Happy Friday!
This morning we offered a unifix cube activity. A group of friends worked together to make a line as long as they could. Afterwards, we used tape measures to find out how long the line of cubes was. Hannah asked to add a pattern component to the project. She wanted to make a pattern that used all of the colors. She was able to create a nine color pattern and helped friends repeat the process in a long line of cubes. As friends took turns, a conflict about the order friends would work in arose. We problem solved the situation coming up with a written list of names that the group could refer to any time they got confused. We love to work on problem solving and conflict resolution naturally whenever possible. We try to help create solutions that kids can carry out on their own. This situation was a good example of that process.
Another friend was interested in making paper chains at the art center. We cut out materials for this project and several kids wanted to try it. We realized that chains were another item we could measure. Friends enjoyed making a chain and then using a tape measure to see how long it was.
