WF Friday 11/13

Happy Friday! Today has been yet another great day in Wee World.

Max and Addi experimented with rolling cars down a handmade ramp.

008

Naia matched objects and letters, while Elizabeth and Clara counted all of the number matches they made.

012014

Other friends enjoyed using the tools and driving cars.

013017

We also had a special visitor today! Ms. Leslie, a preschool teacher from New Jersey and Jessica’s friend, came to read us a funny Thanksgiving story, ‘Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving.

051

The story was very engaging and friends listened intently to the tale of a school field trip to a turkey farm.

048049

We were very sad when we realized what the farmer was going to do to the turkeys. But the story does have a happy ending (ask your child what it was!) Ms. Leslie also brought our classroom a stuffed turkey that makes authentic turkey sounds.

053056

And to go along with the festive story, friends were also invited to create a turkey using a whole set of stickers. Thank you so much for visiting Ms. Leslie!

Today we also got some outside time. As the temperatures begin dropping, we ask that you please bring in a hat and pair of gloves for your child! It is more fun to play when you aren’t worried about cold ears or fingers.

WF Thursday 11/12

Although we had to stay inside on this cold and dreary day, the atmosphere inside of Wee Friends was warm and bright! Throughout the day friends were engaged in a variety of activities.

Friends gathered around the light table to sort jewels and objects by color, size and shape.

018022

More jewels were sorted and friends played a long game of house.

044021

Elliott used his morning time to stack the colored counters. He used every single counter in the box and discovered there were lots of red counters, but only a few purple ones.

030035

Other Wee Friends built unique creations with the wood and plastic blocks.

046048

We also had a dance party, complete with ribbon streamers!

054055

And yes, we already started listening to Christmas music. Friends’ request.

*Notice: We are required to have complete shot records that are under a year old for every child at WF. If you child has an upcoming doctor visit or physical, please ask for a copy of your child’s shot records so we can update our files. Thank you!

Today has been a wonderful day enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. Children spent time today in all areas of the house, from the reading area to habitrail and everything in between. We saw lots of friends enjoying books together:

While other friends collaborated in building block creations with MANY blocks:

We even had friends create a countdown to Thanksgiving! Clara spent the morning drawing a turkey out of her traced hand which we photocopied. Next, Clara and friends cut the turkeys out and put them on the wall. We figured out there are only 15 days until Thanksgiving!

Kindergarten: Today our kindergarten time was dedicated to handicrafts. While not typical kindergarten curriculum, learning skills like sewing and crocheting help kindergarteners practice hand-eye coordination and promote focus. Learning some of these skills is also challenging and requires friends to practice perseverance. Elizabeth chose to continue sewing her stocking, while Elliott learned how to use a crochet hook to chain for the first time. Cassie also joined in on the fun!

Wee Sprouts: Cucumbers. Breakfast: Hot wheat cereal and fresh oranges. Lunch: Farm fresh scrambled eggs with whole wheat bread, fresh snap peas and oranges/bananas. Snack: Whole wheat bagels with cream cheese.

WF Tuesday 11/10

*Announcement: While at lunch today several friends brought up the idea of having pajama day (“Why can’t we all come to school in pajamas?!”) So, on Wednesday, November 25th (the day before our Thanksgiving Break) we will have Pajama Day! If friends would like, they can come to school in their soft and cozy PJs. Woohoo!

Lately, many of our friends have shown an interest in wrestling, tumbling and other types of big body play. This type of physical play is normal, age-appropriate and different from fighting. In appropriate big body play children’s faces are relaxed and they are usually smiling/laughing, as this type of play is very enjoyable for children.

Big body play is important for children’s development in many ways, teaching children:

  • Physical skills—how their bodies move and how to control those movements
  • Language skills—communicating through signals and non-verbal communication
  • Social skills—turn taking, negotiating, making and following rules

Here at WF we have specifically designed the environment to provide a safe setting for children to play vigorously with their bodies. When children engage in big body play they know that they must check to make sure the area is safe and that a teacher is there to supervise. With a teacher there to help children learn to recognize non-verbal and verbal cues from each other, big body play is a safe and developmentally appropriate practice!

015016

For more information about this important style of play, there are several excellent articles on the subject on the bookshelf by the front door! Let us know if you have any questions.

Enjoy the sunshine! –Jessica
