WF and WWF 6-27-16 Saving Boxes for CARE

Good afternoon!  I wanted to use the blog today to request donations to benefit the animals at South Bend Animal Care and Control (SBACC).  As many of you know, I am the volunteer photographer for our the South Bend shelter.  My daughter Kaitlyn and I spend several hours every week exercising, training, and taking adoption photos.  Kaitlyn and I are officially members of the volunteer group CARE (Community Animal Rescue Effort) http://www.careofsouthbend.org/.  CARE serves SBACC in many valuable ways by providing daily enrichment and exercise to the animals, finding and transporting animals to rescue organizations, working weekly adoption events at the Erskine Petsmart, and raising funds to pay for veterinary care of animals with injuries or illnesses that would otherwise be euthanized.  This is a wonderful group of people passionate to help our city animals.  (And we are always looking for more volunteers!)

Donation Request #1:

As a way to enrich the kennel experience of the dogs, we are building “busy boxes” as an extremely low cost way to give them intellectual stimulation.  This means we need:

  • cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes (up to 18”x18”) We’d love all of your cereal, cracker, butter, soda, deodorant, and all other smaller cardboard boxes!  You don’t need to break them down!
  • toilet paper and paper towel cardboards
  • We’d take any donations of Pupperoni, the best junk food for dogs to get them interested in and working through the busy boxes.

Donation Request #2:

CARE is holding a garage sale to raise funds in August.  We are collecting donations for this sale.  The money raised will go to the “Hope and Second Chances” emergency vet fund for the shelter animals.  The address of the garage sale and where to make donations is on the flier!

Donation Request #3

If you are an animal lover and would like to donate directly to the cause…http://www.careofsouthbend.org/donate-and-volunteer/#donate

You can like SBACC on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/South-Bend-Animal-Care-and-Control-SBACC-129957831131/

You can search through the photos of our adoptable animals at https://www.southbendin.gov/government/service/adoptable-pets.  If ever you are interested in any of our wonderful adoptable animals, please don’t hesitate to contact me!  I would happily talk to you about what I know about them and offer to join anyone at the shelter to meet animals.  We have marvelous families here at WF and I’d love to see any of our animals go home with a Wee Friender!

Have a great evening!  Tami

Happy Friday!

**Just a reminder, that Wee Friends is closed for summer vacation starting Thursday, June 30th and we’ll reopen Monday, July 11th.

The glue was used by several friends this morning! We worked on using a small dot of glue for our artwork.

After the art table fizzled out, our manicures began! Children had ten different colors to choose from. The most popular: a different color on every finger!

DSCN9127DSCN9135

After our nails dried, a runway was created in habitrail for friends to show off their nails AND their pajamas. We all loved having the spotlight on us Smile.

We took advantage of the shade on this absolutely lovely day. The sunglasses were in full effect!

DSCN9149DSCN9150

Our large group had our session outside on the bridge today! I took a book of poems, flipped through the pages and had each child pick a poem by sticking their finger on a certain page! We were excited to read OUR poem!

We really enjoyed our morning outdoors!

We played in the wet sand…

DSCN4718DSCN4729DSCN4740

And teeter tottered together…

DSCN4738DSCN4735

But the most exciting part was the bugs our older friends showed us! They collected a few worms and roly poly’s and Ruby and Sophia were fascinated. Sophia even picked up a worm to get a closer look! Ruby wasn’t as interested in touching them, but she spent a long time observing them wiggle around.

***Just a reminder that tomorrow is going to be PAJAMA DAY/NAIL DAY. Thanks!

Today was one of those days where children built on their experiences. One thing lead to another. First, we started out at the art table, like any other day.

DSCN9005

Owen decided to make policeman badges which lead to him making badges for a few of his peers.

DSCN9028DSCN9030

Clara decided she didn’t want to be a policewoman; she wanted to be a superhero. “I’m a superhero because I help people across the street and keep them safe.” Children took on their own identity, getting help and ideas from their friends.

A superhero’s costume according to Wee Friends:

Arm bands.

DSCN9039

Plus a cape.

And that famous pose!

DSCN9047DSCN9040

We dusted off our superhero powers and headed outside. Clara started her weekly yoga class. “This is the morning pose. Put your arms up and pretend you’re holding really heavy balls in your hands.”

Good Afternoon!

Friends continued to explore our new wooden pattern blocks this morning. Some children paired up and worked together to complete the patterns! Not only do activities like this increase our fine motor skills but the ability to problem solve grows!

DSCN0398DSCN0399

Before we jumped into our art experience, we discussed the holiday coming up which is the 4th of July.

The art table had a paint/sensory project going this morning where we used paint, paper, and a toilet paper roll to duplicate fireworks! We looked at a video of a ‘sparkler’ which many friends said they’ve used before!

DSCN0403DSCN0406

One friend asked why we were using red, blue, and white paint. While doing the project, we talked about the American flag and what colors are shown on the flag. A child playing over in housekeeping piped up and said, “Hey! I have one of those flags at home!”

DSCN0415DSCN0424

When we headed outside, a few children headed to the garden area where they helped weed the garden!

DSCN0451DSCN0456

In large group, we read a book that Addi brought in to share. After reading, “Dragons Love Tacos”, we discussed what our title would be. Everyone got a change to make up their own title, replacing the words ‘dragon’ and ‘taco’ with what they would choose!

DSCN0471

Breakfast– Chex and pears.

Lunch– Homemade egg salad on bagel/bread, oranges/banana, and cucumbers/carrots.

PM snack– Pickles and whole wheat crackers with cream cheese.

Wee Sprout– Cucumbers.

Have a terrific night!
