WF Wednesday 2/17

Today our friends were snow angels and shovelers:

And of course, snow and ice eaters!

Today friends worked on their ordering skills by playing a game of alphabetical war. Each player puts down a card with a picture of a food item and the person with the food that comes first in the alphabet wins both cards (e.g. donut vs. grapes, donut wins!) This game helped friends practice identifying lowercase letters and work on alphabetical order. Sometimes we consulted our handy alphabet chart to check our work.

DSCN2325DSCN2303

Kindergarten: Elliott took the alphabetical war game to another level by picking ten cards to put in alphabetical order. Then he wrote them! Elliott had lots of fun with this process and wrote some lowercase letters as well.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!—Jessica

WWF 2/16

Please note: We would like to start a photo album to keep in the classroom. We’re asking everyone to bring in one or two family photos to add to the album.

During the winter months, its difficult to keep up with the salt that’s tracked through the classroom. Children are crawling through the melted snow and salt and getting their clothes wet. If you don’t mind, please take off your shoes and boots when you come in the door before walking into the environment. Thanks!

What a fun and busy day we had at Wee Wee! Here are a few of our favorite photos.

Good Afternoon!

Teamwork seemed to be the theme throughout the morning. Friends worked with one another to complete puzzles, create with magnatiles, and construct a giant track!

DSCN2166DSCN2168

We’ve seen a lot of constructing lately. Whether friends are using magnatiles, Legos, or another set of blocks, children have pushed their boundaries with what they build and how they build.

DSCN2172DSCN2198

The use of stencils was quite prominent this morning as friends used stencils to create different kinds of art. This activity allows friends to stretch their fine motor skills as it takes concentration to trace with markers which is what our friends love doing!

DSCN2191DSCN2192

DSCN2193

Wow! Did we LOVE being able to spend time outside this morning! The fresh air was terrific and perked all of us up!

Our faces were full of pure joy.

DSCN2232DSCN2237

We created snow balls..specifically to eat.

DSCN2220DSCN2223

A friend even commented, “It’s free food!” (and then proceeded to eat the snow).

DSCN2245DSCN2249

We were extremely interested in the icicles we found around the yard. Our interest continued to peak when we found a jumbo icicle! Jackson carried it around the yard showing it off to friends.

DSCN2253DSCN2257

Wee Sprouts– cucumbers.

Breakfast– corn chex and grapefruit.

Lunch– homemade avocado chicken salad on whole wheat bread/tortilla, pears, and carrots/snap peas.

PM Snack– Whole grain bagel with cream cheese.

**The weather looks good for the rest of the week so hopefully we’ll have many other chances to go outside Smile. Please make sure that your child has the appropriate garments for the weather here everyday (boots, gloves, hat, snow pants, coat). Thanks!

Have a great night!

Our friends love when we have music time and they get to try out the instruments! They enjoy hearing all the different notes that are made.

Ruby, Anna, and David played together in housekeeping and cooked up a feast! Anna used a picnic basket and a tray to carry food around, David used an oven mitt to pick up a pan, and Ruby used a big spoon to stir what was in her pot.

IMG_9778IMG_9786IMG_9792IMG_9771

Franklin loves rocking himself in our rocking chair! He had a fun time doing that this afternoon, and then he relaxed in it with a good book.

WF Monday 2/15/16 Dancing, Climbing, and Numbers Oh My!

DSCN2093When it’s too cold to go outside, we make sure that the Wee Frienders still have ample opportunities to move their bodies and let some energy out. Today that looked like dancing to the “hokey pokey” and “head, shoulders, knees and toes” and taking advantage of climbing on the habitrail!

DSCN2122DSCN2132

The habitrail area also provides children with a safe space to explore activities like gymnastics. Today some friends eagerly worked on their splits and headstands!

DSCN2104DSCN2107

Kindergarten: Today we brought out a new set of monster number cards, 1-100. Friends worked together to arrange the cards in a variety of ways. Some friends first organized the cards by monster type and then ordered them by columns, while others spread them all out and then arranged them numerically. Throughout this process friends made many insightful observations about the numbers, such as noticing the diagonal line formed by the numbers 11, 22, 33, 44, etc. and how in the columns one digit would increase while the other digit stayed the same (e.g. 21, 31, 41, 51, etc.) Funny monsters make big numbers less intimidating!

DSCN2065DSCN2069DSCN2116DSCN2146

Wee Sprouts: Tomatoes. Breakfast: Toasted whole wheat bread with butter and fresh apples. Lunch: Whole wheat pasta with marinara sauce and cheddar cheese, peas and fresh oranges. Snack: Organic whole milk yogurt with oranges.

WF Friday 2/12/16 Melting Hearts

What started out as a kindergarten activity on observation interested so many friends we adapted it to include everyone! Today’s objective was to see if conversation hearts would melt in a variety of substances. At first we started with cold, warm, and hot water. However, it turned out to be a very slow process.

DSCN2001

To speed things up a bit, we tried putting the hearts in some carbonated water. The carbonation moved the hearts all around the beaker, which really intrigued friends.

DSCN2005DSCN2009

Next, we tried the classic baking soda and vinegar mix:

DSCN2014DSCN2015DSCN2016

Throughout the morning friends came to check in on the hearts and see if they had gotten any smaller. We compared their size to a heart that hadn’t been put in anything. By this afternoon the heart in the hot water had completely disappeared! Friends noticed that the water had turned a different color in the process.

DSCN2041

Today was also full of building houses and working with cars:

DSCN2031DSCN2032

Some friends also began asking a lot of questions about tornados today, so we went to the science area and found all our books about weather. Using the table of contents, we were able to find the pages on tornados! We also tried to create a tornado in a jar using water, dish soap, vinegar and glitter, but it wasn’t super successful. We did see how the glitter swirled in the jar though!

Wee Sprouts: Tomatoes and carrots. Breakfast: Brown rice cakes with peanut butter and fresh pears/bananas. Lunch: Whole wheat tortillas with hummus, fresh cauliflower, bananas and grapes. Snack:

Enjoy your Valentine’s Day weekend! –Jessica

WWF 2/11

Anna was looking through her personal journal this morning. She was very happy with the drawings she’s done. You could hear her say things such as, “Beautiful!” and “That’s awesome!”

IMG_9611IMG_9615

This afternoon, we played with Magna-Tiles and the transparent stackers. Friends made roads and towers. We looked through them and made funny faces, too, of course!

IMG_9624IMG_9668

Breakfast was Whole Grain Cheerios and oranges. Lunch consisted of tortillas with turkey and cheese, oranges, and corn. Afternoon snack was pretzels and string cheese.

Have a great night!

WF Thursday 2/11/16

*Please bring in your child’s pre-conference form by tomorrow. Thank you!

This morning friends were invited to the art table to decorate bags for our Valentine exchange tomorrow! Rather than just get out paint and paintbrushes, we decided to switch up our art materials a little bit. Instead of using paintbrushes, friends had the opportunity to use a variety of cardboard tubes to dip into the paint.

DSCN1909DSCN1912

Friends used the tubes in a variety of ways—to press down circles, to glob paint blobs in various shapes, and to drag paint across their bags. One friend noticed that sometimes a bubble of paint was created across the tube! This allowed friends to make complete circles.

DSCN1916DSCN1911DSCN1915

There was lots of focus and concentration throughout this work. These personalized Valentine bags will come in very handy tomorrow!

DSCN1921DSCN1929

Kindergarten: One of today’s activities to practice greater than/less than/equal to involved tools we haven’t gotten out in a while, STAMPS! Elliott stamped a number of his choosing in one box of his paper. Next, he had to figure out a number that was greater than, less than and equal to his original number. Elliott represented the values with both stamps and numerals in the other boxes of his paper.

DSCN1963DSCN1965

Wee Sprouts: Pea pods. Breakfast: Kashi’s Cinnamon Harvest and fresh pears. Lunch: Whole wheat flatbread with turkey and cheddar cheese, carrots, pears and bananas. Snack: Almonds and pretzels.
