014

012

013

Music time started shortly after. Our friends used their imaginations by pretending they were going to sleep. They used scarves as their blankets and covered up their friends for bedtime. Ozzie put on a dramatic rendition of ABC’s. When he was finished, all of his friends clapped! We sang the lady bug song. The lady bug started at the toes and went up to the head! Everyone had a great time watching and wondering where the lady bug was headed next.

013

022

024

Once there was sufficient cloud coverage, WFs used felt runways to ascend through the air.

028

037

When they had finished this part of their exploration, we moved the materials to the sensory bin. Elliott requested an air traffic control tower and the work continued.

042

Viv found an air traffic controller.

046

Arleigh discovered that she could pull the cotton balls apart and went on to make a pie.

055

Later, Viv and Marta practiced the piano.

Parent/Teacher Partnership Info:

On another note, this Saturday the WF staff attended an outstanding conference with Michael Brandwein (www.michaelbrandwein.com) as the keynote. His focus was “Life Skills: Getting Kids Ready for Life”. We were all inspired, affirmed and excited about a formula that he presented to use when communicating with our Wee Friends. When working with our friends, we first DESCRIBE what they are doing. Secondly, we LABEL it in a positive way. Lastly, we ENCOURAGE the positive behavior. An example is: Sally is playing dominoes with her friends. She sees that another friend would like more dominoes. Sally chooses to share her dominoes with her friend.

Teacher: “Sally, I see that you have shared your dominoes with Mary. You are choosing to be very cooperative. When you are cooperative, we can all play together peacefully. Sally, thank you for being cooperative.”

Our Wee Sprouts today are broccoli crowns. Breakfast was Cheerios and clementines. For lunch, we are serving melted cheddar on whole wheat tortillas, fresh beets/peas and fresh fruit salad (strawberries, raisins and clementines.

Have a terrific day!

Good Afternoon!

We started our Monday off by gathering in the kitchen to do many activities. First, our friends used markers to color on paper. Then, they took the paper to the light table to see what it would look like if we turned the light on! Children loved to look at their creation when light was shining through it. A few friends worked with their numbers using teddy bears made out of construction paper. They counted them and looked at the different numbers of each bear. 001

002

004

008

Kids worked on their fine motor skills by cutting the paper with scissors. In the beginning, friends thought this was a hard task but by the end of the activity, children were beginning to get the hang of it!

005

006

007

In the living room, our friends got food out and offered a buffet of food on the table! Friends came prepared and loaded their plate up with food.

009

It’s starting to feel like March! We had to buddle up with coats and hats and we traveled outside. It was nice not to have to worry about coats for a while! :). Our friends rode their bikes and played in the sandbox while outside.

For breakfast, our friends had cheerios with apples. AM snack was fresh peppers. Lunch consisted of turkey sandwiches on whole wheat bread, strawberries and bananas, and green peas and broccoli. PM snack was raisins and cheese.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

WF Daily Explorations 3.26.2012 “We are flying now!”

This was our view as we looked out of our airplane windows as we flew over South Bend….

No, really, we would have loved to give the kids that experience, but there is no way a few of our kids could have made it through security.  So this is what we explored:

We started at the Allegiant Air Ticket Sales desk. The gentleman there explained how to get a ticket.  The children were able to see the conveyer belt used for checked lugguge.

The children really enjoyed looking at the large planes that were hanging.

Miss Lisa explained the arrival and departure screens. Also, piling 15 children and 4 teachers into the little airport elevator was quite fun!

Everyone was very interested in watching what happens behind the scenes at the observation deck.

Miss Laurie pulled back the divider on the luggage conveyer and we had a nice conversation with the luggage handler.

Next, TSA officer, Stacy, came out and explained how they do their job.  It wasn’t scary at all and there were no body cavity searches.  Whew!  When she was done, the kids serenaded her with the WF anthem, which drew a small crowd of TSA people and put a smile on all of their faces.

Our friendly luggage handler, Jeff, stopped by and talked with children some more.

We loaded into the Weehicle and Tami’s Honda and drove over to the back of the airport to watch for arriving and departing planes.  We were incredibly fortunate to see a small plane land and a small plane depart.  The children could not have been more excited to witness this up close!

This was an incredible way to start off this new interest of the WF children.  The teachers will be carefully observing and listening to the children to see if they have questions to investigate that would turn this into the next WF Project (or as we often call them… A Study).

Have a fabulous afternoon!

Tami

Hello!

We started our morning with a bubbly sensory activity! Our friends worked with bubbles! Children worked with bubbly water as well as looking and touching bubbles that were floating through the air. Kids loved when the bubble popped on their hand. We also worked with blowing bubbles and blowing air out of our mouths.

WF Air Flight 123

In the absence of the Blue Bus on Monday, we would like to take all Wee Friends on a field trip to the South Bend Regional Airport. Our days this week have been filled with airport/airplane exploration and we think it will be a great adventure to incorporate into our blossoming study! Tami will email permission slip forms to you. Please return them Monday morning when you bring your WF to school. We will be departing at 9:30 and returning in time for noon lunch. We will take both the Weehicle and Tami’s Honda. While all four teachers will be accompanying the class on the field trip, parent volunteers are welcome!

While we ate lunch, we collected some information from our Wee Friends. When we asked “Where did you fly to on an airplane?” here’s what we learned:

Umi: “Chile!”

Annie: “Disneyworld and somewhere else.”

Ada: “I haven’t been on a plane.”

Nate: “New York!”

Max: “Minnesota and California!”

Vivian: “Minnesota and California!”

Kai: “Arizona and California.”

Alexandra: “I don’t know.”

Marta: “I went on the airplane!”

Finn: “spain!”

Stephen: “To the Batman store!”

Jane: “Grandpa’s house.”

Macy: “Aunt Ashley’s wedding.”

Simon: “To my Grandma’s house, England, New Jersey and Chicago.”

Elliott: “I flew to Florida.”

Hello!

Our friends started off their morning by doing a painting activity. Children used flowers petals, paint, and tape to make their masterpieces! Sloane chose to work with the flower petals and mix them with the blue paint that she was using. Jada worked with pink paint and painted the flowers leafs using her hands. Lea took her flower and dipped it into the paint so she could paint with her flower. Marina painted over the tap that was on her paper to make a unique design.

WF Daily Explorations Thursday 3/22

It has been a beautiful spring morning in our classroom!

Many friends gathered on the rug this morning and pulled out all the building blocks. Stephen began building a tunnel. It morphed into an intensive, morning long airplane exploration. Elliott described and built runways, towers and deemed himself co-pilot to Finn’s pilot role play. Lisa invoked her eight year journey as a flight attendant and, with a perfectly scripted monologue, directed passengers to their seat, asked them to buckle up and put their tray tables up. We added environmental sounds of a jet taking off and inner flight noise. Flight Attendant Lisa gave passengers the choice between chicken and pasta and their choice of beverages. Night fell as we were in the air and the passengers slept as John Denver sang “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. We landed and headed outside!

Good Afternoon!

Our friends started off their day by doing an activity in the sensory tub. First, colorful bags and silver circular tubes were put in the bin for children to observe and manipulate. Then, play-dough was added along with pipe cleaners. Children started to poke the play-dough and put the pipe cleaners and silver tubes into the play-dough. Ozzie observed the different characteristics of the silver tube. He observed that the tube had a circle at the bottom. Chloe, Sloane, and Lea took the silver tubes and put them around the pipe cleaner. This took a great deal of concentration.

Important Parent Reminders!

Breakfast is served from 7:45am-9:00am and Wee Sprouts are served all day. If your child arrives to school after 9:00am, please make sure they have had breakfast!

We prefer that ‘at home’ toys stay at home to avoid conflict in the classroom. If your child does have a toy that is brought in, we ask that it is small enough to fit inside the cubby. We will invite our friends to share/show their toy for the first couple moments after they’ve arrived and then we’ll ask them to put it away until mom and dad come at the end of the day. Thank you so much for honoring this. It truly eliminates additional conflict as we help our Wee Friends navigate other natural conflicts throughout the day.
