The wet sand and slippery slides didn’t stop the Wee Friends from their play today.

Children explored digging, filling and pouring in both the sand and the rocks.

Our literacy focus this week is all about the alphabet and understanding alphabetical order. For our younger preschoolers this looks like identifying letters and talking about the sounds each letter makes! This morning some children gathered in the reading area to hear a story about letters: My X, Y, Z Book.

Kindergarten: Today our kindergarteners and older preschoolers were invited to practice FAB K.1.19: Learn and apply knowledge of alphabetical order (first letter) when using a classroom or school library/media center (2006 standard). In order to practice alphabetical order, students connected alphabet cards using links. This was both a literacy and fine motor challenge. Elliott chose to make an “alphabet circle” by connecting the A and Z card!

Ruby and David played with the foam boards and pegs this morning. They both enjoy connecting the pegs together to make towers. After stacking all of his pegs together, David pulled them off one by one to stick in the foam boards.

After lunch, we played with playdough and rolling pins! Ruby enjoyed poking holes in the playdough with her fingers and the end of her rolling pin. Anna and Miss Amanda flattened out Anna’s playdough together. Then Anna tore off pieces of it and offered them to Miss Amanda as cookies!

WF Friday 3/11/16

Today children explored our Easter themed sensory bin that is full of eggs, chicks, baskets and purple fuzz!

Blocks were also a popular option today. Below is a collaboratively built firetruck!

Friends were also invited to help create some new artwork for the open space by the cubbies. We traced each individuals hand, cut it out, and then they were free to decorate their hand in any way they wanted. Throughout this process there was lots of talk regarding hand sizes and we realized that everyone’s hand was quite different!

The final product turned out fabulously! Check it out by the cubbies.

Kindergarten: Today we continued our work with punctuation during large group. We went on a punctuation hunt during our story. After every sentence, we marked whether the author used an exclamation point, question mark, or period. It turns out that the characters in My Friend Feels Sad by Mo Williams were very excited; exclamation point won the punctuation hunt!

Wee Sprouts: Cucumbers. Breakfast: Brown rice cakes with peanut butter and grapes. Lunch: Whole wheat tortillas with hummus, carrots/peppers, and bananas/oranges. Snack: Mozzarella string cheese and pretzels.

WF Will Be“Nut-Free”

Good Morning!  The preschool classroom will be going nut-free and we are requesting that any food items that are brought into the classroom are also nut-free (including peanut and other nut products.)  We have a friend that has developed a nut allergy and we need to ensure that our classroom is safe.

The classroom will continue to use no-nut sweet pea butter and I will expand our use of seeds to replace some of the snacks that had nuts.

Thank you so much for your cooperation!

Tami

WF Thursday 3/10/16

This morning started off with an opportunity to practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters with some plastic Easter eggs! Some of our older friends worked on finding the matching letters.

Below, Maddie found “her M!”

Our younger children focused on putting the eggs together, a task that can be quite challenging for little fingers. It’s a great accomplishment when it works!

Today, thanks to the Purple Porch, we had the opportunity to try a papaya! Friends gathered around the island as we cut the tropical fruit open, took out the seeds, and then tried the fruit.

The reactions were mixed:

This morning children were invited to the art table to decorate an egg with strips of tissue paper and glue. Each friend tackled this project in their own way, some choosing to make stripes, while others opted for a more random placement.

There was lots of focus and concentration using fine motor skills to create this festive art. The final results will be displayed back in habitrail!

We had a fun water activity in the kitchen this morning! The sinks were filled with water, toy boats, sea animals, and shaving cream islands for the toys to swim around. The islands lasted only a few minutes. Our friends swirled them into the water and made a foamy sea!

IMG_1261IMG_1271

Outside, our friends collected rocks, leaves, and sticks. Then they brought them to the table to examine. They loved tearing the leaves up!

WF Wednesday 3/9/16

*Reminder: Wee Friends will be closed on Friday, March 25th in observation of Good Friday. In addition, friends have been asking for another Pajama Day! We will have a special Pajama Day on Thursday, March 24th in honor of Luke’s last day here at Wee Friends. Feel free to send children to school in their PJs!

We have been so excited to spend lots of learning time this week in our outdoor environment. Our traditional outdoor areas, such as the truck track and rock pile, get lots of use, but oftentimes we see children exploring the environment in unique ways.

DSCN3486DSCN3523

For instance, a simple cardboard box can become a vehicle, a bed, or even a house!

DSCN3487DSCN3491DSCN3512

Today Eren and Jackson used the sidewalk circle in a different way. Together they used various colors of chalk to draw circles all the way around the sidewalk. They repeated this work multiple times!

DSCN3508DSCN3509

Our outdoor environment and the natural materials available to children invite wonder and curiosity:

Maggie enjoyed a sensory activity in the kitchen this morning. We brought in a tub of corn kernels and black beans. Maggie enjoyed experiencing how the kernels felt in her hands and seeing what happened when she dumped them out of a cup or bowl.

IMG_1143IMG_1134

Our friends love the sandbox! They love using their hands to sift, scoop, and explore. Anna poured some sand on a tree stump and then swiped her hands back and forth to swish it off.
