WF Daily Explorations Wednesday 11/16

Each day WF teachers try to step back and take a few quiet moments to simply observe the children as they play and learn. It gives us a chance to assess what our friend’s are learning, absorbing and interested in. Here are some insights that we gathered today:

021 075 098

When Alexandra walked in this morning and heard the gentle music playing she asked Melinda “Can we have music meditation?” When Laurie arrived, she collected her green mat and positioned herself to meditate!

Simon likes to begin his day in the reading area with a book. You can always find him there gently easing into morning with a book.

We are just getting to know Elliott and his curiosity about his new environment and friends keeps him on the move. For the first time since he started, he chose to pedal his trike around our circle. He then moved to the big kids red bike and exclaimed “I’m a big boy!” At one point we heard him yell “Simon!” At today’s concert rehearsal, he sang, by heart, the first lyric to “Wee Friends, Wee Friends, Mighty Mighty Wee Friends..”!!

011 001 015

This morning as Nate ate breakfast, he looked at Elliott and expressed “haircut!”. His keen observation was apparent again as he sifted through our baby animals cards. He chose three cards (out of 30 or so): an orangutan, gorilla and monkey, laid them out next to one another, recognizing they are all a part of one family.

Stephen, daily, incorporates Batman into his play. He creates multiple structures that Batman might use. In imaginative dramatic play, Batman always makes an appearance.

At some point each day, Arleigh asks for music. Yesterday, at naptime, when an upbeat song played, we found her on her cot jamming out. Recently, she has asked for Malificent (from our Fairy Tale study) and our Ship at Storm track.

034 053 013

Alma is particularly interested in sharks. Like Stephen, she incorporates shark play into many improvisational moments. She has also enjoyed playing Malificent with Arleigh. Her first question each day is “Where is my best friend?”

Macy has been interested in acting out Grocery Store in housekeeping. For the last several days, as cashier, she has set up the cash register, gathered wooden coins and has sold stuffed animals to all her friends. She is a devoted lunch buddy to Elliott and today we saw her kiss him on the cheek as they waited together to wash their hands.

We have seen Jane act out the part of a teacher several times over the last few days. She has taught Annie her letters and led a group of kids in a sandbox activity. The calls all of her friends “Sweetie”.

051 100 046

Umi loves her brother Marat. Everyday she tells us that her brother is one of her best friends, Alma, of course, being the other.

Addi’s favorite moments are snuggling with teachers. As we are working and playing, we will find Addi very close, offering to help and just enjoying being close to us.

Knowing that Stephen loves hammers, Kai spent some time at the workbench making one for him. Each day we see Kai approaching friends as a positive role model and compassionate person.

Owen loves ships. All sorts, anywhere, anyhow! Because he was with us all morning, we had the opportunity to explore his interest in an educational, fun way! We discussed several different types of boats (canoes, sailboats, tugboats, warships to name a few). In hopscotch, Owen led us in a gross motor exploration of turning our bodies into the different ship’s shapes.

024

Each of our friends bring their own unique interests and learning styles to our environment. It makes for interesting, inspiring and very busy days!

For breakfast this morning we served oatmeal and bananas. Lunch was Tami’s delicious three bean soup, bananas and homemade biscuits. For snack we served cottage cheese and pineapple.

See you tomorrow at 4:30 for the WF Fall Concert. It runs about 5 minutes long. Have a great day.

WWF, Bunches of fun! 11-16-11

It has been a great morning here at WWF!  We started our morning with cereal and fresh fruit.  It was on to the main room for two monkey books, and one on fall as well.  We played our donut shop game, and  the children are sure great at identifying their colors.  Time to “monkey around” with some dancing after that!
Some of the children enjoyed a sensorial activity of playing with banana pudding on individual trays.  They learned about hot and cold, and textures.    Our felt board on our monkey theme has expanded, we have added a bed to coincide with our “Five Little Monkeys” book.  The ideas kept expanding on making a bed for them, feeding them, sinnging to them, and even adding a crocodile to it!  “Snap” goes the crocodile.
We had some great outdoor exploration time this morning.  Lots of dump and fill, using our slides, and riding our bikes.
“Listen, listen, all around, someone special has a drum.”  The children enjoyed some music time and had a lot of fun with them.
Our lunch today was some delicious ham and bean soup, hot rolls, and fresh fruit.
Please be sure to label ALL of your children’s personal clothing items.  Please be sure to review your parent handbook in regard to a snow delay or closing in the event of inclement weather.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask one of us.
This afternoon we will be an audience next door at WF for their Thanksgiving concert!

Give thanks!

WF Daily Explorations Tuesday 11/15

On swimming days, when the kids enter the pool area, they divide into two groups: Kai, Annie and Simon and Macy, Jane, Addi, Ada, Alma, Arleigh and Umi. Kai’s group always starts by jumping off the board at the deep end. Today they swam 1/2 way down the lane and back again. They also got to use flippers! Macy’s group worked a lot with noodles today. They practiced the back stroke by leaning against the instructor’s shoulder and lifting their tummies high, above the water line.

Back at WF, Melinda rehearsed for the concert. She played the songs on the accordian and piano as friends sang along. She also gave each friend a chance to play the accordian!

We hope you’ll take a chance to look over our sign in sheet (in the green binder on the puppet theatre) and your child’s journal binder (located in black named binders under the art loft). These early literacy experiences are not only great pre-reading/writing practice but also a sense of terrific pride in each of our Wee Friends. We sign in at the start of the day and journal right after snack. At both times of day, WF approach the opportunity to write and draw with great enthusiasm.

Other than a few coughs and runny noses, we think we have made it past this first round of colds and illnesses. Everyone is generally healthy with no illness absences in the past week.

For breakfast today we served cheerios and raisins. Lunch was whole wheat tortillas with peanut butter, clementines and carrots. For snack we will serve rice cakes and apples.

WWF, Going bananas for monkeys! 11-15-11

The children are settling into a great morning routine. We started our morning with two of our favorite monkey books, went to the donut shop, and learned a new finger song about monkeys swinging in a tree. Then on to the kitchen for painting with bananas. This was a great sensorial activity as well. The children really seem to enjoy it. Our monkeys and bananas on our felt board had a lot of “appeal” today.

007

010

We also made some banana muffins. The children helped to count and scoop ingredients, to mix, and of course do a “taste test” with the batter. They also experienced dumping and feeling the texture of the different ingredients. This was “bunches” of fun! We will serve them as our afternoon snack.

011

015

Before lunch we enjoyed some music with the guitar. Maracas, bells, and shakers were all part of our music time today.

For breakfast this morning, we had cinnamon toast, and of course, bananas. For our mid-morning snack, we had cheese, raisins and apple slices. Our lunch today was tortillas with cheese, carrots, and oranges.

Enjoy the beautiful fall day!

WWF, WWF has “appeal,” Monkey appeal that is! 11-14-11

No monkeying around with this group! We started our day with the donut shop game, then read two books about monkeys. We then moved into our “Five Little Monkeys” song and CD. The children are doing great with the motions to this song.

001

003

022

It was time to give our animals a bath. Miss Tami purchased some little tubs so the kids do their water play individually. Rub a dub, dub, our animals are sparkling!

006

016

Some of our friends used our felt board and learned our alphabet while placing the different colored letters on our felt board. Eleanor was brilliant with identifying her letters! This was some great one on one time, and enjoyable to work with the children on a one on one basis.

011

We were able to have some outside time before the rain. Riding bikes and playing in our log cabin house were favorites today. We enjoyed some fresh cut apples outside.

We had some extra inside time before lunch, so we read, “Frosty the Snowman,” and then listened to the CD. It was only fitting that we brought out our bells and maracas to add to the fun.

Our lunch today were alfredo noodles, peas and carrots, and fresh fruit salad. Our afternoon snacks consisted of cottage cheese and pretzels.

Please note that we are closed on Thanksgiving Day, and that Friday as well.

Enjoy the day!

WF Daily Explorations Monday 11/14

Over the weekend, Tami turned our sensory bin into a light table. The top lid is white and the bin itself, she painted metallic silver. She added three small fluorescent lights inside the bin. Throughout the morning, friends took turns creating structures with the translucent Magna-Tiles.

053 056 002

Our older friends were the first group to hop aboard the gymnastics bus. Today both groups worked on the cheese mat and resi-rocker. They did forward rolls, backward rolls and straddle rolls. On the resi-rocker, they did cartwheels over the top of the mat. Ask your gymnast about

the rocket ship they ended class with!

While the big kids were on the bus, our toddler friends played a path game in which they rolled the die and moved spaces 1-6. We drew dots on the game, in the same configuration as a die and they matched their roll accordingly.

014 008

In preparation for our Thursday Fall Concert (Nov. 17th, 4:30pm), we created crowns out of orange construction paper, glue and sparkles. Older friends used scissors to create zig-zag triangular borders while younger friends used the scissors to practice cutting. Nate identified circular and star shaped sparkles.

We did get outside this morning for about 15 minutes, but came in when it started to rain. We read books, explored how our bodies and voices turn into turkeys in an imaginative musical improv. We rehearsed our concert songs and brainstormed different foods to prepare for our Wee Friends Thanksgiving lunch next week. Pizza, ice cream and spaghetti were among the favorites!

Melinda led a message board exploration on “What kind of game should we make in hopscotch?” Our plan is to convert hopscotch into a life-sized game board.

For lunch we served whole wheat pasta with cheesy white sauce and peas, banana/orange fruit salad and carrots/peas.

010

Have a terrific day.

Next Thursday, Nov. 17th at 4:30 Wee Friends will sing several of the songs we have been working on all year-and a couple new ones! Melinda taught us the Chicken Dance!

Each time we rehearse, we instruct the children “If you are a taller friend stand on the back row. If you are a smaller friend, stand on the front row.” With our guidance, and the help of each other, friends organize themselves accordingly. Today we determined that our smaller friends would be more comfortable sitting down. After we are all assembled, we sing through our songs. The two main points we work on are 1) singing in a natural inside voice and 2) singing all together. Wait until you hear your singers! They are amazing!

In the art room, Annie asked if she could make another alphabet letter game. This led to a Thomas the Tank Engine sticker exploration. Elliott, an avid train lover, began his day very happy! Owen helped Elliott unstick some stickers and Simon knew the names of each train!

046 048 051

053 057

In housekeeping, Kai, Annie, Macy and Nate set up shop, selling babies and stuffed animals. They used wooden chips for money and counted out loud as they popped them into the cash register.

008 010 012

Back in hopscotch Jane, as the teacher, instructed, helped and cheered on friends as they jumped off blocks.

069

Friends played with sticky floam, sorted teddy bears and ships into corresponding colored cups, built structures with Magna-Tiles, explored a pirate ship and played dollies in the loft.

WWF,

It was a busy fun morning at WWF! Our morning began with some cereal and fresh fruit for breakfast.

We moved into the main room to play our donut shop game, and then read two book on monkeys. We then listened to the “Five little monkeys” CD and danced to it.

001

008

Ozzie, Jada and Max played with our new castle. Sloane, Eleanor, Ozzie, Max and Jada joined Miss Lisa in playing with our colored peg game, matching the number of circles in their wooden shapes to the number of pegs on our peg board. We also learned shapes and colors at the same time. A few of the children did Pla-Doh in the kitchen.

011

Clara and PK played with different textured fabric squares, while Miss Amy made a fort on our jungle gym. Different textured fabrics were draped over it, and the children had a great time with it. They played Hide and Seek under it.

015

017

Our mid-morning snack today was cheese. The children enjoyed this outside today. Please know that several of our WWF did not have gloves or mittens today, so their outside time was very limited. Winter jackets are encouraged at this time.

019

Enjoy the weekend!

WF Daily Explorations

At Wee Friends, each, day, we have the opportunity to observe the many benefits of a multi-aged classroom setting. Stanford PhD and international leader in early childhood education, Lillian Katz, expresses:

“Young children who are encouraged, comforted and nurtured by older children will be able to emulate their older classmates when they themselves become the oldest in the group. Children need opportunities to not only observe and imitate a wide variety of competencies, but also to find companions among their peers who match, compliment or supplement their interests in different ways. In a mixed age group, younger children are capable of participating and contributing to far more complex activities than they could initiate if they were by themselves.”

010

Game playing has emerged as an area of great interest. After breakfast, Kai asked if he could set up a game of “Zingo!”. Alexandra and Nate were the first two friends who joined in. As Kai called out the object, he helped both friends recognize if they had a match on their board. Later, Ada and Arleigh requested that they play on the board’s red side. Simon worked diligently at replacing the tiles into their rightful place.

012 013

We introduced a new game yesterday called “Buckaroo!” which requires players to hang different objects on the donkey’s saddle, making sure the donkey doesn’t buck his hind legs with the growing weight on his back. Alexandra carefully placed objects on his saddle while Annie showed her how to press his tail to get his legs down again.

006

In both scenarios, our Wee Friends were able to work collaboratively on the same game at different developmental levels.

025

At the art table, we set out long strips of construction paper, pieces of paper with numbers 1-10, glue and sparkles. Again, each friend mastered this math/art experience according to their own developmental ability and momentary interest!! Macy sequenced numbers 1-7. Annie chose various numbers and then glued the corresponding number of sparkles to each one. Nate exercised fine motor muscles by squeezing the glue bottle and gluing multiple numbers to the paper strip. Arleigh combined numbers and sparkles in an artistic, creative way. Addie sequenced numbers 8-9 and studied the various sparkly shapes in the bowl.

019 020 017

074

Umi, Alma, Alexandra and Nate gathered in the reading area. They took turns reading books and together, retold the stories and then acted them out. They sat together and talked to each other, sharing ideas and listening to one another.

036

043 051

Alexandra tucked her two older friends in bed and read them a bedtime story.

083

With his two older buddies, Stephen explored Simon’s (on loan!) new washing machine experimenting with all the different items that would fit inside it. Ultimately, we all decided clothes were the best and safest fit!052

Whether it’s working a puzzle, snapping beans or sitting in parallel play with a new friend, Elliott fits right in and participates the many activities we explore each day!

068 070 022

Multi-aged classrooms teach children to “…appreciate their own progress and to develop a sense of this continuity..” -L. Katz

We rehearsed for our upcoming THURSDAY NOV 17th CONCERT at 4:30, introducing a new song! We ate a delicious lunch of peanut butter on whole wheat bread, applesauce and cucumbers with cream cheese.

062 014 058

091

Have a fabulous day.

WWF Curious? Just ask Curious George! 11-10-11

002

Our morning began with some dancing with various types of hats on the children’s heads. From there, the children came and sat in a circle, as Sloane pointed to our donuts and wanted to play the donut shop game, so of course, we did! We also did a few additional dances before we read “Frosty the snowman.” The children were very engrossed with this. We discussed what we will be wearing on our cold winter days.

Ozzie brought in his Curious George to share with us today. He was a big hit. In honor of his visit, we pulled down our Curious George color and matching game. It was a big hit! Curious George joined us in our circle! Some of our older friends worked on cutting paper in the kitchen. Others enjoyed a fun sensory activity with our rice tub. The strips the children cut were then glued on to paper.

006

010

008

020

For breakfast today we had pancakes and bananas. Our mid-morning snack was fresh avacado and crackers. Brrr….after a brisk morning of being outside, our chicken and rice soup just hit the spot! We had that with a fresh vegetable and apples.

Speaking of the cold weather, please remember to dress your child accordingly, as we do try and go outside, temperature permitting. As it is damp outside, please anticipate your child to have some soiled clothing. We had a few friends today who enjoyed filling cups with dirt and transporting it to our playhouse.

Hope you enjoy our photos from today!
