Good afternoon!
This morning we offered a building activity at the round table. The kids could choose from a variety of “loose parts” materials (which simply means materials that have no clear use). Loose parts encourage a wide range if possible solutions as kids tinker with them. Kids made some very complex structures which they communicated in detail. We had “houses, castles, burning pits for camp fires, squirrel feeders, gardens, mailboxes, fences, dinning tables fully set and balance beams for animal parks”. Just listening to the variety of imaginative solutions reveals the open-ended nature of the activity, which would never happen if the activity had been directed. These kinds of activities are designed to push kids to use their own higher thinking skills, like executive planning and creative problem solving. As they play, kids are learning about balance, stability, trial & error, geometry and symmetry, all foundational components of mathematical and scientific thinking.
We hope you enjoy a few more pictures from our day!
