It began yesterday with winding yard around wooden spools. Because of the interest it held, we offered it again this morning.
The interest in spools became of study of cylinders. We tooled around the basement and found other cylinder shaped materials to work and wind with.
Then Finn around with the ultimate cylinder: A Dr. Suess hat.
And so our Friday morning cylinder work continued“
So what is the Point of Cylinder Work?
- Visual discrimination of size and texture (math) and extreme focus on an object (readiness to read)
- Shape recognition
- Eye/hand coordination
- The materials we set out encouraged active involvement as opposed to passive looking
- Thinking outside the cylinder: “Look at my puppy!”, “Look at my yo-yo!” “Can I use the cylinders to make my tail?”
“These learning materials are designed to promote learning through the senses and to train the senses for learning.”
-Maria Montessori
