artroom busy all morning, other friends played in housekeeping, played in the workshop, sang, played with floam, read books in small groups with Miss Melinda, and enjoyed a short visit from Jacob who likes to visit his old Wee Frienders.

WF Daily Explorations, Monday 11-7-11

Happy Monday! Today we had a few “new” things! First, our new friend Elliott started Wee Friends. He is very sweet and seemed to enjoy all of his new experiences!

797

Second, we now have a new holes that I made in the walls this weekend. The new opening allows us to have better visibility over the front rooms. A few more coats of paint and we’ll be all set!

This morning was a blue bus morning. The kids spent a lot of time working on balance skills on the balance beam. The reported h798ighlight of this was working on scales (arms out while balancing on one leg) and hopping like a bunny.

Inside, we had lots of story times and the art room was full of eager artists! They drew pictures with markers, used tempera paint at the easel, and everyone was excited to further explore using more corn syrup paint. Miss Melinda discovered this was the favorite paint choice last week in our paint experiments. Today the kids had several colors and created shiny (and sticky!) pictures. Literally, they are good enough to eat.

Also, popular (and new) were the silky capes that reinforces why Tami likes Halloween so much…the clearance sale of costumes after the holiday!

772

Outside, we enjoyed mild temperatures and the kids spent time riding bicycles, climbing on the climber and in the sandbox. The slide was extremely popular with large groups of children negotiating who would go together holding hands down the slide.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR DONATIONS OF…lots of old, smaller sized girl underwear and size 2 & 3 easy to pull up and down pants. We have a gaggle of potty training girls at WeeWee and find ourselves short of “extras”. We like all those ugly & stained items that you wouldn’t want to pass down to anyone else!

For lunch we served whole wheat pasta with marinara, lima beans/corn, and fresh apple slices.

Enjoy your day!

WF Daily Explorations 11/4

005

About two weeks ago, we re-introduced the sign in sheet to our Wee Friends. Each morning, each friend traces the letters of their name. Kindergartener Kai is now working on his last name as well.

007

In preparation for our November 17th 4:30pm Fall Concert, Wee Friends rehearsed four songs: “Flush and Wash”, Wee Friends Anthems #1 and #2 and “The Johnny Appleseed Song.” Mark your calendars and don’t miss it!!

010 017 015

We played the Jumping Beans Game in which a friend pulled out a bean shaped piece of felt with either a dot, a number or a letter on it. If they chose a dotted bean, we sang a song. If it was a lettered bean, we discovered which friend’s name started with that letter. If it was a number on the bean, we performed an action that many times.

018

We started talking about Thanksgiving today. We asked the children “What Do You Know About Thanksgiving?” We read Thanksgiving is for Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland. We discussed the things we are thankful for and created art representing these ideas. We hung the art on our reading area tree.

036

Some friends chose to trace their fingers and turn them into turkeys by gluing multi-colored feathers on them.

039 032 034

Our new friend Elliott spent part of the morning with us, playing in the truck room with Stephen, Nate and Simon. We will welcome him full time on Monday!

For lunch we served melted cheese on whole wheat tortillas, salad and grapes.

002

Have a restful weekend!

WF Daily Explorations Thursday 11/3

This morning Melinda helped friends create three different types of paint.

021

First, friends took turns mixing flour, water and green/blue food dye. Next, they added magenta watercolor to Karo syrup. Lastly, they mixed corn starch, water and orange tempera paint.

006

They studied the recipe and ingredients. They explored the textures of the corn starch and syrup. They measured dry and wet ingredients and worked hard to blend them by vigorously stirring.

014 009 011

016

Afterwards, they used the paint to create a collage. As they painted, a few friends wrote their names or the first letter of their name.

024 026 030

041

Later in the morning we created a message board that asked the question “Which paint was your favorite?” Each friend put a sticker with his/her name under the column representing their favorite paint.

Today for lunch we served toasted ham and cheese on whole wheat muffins, peas and banana/pineapple fruit salad.

039

Have a great day.

” At play, children experiment with what they encounter in their daily lives: fears, pleasurable moments, routines, etc. They put their truth into play. And we adults can understand in these moments the unspoken words of our children, by just observing them, without judgment . In free play, when there is no adult agenda, children follow their inner creativity. I call play the best possibility for children to be themselves.” -Angelique Felix (www.angeliquefelix.com) Article courtesy of WF Teacher Paulina Hayden-THANK YOU Paulina!
