Good Afternoon!

We’re giving Elizabeth our ‘sunglass kid’ award today 🙂

The WWF house started off the morning with a sensory activity. Our hands were blue but the kids spirits were high! Thanks to our friends next door, we were able to manipulate rice that was died blue. Kids sifted, poured, and measured the rice along with just finding out how it felt on their hands. There was great interaction happening while the kids were in discovery mode. Our friends talked to each other about what they were finding out. 001

008

014

Chloe loved using the ladle to pour the rice into different areas of the bin while Olivia chose to use a bowl for the rice. Our friends were sharing their utensils with one another and making sure that all of their friends had something to discover with. Jada was interested in looking at each grain of rice individually and pointing out characteristics such as ‘it’s small’. After some discovery time, our friends began to find out that if they moved the rice enough, they could see the light from the light table. They found this extremely interesting and loved ‘looking for the light’!

Sloane decided to hold a cup in one hand and the ladle in the other hand and pour the rice back and forth. Her measuring skills are top notch!

After discovering different characteristics about the blue rice, Lea decided to color. She was very precise as to how to color with her markers. She got down close to the paper and really focused her attention on the stroke that she was on.

037

038

After sensory time in the kitchen, our friends ventured outside! From what we hear, the weather is supposed to be getting more ‘spring’ like! Fingers are crossed! P.K. decided to use his gross motor skills by walking and finding a way to get up the stairs. Marina loves to venture out and explore the back yard! She had a great time swinging with her new friend Chloe as well as riding different tri-cycles.

Clara decided that she wanted to use her gross motor skills by crawling herself over to a basket and sitting in it. She thought this was funny as she began laughing, causing her friends to laugh as well :)! Ozzie decided to start a puzzle which he was extremely successful at. Ozzie is a big fan of cars and trains so this was right up his alley!

For breakfast this morning, our friends enjoyed whole wheat toast with soy butter and fresh pears. For AM snack, we had broccoli. Our lunch consisted of melted ham and cheese on whole wheat tortillas, peas, and fresh pear slices. This afternoon we had rice cakes with cream cheese and raisins/craisins. This snack is always a big success 🙂

Hope everyone has a great evening!

WF Daily Explorations Tuesday 2/28

The day started on a happy note! 010

Note from Tami about swimming…

“Today we started our spring swimming lesson session at the YMCA. Because our size is so large, it took some manipulating to make us fit with the YMCA for this session and this meant it happened literally at the last moment, that our kids were able to be in the Tuesday class that we started today. I apologize for the last minute notice! To be clear, I only contacted families that I invited to attend this session.

We cannot take every child to swim lessons, so we rotate the children. Please understand that every effort is made to keep it balanced and that I understand that most families really do want this opportunity. I will be contacting families in the next few weeks about signing up for the Spring 2 class that starts mid-April. Back to Laurie:)…”

While our swimmers were away, our friends explored a variety of sensory/fine motor experiences. First, we set out trays with wooden clothespins, pipe cleaners and coffee filters. Friends practiced opening and closing the pins, clipping them to coffee filters and sticking pipe cleaners in one of the few holes on the clothespin.

This morning, gymnasts worked on the climbing ladder and incline mat. They used the rope ladder to climb to the top of the bus and touch the ceiling. They learned glide and tuck swings and on the incline mat, did forward and backward rolls.

Last Friday afternoon, Simon brought in face paints! Wee Friends flipped through many pages of faces, chose which design they wanted and the teachers got to work painting! Kai has requested that every Friday afternoon be a face painting afternoon!

While the older Wee Friends were on the Blue Bus, our smaller Wee Friends worked with wine corks. First, friends counted and sorted the corks into baskets. Next, they used ink pads to stamp the corks onto construction paper. We they discovered that the corks did not hold ink so well, they switched to paint. Older friends joined in when they returned from the Blue Bus.

Ada, Simon and a few other friends worked with the mathematical concept: more than/less than. Using a message board filled with numbers, we first explored which numbers were ‘1 more than’ and ‘1 less than’. Then we matched our small number boards the corresponding written number. After that, we sorted piles of oranges according to the number board we chose. This exercise turned into a shape exploration with Simon and Ada stacking/balancing and arranging oranges artfully (a shark!). When the fruit came out, more friends joined in to see what was being worked on.

049

053 059 060

Over the weekend, Chase and Kaitlyn created a castle at the workbench. Tami set this out and a small group of friends sat down to cut and create felt clothes for the wooden clothespin people.

061 057 063

Elliott picked out two rhythm sticks and started singing “Twinkle Twinkle” tapping the sticks in an even rhythm as he sang. Other friends joined in and we continued exploring rhythm by singing two nursery rhymes and comparing which was faster/slower by the way we tapped our sticks. We played “Puff the Magic Dragon” and let the CD run. When an instrumental arrangement of a Beauty and the Beast song came on, a group of princesses gathered on the rug and danced as gracefully and slowly as the music they were listening to.

067 068

Our Wee Sprouts today are green pea pods. Breakfast was Kix and raisins. For lunch we served whole wheat penne pasta with ricotta cheese, mixed veggies and fruit salad (pineapple/apples). For snack, we will serve honey graham crackers and clementines.

Have a great day!

Good Afternoon!

We started our morning here at WWF by having our friends construct a marker and crayon mural where the kids could lay or sit on the floor and pick an area of the paper where they could color whatever they wanted. Some chose to make an object or just use different colors to make a design. Elizabeth chose to make a snowman using markers. She made precise circles and others followed by making their own snowman. Lea chose to take different colors to make a piece of art where the colors blended together. When Ozzie was finished with his drawing, he chose to go and get different shapes and make up a game with those shapes on top of his artwork! The finished product was astounding!

Music time started by Ms. Paulina playing the guitar! Ellie loved following the beat lead while playing the drums. Everyone played ‘go to sleep’ with the colored scarves. Children would cover up their friends so they could go night night. We even played peak-a-boo with them! P.K. loves getting wrapped up in the scarves and playing peak-a-boo with his friends. Lea gently covered up her friends Ozzie and Elizabeth so they could go to sleep.

WF Daily Explorations Friday 2/24

Happy Birthday, Nate!

023

After breakfast this morning, friends gathered ’round the art table to create a birthday card for Nate, who turns three tomorrow!

024 025 027

In the spirit of community building (and spreading simple Joy!!), a small group of friends learned, rehearsed and performed a Wee Friend’s original song “Jackhammer Joy” for the nice gentlemen who have been working on our street all week.

006

011 018

“What’s more fun than a rock? What’s more fun than a block? What’s more fun than 1-2-3?

Jackhammer Joy!

Jackhammer Joy! Jackhammer Joy, Jack-Jack Hammer Joy!” (repeat)

064 069

Back inside, Lisa guided an exploration with feathers and straws. Friends took turns sticking feathers into straws and then blowing them out. There were many observations: Umi: “The feathers feel soft. Pink is my favorite.” Ada: “I like blowing them!” Kai: “They feel soft and wiggly!” They observed how far or how near they flew. Alexandra shared “They are cuddly!”

040 056 060

At the workbench, Finn, Stephen and Nate set out rocks and were painting them with brushes. We invited them to bring their materials to two sensory bin, one filled with warm water and the other, warm sudsy water. They painted, dropped rocks back and forth between bins, and squeezed the paint brush bristles.

059

Elliott, Umi and Ada joined their friends in the exploration.

036 031 065

Melinda played several rounds of Crazy Eights and Simon and Ada took turns being the dealer in a few rounds of Zingo. Nate and Finn built a monster cave to protect themselves from a monster.

030 046 047

089

Annie and Jane organized and elaborate classroom, acting out the role of teacher. Later, Macy joined in as the baby sister. There was a lot of talking on the cell phones.

071 072

We created music, first by practicing rhythm stick/drumming dynamics. We beat slowly/quickly-softly/medium/loudly and then moved our sticks to Hap Palmer’s “Tap Your Sticks”. Then, we scrubbed our body parts with sponge balls while dancing to David Chicken’s “Bubbles in the Bathtub”. We ended our creative music time by snuggling near something we love and listening to Donny Osmond’s “Puppy Love”.

075

078 084 088

Our Wee Sprouts today are carrots and grape tomatoes. Breakfast was Kashi cereal and pear slices. For lunch, Lisa made a delicious scrambled egg casserole, corn and bananas. For snack, we will serve oranges, crackers and chocolate coins in honor of Nate’s Big #3!!!!

029

Have a peaceful weekend.

WWF, 2-23-2012

Good Afternoon!

While some of our friends are home battling different illnesses (hope everyone feels better soon!), our friends here at WWF today participated in different activities throughout the day. We started our day by working with a clock with felt mice that Ms. Paulina whipped up! While working with the mice, we sang Hickory Dickory Dock and used the mice as props throughout the song. Ellie pointed out different numbers that she recognized as the mouse went around the clock!

011

014

017

016

After working with the clock, we had quiet reading time where children relaxed and picked out books that they would like to read or have read to them. Our friends got comfy and were able to listen to stories. Sloane wanted to read ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ while Jada requested ‘Walking Through the Jungle’. Lea had a fantastic time stretching out on the floor reading books to herself. Elizabeth worked in the kitchen setting the table and feeding the play babies. She made sure to fill each bowl with a different kind of food. Aiden had a great time laying on the floor and watching the action all around him.

005

023

Ozzie and Sloane showed initiative by going into the kitchen to manipulate different activities at the kitchen table. Sloane chose to work with letter and number puzzles while Ozzie worked with shape boxes. He was using his fine motor skills by opening and closing the boxes and trying to see if they fit with each other.

018

020

007

For breakfast, our friends enjoyed kix with milk. AM snack consisted of fresh cucumbers and carrot slices. Lunch was pizza sandwiches on whole wheat tortillas, roasted green beans, and bananas. Blueberry muffins were served this afternoon for a snack.

Hope everyone has a great evening!

WWF Daily Explorations, 2.22.12

Good Afternoon!!

While some of our Wee Wee’s and teachers have been out this week fighting a cough virus, the rest of us are keeping busy at the Wee Wee House!

Eleanor began her day by exploring letters. This morning she had a chance to explore the moveable alphabet. As you can see here, she was delighted by the fact that there were so many of the same letters for her to make patterns and explore.

015

After that we hid some fruits in a bag a played a “guess the fruit” game. The children were especially interested in understanding the difference between pears and apples. Some friends talked about the smell of the different fruits. When it was the teachers’ turn to take a fruit out of the bag, they described shapes and colors of the fruits, some children were able to guess the fruit before it came out of the bag.

021

024

017

028

Following Jada’s interest, we sat at the kitchen table to peel, cut (using baby knifes) and eat the fruits we are studying. PK and Clara were given two little pieces of unpeeled banana. They explored the bananas and tried sticking their fingers inside it and peeled it.

029 032

Eleanor requested pouring water and squeezing songes at the sink and some of her friends decided to join her.

035

Unfortunatelly, because of the snow, we did not make it outside today. However!!! as our friends were in the mood for music, we danced and played our instruments to the “Hello”, “Pio, Pio” (as Olivia calls it) and “Aram Sam Sam” songs. We also played the drums while teachers modeled the same rhythmic pattern throughout different three songs (at least 2 friends were able to join playing and sustaining the pattern throughout the songs). Two of the songs were “Listen, Listen” and “Bright eyes” (a native american song).

You can find some of our songs in the song section of our blog. For some of them you are able to click on the tittle and listen or watch a short video of it. We are working on putting more songs for you to revisit the at home with your chilren.

038

048

Our morning snack was fruits (bananas, apples and oranges). Lunch consisted of Beans and ham soup with corn bread and apples. Our afternoon snack was raisins and crackers.

Have a wonderful day.

Paulina.

WF Daily Explorations Wednesday 2/22

This morning we delved into a project that was the “project that keeps giving”! First, the teachers cut out pictures of people, places and things for friends to create a collage and and inspire great conversation! We taped down paper, set out glue and a first group of friends sat down to work.

011

When they had squeezed the glue and stuck pictures to their heart’s delight, they asked to cut some more. We pulled out our magazine basket and got out the scissors.

018

015 016 025

026

Alexandra cut large and small triangles. Macy cut out a poodle and recognized the exact same picture of that dog on another page. Finn, Elliott and Marta worked with two different types of scissors, exploring how their fingers fit in and different angles to cut paper. Everyone, particularly our younger Wee Friends LOVE to squeeze things. The glue bottles were squeezed and squeezed and those finger muscles were getting a workout. The pictures of pets, flowers, mom and dads, children, food….all invoked descriptive words/observations and personal connections.

041

And then we turned the collage into a floor mat with contact paper. Friends pointed out which picture they had worked on. The slippery, slidey feel of the mat invited them to roll around and dance.

047 050 054

051

But no matter how much multi-faceted fun we had with our collage work, it was no match for the excitement of……

058

…the jackhammer.

063

064 065 066

069 072 073

And we leave you with that.

Our Wee Sprouts today are carrots. Breakfast was Cream of Wheat and pear slices. For lunch Tami made her fabulous three bean/veggie/ham soup with warm cornbread and apple slices.

024 002 007
