Good Afternoon!
Throughout the week, we’ll be talking about maps and globes in our PREK1 group. Today for their sign in activity, we talked about cities and specifically the city where they live!
We continued this conversation into group time where we read a few pages from the book ‘Here and There’ which highlights different parts of the country and how they do things differently. For example, today we learned that kids as young as six years old travel by train by themselves to get to school! In other parts of the world, children have to walk or hike for several hours to get to class. We got on the topic of underground trains and subways and there was quite a lot of interest surrounding this. For some, it was hard to envision as one child asked, “How are they underground on a train when there’s animals that live underground?!”
Social Studies: K.3.2 Identify maps and globes as ways of representing Earth and understand differences between a map/globe.
This morning we explored the way light moves through different objects and how it behaves on reflective surfaces. Many of the kids enjoyed trying the light with different colored pieces in front of it, changing the color the light made. Some liked the way the light reflected the prism pieces onto the mirror. Other kids enjoyed getting creative with the pieces and making beautiful mosaics. We love all the variety of ideas that come from open ended exploration!
