Good Afternoon!

This morning for our PREK1 sign in, children came up to the board where they were asked to identify the coin worth 25 cents, just like the book we read yesterday in group. Children wrote their name under the quarter and a few friends even went as far to identify the other coin, a penny, that is worth one cent!

Social Studies: K.4.1 Explain that people work to earn money to buy the things they want. Introduce money names and values.

We had a busy day with so many child driven ideas for experiments!  While sitting in the sandbox yesterday, an older friend came up with the idea to use the cornstarch and water mixture, but to try adding sand to see what would happen.  He hypothesized that the sand would make the mixture more “stiff”.  He, and other interested kids, tried mixing different amounts of each ingredient to see how the mixture was affected.

IMG_5903IMG_5941IMG_6640IMG_6653IMG_6656

Since we had sand in the classroom, we also decided to add it to the art center.  Kids tried mixing the sand into paint to see how it would change their paintings.

IMG_5919IMG_6666

Another friend asked to try using the paint/salt mixture to make paintings at the art center.  After talking a bit, we decided it might be interesting to try different papers.  We tried water color paper, card stock and printer paper to see if the paper affected the outcome of the paintings.

Back in habitrail, a group of children participated in some ‘rough and tumble’ play. We always allow “wrestling” to happen in habitrail as long as there is a teacher present. We also go through rules that we have when engaging in this kind of play such as listening to friends words when they say “stop”. This type of play is important not only for gross motor development but understanding and exploring play that is safe and unsafe. Even though this group was made up of some of our youngest peers in the class, they were able to toe the line and make sure they stayed safe as well as their friends. By the end, friends were out of breath and needed a little breather by just laying on the floor and taking a break Smile. We always try to allow our environment to be a space where we say “yes”, especially when it’s what children”’s bodies need!

Happy Wednesday!

This morning several friends engaged with the blocks of the shapes houses.  Rose tapped her shapes together, another friend worked at finding their shape’s place in the roof and Diana was taking the roof off and handing it to Miss Bekah to put onto the house several times.

We also engaged with stacking BounceBlocks to climb up on to hold onto the habi-trail bars.

Good Afternoon!

We continued talking about money for our sign in activity as well as our group time. For PREK1 sign in, we talked about two terms we use when dealing with money: cheap and expensive. We had talked about those words yesterday in group during our book and today, children defined the word ‘expensive’.

Later on in group, we read ‘Froggy’s Lemonade Stand’ where we talked about selling goods and earning money for those goods that were sold.

Froggy tried selling his lemonade for twenty five cents which children were able to identify as the worth of a quarter! Unfortunately, Froggy drank all of his profits before getting any customers so he was unable to make any  money!

Social Studies: K.4.1 Explain that people work to earn money to buy the things they want. Introduce money names and values.

This morning, several kids discovered that our classroom tadpoles had grown back legs.  We looked at our development model for frogs, and found the tadpole at its first stage of leg development.  It looked just like ours.

IMG_6501IMG_6550

We offered a “lemonade stand” activity this morning at the round table.  Kids could use coins like quarters, dimes and nickels, to buy and sell lemonade to one another.

IMG_6535IMG_6513IMG_6528

Another project popped up in the art center yesterday afternoon.  Kids began exploring ways to use straws as building materials.  A couple of friends realized they could make shapes like triangles and trapezoids.  One friends said “Hey, maybe this could be a kite”.  After that, several kids decided to make kites.  We tested our designs outside.  This was a great example of a child lead project that came of kids independently exploring materials with curiosity.   This leads to creative thinking, problem-solving and deep learning.

PREK2:  We have been spending more time outside with the weather being so beautiful.  In group today we read the story “In”.  It talked about inside and outside.  At the end of the story, we made a class list of things we enjoy doing indoors and outdoors.

Good Afternoon!

**Starting today, Miss Tina will be joining us on Monday and Tuesdays for the majority of the summer as a few teachers will take turns having some time off. Miss Tina knows most of our kiddos from her time at Wee Wee over the last few years! We are excited to have her back for the summer!

This morning, we kicked off our week by starting to talk about money, values, and how and what we spend our money on! For PREK1 sign in, we specifically looked at the penny and added up how many pennies were on the board.

In group, we read ‘Those Shoes’ which is a book about buying goods and deciphering between wants and needs. We also talked about what ‘thrift shops’ are since the main character was searching the local thrift shops for shoes that were his size and at a price that he could afford.

Social Studies: K.4.1 Explain that people work to earn money to buy the things they want. Introduce money names and values.

IMG_6395IMG_6403IMG_6408

Older friends have been talking about the value of money in group.  We took the opportunity to expand on this and offer a way for kids to explore these ideas through play.  Kids enjoyed the “flower shop cooperative play” activity where they could buy flowers or sell them to costumers.  During their play, teachers were able to share the values of different coins and how to add up numbers for the total price.  Kids were also interested in looking at numbers on bills.  They found 1’s, 5’s, 10’s and 20’s.

Happy Friday!

We had a sensory exploration morning with a “Glass noodle sensory activity”.  These noodles have a particularly interesting texture.  The kids described them as “squishy, cold, slippery and slimy”.  One friend asked if we could try coloring the noodles.  We added water color paint to see what would happen.  The kids were excited to find that the noodles were able to absorb the paint and turn vibrantly pink, orange and blue!

Good Afternoon!

We had a jammed packed visit to Prairie Winds Farm this morning! We helped by sweeping the barn, shoveling manure, feeding animals like bunnies, a horse (Shelby who is 27 years old!), and chickens. We were able to hold three day old turkeys and headed to the garden before we left. There were strawberries that were ripe and we each got to pick one to eat! We also picked some spinach and parsley—we loved the spinach but didn’t care for the straight parsley Smile.

It was the perfect mix of fun and productive!
