Please note: One of the children has been diagnosed with a viral infection. The only known symptom is a fever.

Rosemary asked to play with the animal puzzles today. She made the sounds that matched the animals.

WF Wednesday 8/19

Wee Friends are amazing creators.

Every day we see children utilize materials in unique and surprising ways:

003

Today friends created several different trains out of blocks. Woooo woooo!

011

So many different creations.

013027

Today was Poetry Day in large group. We talked about how poems can be presented in multiple forms. First, we read the poem The Crayon Box That Talked in book form. Next, we watched an animated version (https://vimeo.com/23111919).

 061057

Afterwards, friends were invited to the art table to create their own crayons. Following their interest, this morphed into also creating crayon boxes! Some friends created a whole set of crayons, starting with the primary colors.

It’s amazing to see what children create.

Hello, everyone!

The children spent this morning reading from our collection of books. Rosemary and Anna made a big pile of the ones they wanted to read.

In the afternoon, they played with the animals. Rosemary can name the animals and Anna can roar like a lion!

WF, 8/18/2015

It was a ‘muffin making’ morning! Friends pitched in to make our afternoon snack: Healthy Applesauce Oat Muffins. Friends had a conversation around the island about the muffins we were about to make. We talked about the ingredients along with the steps we were going to take to get to our goal: an awesome PM snack!

015

We got out two bowls: one for our dry ingredients and another bowl for our wet ingredients. Children took turns pitching it. From pouring milk to measuring whole wheat flour, our friends’ contributions were extremely helpful!

019021

A few of our older friends got the opportunity to crack an egg. This takes a lot of concentration and excellent timing: even for adults!

The last step was combining the wet and dry ingredients together. We took turns using an ice cream scoop to scoop our mixture into muffin tins.

They were a BIG hit this afternoon. Wee Friends teamwork at its finest.

023025030034

Building block construction occurred this morning in the habitrail area. We worked together to create a structure where friends participated in play together.

001004

Journaling gives children the opportunity to express what they may be thinking or feeling by putting it down on paper. Children are often extremely determined and concentration levels are high (i.e sticking out your tongue..something I know I do!)

006007008

I think overall, it was a concentration Tuesday..ending with this magnatile structure!

“Every child has a different learning style and pace. Each child is unique, not only capable of learning but also capable of succeeding.”—Robert John Meehan

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”—Ignacio Estrada

For breakfast, children had Kashi Blueberry Clusters and PPC kiwi. Lunch consisted of cheese tortillas, green grapes, and PPC tomatoes/carrots. PM snack was our homemade whole grain applesauce oat muffins with string cheese.

Hope everyone has a terrific evening.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

We want to welcome our newest Wee Wee Friend, Brycen and his family. Brycen is going to be such an added delight to our environment.

To start our day of fun, David, Rosemary, and Anna were going up and down the classroom slide over and over again. The laughs and giggles were such a joy for all of us to hear on this Monday morning.

WF Monday 8/17

Today we danced.

011023

We created with play dough.

033

And had a tea party!

037

Today we also gathered in the reading area to learn more about crinoids, or what Wee Frienders call “Indian beads.” These fossils are commonly found in our rock pile in the back; friends often search for and collect them. Thanks to Elizabeth’s mom, we received lots of information on crinoids, including pictures. We were excited to find out more about these fossils. Thank you Kristin!

051058

We looked at the crinoid fossils from our own backyard as well as pictures of modern crinoids.

054055

Who knew something so interesting was in our own backyard?!

Have a great day! –Jessica

WF Friday 8/14 Graduation Day!

*Attention parents: We want to let you know that another friend was diagnosed with strep throat. We have taken care to sanitize Wee Friends and hope that it runs its course over the weekend! Hope all our friends feel better soon.

Today was a bittersweet day as we said farewell to two of our Wee Friends! This morning, we had a short graduation ceremony, complete with graduation caps and Pomp and Circumstance. Friends gathered in the reading area as our graduates walked down the aisle.

015019

They were presented with their graduation certificates and a special photo album filled with goodbye messages and pictures from their many years at Wee Friends.

020

We continued this special day with some water play! The sprinkler and water table were a great way to cool off in all this humidity.

029036051

Balancing containers of water requires a lot of focus and concentration!

042044049

In addition this week we have been working on a special paper mache project: we made our very own three-legged unicorn piñata! Friends each took a turn whacking the unicorn. Cassie took the very last hit, breaking it open. Some goodies (pencils/stickers/little horns) were inside!

077081088

It’s been a wonderful day celebrating our graduates.

021

Best of luck in Kindergarten, Eleanor and Owen! We will miss you so much.

–Jessica

WF Thursday 8/13

Learning takes place in many different ways here at Wee Friends. Through a mix of direct teaching and child initiated play, our children are exposed to a wealth of  learning opportunities throughout the day.

For instance, today, some teacher-led activities looked like this: matching uppercase Scrabble letters to the correct lowercase letters and parking numbered cars in the right parking spot.

001004

Child-led work looks like this: building an airplane out of plastic and wooden blocks and communicating/negotiating with each other about where each piece should go.

006

We provide a stimulating environment and engaging materials for friends to use. For instance, friends can build with pegs, explore how light works with a Lite-Brite or build a car out of sand toys, whatever they choose.

012022034

By giving children the opportunity to choose the activities they want, the peers with whom they will work and how they will use available materials, they take ownership of their learning!

And a love of learning is what it’s all about.
