Good Afternoon!

We happened to have one of those authentically child driven projects pop up today. It was one that makes emergent curriculum shine as a way of integrating learning seamlessly into interests and play. The kids were exploring a treasure trove of natural objects this morning. After some time with all of it, a couple of friends headed for the art center. I suggested that if they were interested they could draw some of the objects they found. This turned into the kids designing museum posters they said they wanted to hang in the classroom. I asked if they would like to “curate” a museum exhibit to go along with their posters. They were intrigued and got right to work. The kids began making labels and signs for their exhibits. They practiced kid spelling without really being aware that they were working on a language arts lesson. Some friends wrote what the objects were on the labels, like “pinecones”. Others wrote words describing the objects they were showing like “pokey”, “wiggly”, or “spiky”. All of it lead to deep learning experiences. At the end, Ryan and Paige dressed up as tourists to visit the museums and take pictures. When they visited Katherine’s museum, she introduced them to her exhibit saying “these shells were collected from all over the world!”.

The rest of our revolved around sensory activities, specifically water! Inside, we explored a new water table activity using pink colored water and pouring/measuring materials.

Outdoors, we filled up the water table along with the blue tuff tray to offer ample water opportunities to help combat the heat! A few friends offered to help select toys for each water space which was so helpful!
