Good morning!
Our PREK1 friends came to the sign in board where we identified the third text genre of the week: nonfiction! Children looked at two fall books: ‘Colorful Leaves’ and ‘Amazing Apples’. They signed their name under ‘nonfiction’. Later, we read both of the books during group. We were amazed to learn that there are more than 7.000 kinds of apples! Several friends were eager to share that they’ve already been apple picking and one friend even shared that she got special donuts when her family went to pick apples! Fall is the best time!
We’ve been tackling the four main text genres this week and we’ve loved hearing children use these text genres in conversation. Hannah came in this morning and shared that she had already read one fiction and one nonfiction book this morning! She shared a few reasons as to why the fiction book she read was indeed fiction!
K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).
This morning we offered a sorting activity. Each tray had a variety of examples of triangles, circles, squares or rectangles. Kids tried sorting all of the like-objects. Next, we offered for kids to use all of the objects and sort by shape or color. Here are some examples of how the kids sorted their shapes.
After the initial activity, we put the objects in the middle for kids to sort and think creatively with. Hannah created an interesting mosaic, making two’s pattern of like-shapes that she stacked. Arthur noticed the numbers on the tiles that were also offered. He began to count how many of each like-object he had sorted and then laid the corresponding number next to each collection. In case you are wondering, the 8 went with the triangles, not the three. He got all of them lined up correctly!
