Happy Monday!
I opened our Wee Friends email this morning and this gem of an article was waiting for us (thank you, Mandy!). I never tell parents to read an article; HOWEVER, I highly recommend this specific article. It aligns perfectly with what we believe in as far as the development of these children and what we expect from them.
“But more important, here’s what parents need to know. That every child learns to walk, talk, read, and do algebra at their own pace and that it will have no bearing on how well they walk, talk, read, or do algebra.”
There are several reasons why I love this article. It speaks to the developmentally appropriate aspect of preschool. Reading, writing, and mathematical skills are important, yes. But at what cost? At the cost of “knowing they are loved wholly and unconditionally, all the time” or “knowing how to laugh, act silly, be goofy and use their imagination”? Reading, writing, and math will come. Every child learns at a difference pace and in a different way. A suggestion the author gives: “Count up to 60 when you’re mixing a cake and he’ll pick up his numbers. Get fun books from the library about space or the alphabet. Experiment with everything from backyard snow to celery stalks in food coloring. It’ll all happen naturally, with much more fun and much less pressure.”

K/PREK1 read ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ from our library collection! I picked out six words from the story and we eventually ended up changing a letter/few letters in each word to create a new word! We talked about the different sounds that were added and our older friends helped me say each new word.
K.RF.3.5: Add, delete, or substitute sounds to change words.
PREK2 used turkey manipulatives to help complete the equation ‘7+___=10”. Together, children came to the conclusion that ‘3’ completes the equation. Each friend got a chance to write their name under the correct answer.
A look into the rest of our day!
