WWF Daily Explorations, 7.22.11

It has been a very quiet day at WWF! With so many vacationers, and a little one home sick, it has given us a lot of time to work with the children individually! This morning we spent a great deal of time reading books, playing with our new road puzzle, which Finn turned into train tracks, playing firemen, and some songs.

For lunch we had hummus on whole wheat bagels, corn, and blueberries. Thanks to Miss Paulina for making some homemade hummus. Mmmmm…it was a real treat!

Sloane is our official “blueberry champion,” as she consistently signs for more! We have also been learning to say, “leche” for milk, and continue to work on signing please, and thank you.

We hope everyone has a great weekend, and though we hate to complain about summer, we are hoping it will be a tad bit cooler this next week to enjoy the great outdoors.

Our life sized shoe has been the highlight today! Friends have filled it with pillows, dishes, books and blankets.

For the last several afternoons, friends have been constructing a cardboard house with various materials. This experience culminated with a discussion yesterday about different types of houses (including our own) . We explored National Geographic photographs of different houses around the world.

013

To exercise fine motor muscles and hand/eye coordination we’ve been threading with yarn and cardboard.

026

What began as a threading exploration grew into a collage creation and then feather duster art connecting feathers to straws!

Simon shared his family collage with us! We learned about his family, special friends and also where they lived! He also shared pictures of himself as a baby!

We celebrated Simon and Oliver by singing and dancing to “We Are Family” (the Sister Sledge arrangement!)

051

We ended our creative music time with a ZigZag Meditation where friends created a zigzag formation with their bodies by laying heads on tummies!

For lunch we served refried rice with chicken and veggies, snap peas and applesauce. This afternoon we are indulging in a rare (but exciting!) movie fest with a popcorn snack!

Have a terrific weekend!

What a great day!

Yesterday afternoon, Miss Paulina made some sushi for us out of felt. She also invited the children roll their own, which was a lot of fun. We had another sushi party this morning with Finn’s dad joining us! We talked about all of the different types of sushi, the ingredients and we are planning on learning how to use chopsticks.

After that everyone joined in for our firetruck song and dance. We are using plastic rings that invite children to move according to the song’s words and to create their own as well.

Miss Laurie brought us a nest today since she had read in our blog about Finn’s “flower nest” observation a few days ago. The nest even had a little egg in it! We touched it, feeling for different textures, and about how it was made. Miss Lisa read a book about Robins to expand on this theme. Miss Paulina also played and taught us a song about birds in Spanish with her guitar. We then moved on to listening to some soft music as we read books.

Right before lunch we played with our trains. We had a lot of parallel and cooperative playing going on, it was great! For lunch today we ate tuna salad on whole wheat bread with lettuce, corn, and cantaloupe. It was delicious!

Miss Marty is home sick today, we wish her a speedy recovery.

Due once again to the heat index, we will remain indoors this afternoon.

until.. it turned into a big tree for our family tree project!

Remember to bring in your child’s leaf to add to our tree!

This morning, as I (Tami) walked through the Wee Wee classroom with the paint rollers that I had dug up from their basement, Emergent Curriculum (and a silly grin) were the only two words I needed to say to explain everything.

From Wikipedia, Emergent curriculum is a way of planning curriculum based on the student’s interest and passions as well as the teacher’s. To plan an emergent curriculum requires observation, documentation, creative brainstorming, flexibility and patience. Rather than starting with a lesson plan which requires a “hook” to get the children interested, emergent curriculum starts with the children’s interests.

This morning, emerging from our Family Study, the teachers facilitated activities that allowed the children to follow their interests in the Old Lady and the Shoe fable by

  • singing
  • acting it out in costume
  • converting their own shoes in to houses in the art room
  • by creating a life sized shoe for dramatic play

For lunch today we had whole wheat tortillas with peanut butter, cantaloupe with blueberries and fresh zucchini from our garden. The kids at the round table all enjoyed the Lazy Susan that Miss Laurie brought in to help with passing of the bowls!

WF Daily Explorations, Wednesday 7-20-11

Today was another steamy morning! Instead of braving the heat today, we found many different ways to stay busy inside.

033

017

For an art exploration today, the kids used colorful circle screens to make eye catching glue collages. Some kids talked about their circle “families” and others created their pictures to be beautiful summer flowers. The younger children had a great time using the glue with the paint brushes and experimenting with the sticky properties of glue and how their hands stuck together.

Melinda led the group in a music/movement activity along to a CD (Lead Belly) that the Oliver and Simon brought to share. The music had very southern country/ folk style and the kids had to figure out how to move to this different style of music! Later, we had another music time that focused on using instruments. This time was started as an energetic spirited music time and ended in music meditation on individual rugs.

040

047

Storytime was found multiple times today in different rooms with different groups of children. One particularly fun moment for Taylor was during her BOB book reading time, she managed to gather a whole group of younger kids as an audience!

For lunch today we had chicken and rice with broccoli (prepared for us by Marty’s daughter Breania!), fresh mangos and banana, fresh sweet pea pods.

WWF Daily Explorations, 7.20.11

Our WWF’s had a make believe Sushi and raisin party yesterday afternoon. This turned into a very elaborate event! Finn and Umi began with something very simple that everyone joined in and elaborated on. What better way to spend an afternoon? Today Sloane and Sydney made breakfast and tea for Miss Lisa.
These two gals definetely have a future in waitressing! Finn requested his favorite song, “BINGO.” Elizabeth and Marta had a great time jumping from our jungle gym. We incorporated some counting not only in English, but Spanish as well.

It is time to give a special thank you to Marty’s daughter, Bree for helping us out in the afternoons. Lets just say that the “apple does not fall from the tree.” she has been a real asset to us, and has done a tremendous job!
As she has a strong interest in the Culinary Arts, she has done a wonderful job sharing her talents with us. Please join us in thanking her for sharing her wonderful gifts and talents with us.
As I am sure you know by now, Alma has graduated to WF’s. Though we are happy for her, we will not only miss her, but her wonderful mom and dad as well. We wish Alma all the best, as she has been with us since we opened.
Due to the heat index, we will be staying inside today. To make specially fun, today Marty fixed a very yummy fruit salad that we will be eating at snack time.

Everyone keep cool and enjoy the day!

Regards, Lisa, Marty, and Paulina

Another day of heat humidity!

We went outside earlier today to enjoy the sprinkler and bike riding! We played stop and go on our bikes. Finn used his wonderful imagination and spotted a nest which was a flower. We talked about what kind of bird might live in it. Miss Paulina pointed out our beautiful lilacs.

Some children did dot painting, while others did our number pegs and matching boards.

For lunch today we had garden fresh green beans with ham, potatoes and onions, cottage cheese, and pineapple. We then had story time.

We are still experiencing a hectic pick ups at the end of the day. We ask that if you have a question about a particular situation, it would be best to contact one of us after hours, as we are finding it difficult to indulge in extensive conversations at this time. As we are here to make your child’s learning experience a positive one, please do not hesitate to contact via email or phone in the evening.
Please do not take offense if we remind you of this at pick up. Be sure to check your daily sheets for infant feeding times, etc.

Keep cool and enjoy the sunshine!

“Bucket!!”

MG 0633

Several weeks ago, Nate and Owen (thanks, too, Aimee and Kevin!) brought Have You Filled Your Bucket Today? to Wee Friends! This “Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids” led us to a conversation about the ways we can treat others (and fill their buckets!) with kindness. After reading the story, each friend received a bucket with their name on it and then made a kindness deposit into a friend’s bucket. We decided whenever we saw these kindnesses occur, we would shout “bucket!” The buckets are hung in the art room so friends can make regular deposits.

Some older Wee Friends sorted and patterned old thread spools. A few younger friends created families of spools, identifying mother, father, baby etc….

Our Family Study is well underway and we would like to invite you to create a family collage with your child!
Today or tomorrow you will find a piece of construction paper in your child’s cubby upon which you can glue pictures of your family that your Wee Friend would like to share with his/her classmates. Some ideas to ignite your imaginations are: pictures of your house, beloved pets, favorite dollies, vacations, food-anything that says “this is me!”. Create them at your leisure over the next couple weeks and when you are ready, your child can bring them to school and share them!

DON’T FORGET TO BRING A SWIMSUIT FOR YOUR CHILD!

MG 0634 For lunch today we served whole wheat pasta with carrots, blueberries and yogurt/cinnamon dressing, corn and string cheese.

WWF Daily Explorations, 7.18.11

Happy Monday to all!

This morning Miss Lisa read, “I’m a little teapot.” After reading it, we acted out the book, then had a pretend tea party. Some of our girls even wore party dresses for this event. We then sang one of our favorites, “We all sing with the same voice,”” and danced to the CD.
After major sunscreen applications, it was time to turn on the beachball sprinkler. Today we incorporated learning colors while doing this. We also acted like flowers, growing as we got wet. This is helping to learn how our harvest grows. Sydney and Sloane watered our flowers today. Some children worked with letter puzzles and tempera painting while inside. Miss Marty offered pony tails to the children who wanted to get their hair done today. Little babies were kept inside this morning due to the excessive heat.

For lunch we had whole wheat pasta and fruit salad. Yes, you read that correctly! The kids loved it. We also had yogurt and corn.

Make it a great day! Regards, Lisa, Paulina, Marty and Amy
