Good Afternoon!

Our morning focused around shapes!

It started with our sign in board where children were asked to identify the given shape.

Friends went to the table where a shape activity was ready to go! Using wooden blocks, kids paired the the wooden shape to the shape on the paper.

Shapes were prevalent throughout the morning in our activities that we participated in.

We noticed squares when the magnatiles were brought out.

Daniel and Clara built different creations with the trio blocks. They also incorporated the use of color into their activity.

A group of friends worked at the table to construct a design made with chips. They created a ‘chip town’. Within the town, they built a museum, hotel, playground, and a swimming pool.

The soft stars were Anna’s favorite today! She used the blue one as a chair and the green one as a car. She sat on it and said, “I’m driving!”

WF Monday 1/18/16

Today we have been warm and cozy inside Wee Friends! This morning there was lots of collaboration building a “house boat” with the trio blocks, while other friends created a house out of the wooden blocks.

Kindergarten: Today’s kindergarten activity was based upon K.RF.3.1: Identify and produce rhyming words—we played Rhyming Bingo! Every child received a unique bingo board. A teacher called out a word (like sing) and friends had to find the matching picture of a word that rhymed (like ring). Our kindergartners were very adept at figuring out the rhyming words!

DSCN0775DSCN0783DSCN0771

Of course, other friends were welcome to join in. Once they knew what the rhyming word was, friends eagerly looked for the picture on their bingo board. There was lots of working together throughout the game. We played two different variations: until someone gets BINGO and filling the entire board!

One of our math FABs this week is all about SHAPES! During large group today we talked about different 3D shapes such as a sphere, cylinder and cube. Friends matched everyday objects with their shape. This type of shape work will continue throughout the week.

Anna asked to play with the waffle blocks this afternoon and David and Emma joined her. Emma liked grabbing the blocks out of the basket one by one and making a big pile.

WF Friday 1/15/16 Countdown to Valentine’s Day

This morning started off with lots of group and individual play in the back half of the house! Several friends worked together to build an airplane complete with spacious seats and wooden armrests. The plastic animals and cars were popular options as well.

Today Valentine’s Day stickers and paper hearts were added to the art table supplies. Friends were immediately drawn to the stickers and began making all sorts of cards and decorations.

Kindergarten: Speaking of Valentine’s Day, the kindergartners sign-in task this morning was to figure out how many days there are until Valentine’s Day. Using a calendar, they had to figure out what day was today and when Valentine’s Day was. During this process, Elliott noticed that there were 7 days in a row on the calendar—equaling a week! He then set out to calculate how many days were in 4 weeks. Other friends were curious about this work and often stopped by to see what Elliott was up to.

While Elliott was figuring out what 7+7 was, there was an opportunity to talk about how to write numbers so everyone can easily understand them (7+7=14 versus 41=7+7). After a lot of problem solving and persistence Elliott came up with the correct answer, 29 days until Valentine’s Day!

Wee Sprouts: Cucumbers. Breakfast: Brown rice cakes with peanut butter and bananas. Lunch: Whole grain brown rice with chicken, carrots and fresh strawberries/oranges. Snack: Cottage cheese and pretzels.

Emma was excited to find our lion pillow in the cube. She carried it around the room with her while saying “cat!”

We brought the transparent stacking blocks down for our friends to enjoy. Their favorite thing to do with them is to hold them up to their face and view everything in a different color. David and Franklin thought it was very silly!

WF Thursday 1/14/16 Experimenting with Ice

Today started with a science exploration! Yesterday, we filled a bucket with water and placed it outside. Friends correctly hypothesized that it would turn into ice and were eager to touch the cold substance this morning.

First, the children cleared off the layer of snow on top of the ice. It was then that we discovered the water was not frozen all the way through!

DSCN0662DSCN0659

Friends then experimented with a variety of methods to melt their pieces of ice. They sprinkled salt on top, sprayed warm water onto the ice and touched the ice with their hands.

DSCN0676DSCN0677DSCN0675DSCN0666DSCN0682

Friends marveled at the crystals we saw! The addition of food coloring to our ice/water combination took this experiment to another level.

Kindergarten: Sometimes our lessons are based on what the kindergartners are currently engaged in. A teacher takes a few minutes to observe what is taking place and then thinks of several ways in which to extend friends’ learning even more.

For example, today Clara and Elizabeth were busy creating a Valentine’s Day banner to hang in the classroom. Both friends wanted to spell “Happy Valentine’s Day.” First they used kid’s spelling, hearing “hapy vlntins da”. Next, we compared that spelling to “teacher spelling”. Elizabeth pointed out that teacher spelling is important because “it helps moms and dads understand you better!” The two friends added in the missing letters and then added punctuation. A natural and engaging way to practice writing skills!

Wee Sprouts: Carrots. Breakfast: Kashi’s Blueberry Clusters and fresh blueberries. Lunch: Whole grain English muffins with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese, cucumbers/carrots and fresh oranges. Snack: Pumpkin seeds and wheat thins.
