Funny Story to Share….

Crystal, Kai’s mom shared this story over the weekend and gave me permission to share it with everyone.  Kai is a current WF kindergartener, all the other children are WF alumni.  I am listed as “Chase’s mom” in the story.

Crystal wrote, “I had Isaac and Honora spending the night last night and we all had a bowl of ice cream for dessert.  The kids started a hilarious conversation:

Kai:  I could probably eat 10 bowls of ice cream.

Honora:  Well, you could, but no parents are nice enough to let you do that.

Isaac:  I could eat 80 bowls of ice cream.

Honora:  But your parents aren’t nice enough to let you.

Isaac:  Right, no parents are that nice.

Honora:  Well, except maybe Chase’s mom.  She’s really nice.

Dylan:  Yeah, that’s true.

Isaac:  Yeah, she is.

Kai:  (incredulous)  Tami?  No way, she’s mean.  She would never let you eat that much ice cream.

Honora and Dylan:  Well, but she IS nice.

Kai:  No, she’s really mean.  Tami is MEAN.  Except sometimes she is a little nice.

Honora: And she makes the best meatloaf.”

Really, this is what makes what I do so fabulous!!!!

Have a great night,

Tami

Gymnastics Monday!

Our Wee Friends are loving every moment on the gymnastic bus with Miss Jennifer. This morning, while our younger friends waited for their turn, we created apple art using laminated apples and dry erase markers.

IMG 9728 IMG 9729

Nate and Addi waited by the door and belted it out using magnetic spheres and rods as their microphones. Stephen continues to defend his right to be a princess too!

IMG 9732 IMG 9727

We read The Apple Doll again and checked in to see how our apple soaking in lemon juice was doing.

IMG 9733 IMG 9738

Macy noticed that the apple smelled like lemonade while Simon commented on how mushy the apple had become. We’ll let it dry out now and continue to study it as it changes form.

IMG 9746

We are turning our reading area tree into an apple tree and many friends, using a picture of an apple as a model, created their own apples with red construction paper.

IMG 9755

After Alexandra finished creating apples, she spent a long while working with scissors.

IMG 9757

Kai and Macy worked collaboratively attaching the leaves to our tree.

IMG 9761

Princesses Alma and Umi snuck away into the Lego/Castle loft, carefully navigating each step in their long gowns.

IMG 9762

IMG 9769

We asked the question: “Have we finished our Snow White exploration?” There was a resounding “no!”. So we studied the dwarves, assembled dwarf like costumes and paraded around the classroom singing “Heigh-Ho”. The princesses ended up back at the cottage asleep and the dwarves examined them. IMG 9772

Everyone gathered to receive a rose. Jane has planned the continuation of our Fairy Tale Study: next we will study Beauty and the Beast. She explained “The princess doesn’t go to sleep, but there is a very mean beast.” Our friends are still making their own connections on how the fairy tales we’ve read are similar/different. After that we will explore Cinderella.

IMG 9773

Here’s an example of how our studies connect to our journaling.

IMG 9764For lunch we served whole wheat pasta with chicken, carrot/peas and apples. Have a great day!!! IMG 9768

Happy Monday Morning! (How can you not smile with Clara smiling at you!)

This morning we welcomed Jada, our newest Wee Wee Friender! Jada enjoyed her morning discovering all of the cool things you get to do at school.

021

In the artroom, Miss Paulina led the children in a collaborative effort of putting apple stickers on a tree and then coloring the big picture together. There were lots of “pre-writing” efforts made by Marta and Elizabeth that were definitely advancing from scribbling to writing. Miss Paulina worked with young toddlers on getting the markers on the paper rather than faces and clothes:) It is a learning process!

031

034

Miss Paulina brought in hand made felt oak leaves for the children to feel, sort and identify color. They enjoyed the texture of the beautiful leaves and acorns.

002

We also did several rounds of small group stories and, of course, our favorite book with CD, “We All go Travelling By”.

Vacation Calendar, WF/WWF Policies

I am gradually adding more and more information to the blog to hopefully make things more convenient for the families.  There is now a tab on the blog with our Vacation Calendar and there is a tab with our Handbook Policies.  Soon there will be a tab with all the forms you may ever want or need!

WF/WWF CACFP Milk Guidelines Have Changed

Starting this week, I will be changing the milk I serve to children over 2 years of age to skim/1% rather than 2%.   Wee Friends is part of CACFP and they have changed our guidelines:

“Milk served in the CACFP must be consistent with the most recent version of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend that persons over two years of age consume low-fat (1%) or fat-free (skim) fluid milk. Therefore, fluid milk served in CACFP to participants two years of age and older must be: fat-free or low-fat milk”  http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/Care/Regs-Policy/policymemo/2011/CACFP-21-2011.pdf (link to the USDA letter)

I will continue to buy whole milk for children under 2 years as this has remained unchanged.   I am required to follow the CACFP guidelines unless I have a doctor’s note on file with other directives.

I will continue to buy organic milk for the children, even though that is not required as I personally believe that organic milk is worth the additional cost for our program.

Thanks!

Tami

WF/WWF New Pictures on Flickr!

I just posted some new flickr photos from the past week. Hopefully just a week’s worth won’t be as overwhelming as the last time (3 weeks) with close to 2000 pictures from the 2 classrooms.

If you get a chance post a comment on how you use the photos. Do you just view them? Do you send links to relatives? Do you make prints?

IMG 9658

This morning, Kai, Macy and Annie continued studying the pictures/scenes in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. As they read they identified “there’s Simon!” (the raven) or “there’s me!” (Kai, the prince). Annie found herself as Snow White and Macy recognized herself as Kai’s horse.

IMG 9663

Yesterday, many friends created beadwork. This interest continued this morning as friends gathered to create crowns, bracelets and necklaces.

IMG 9666

After more conversation about the characteristics of the seven dwarves, Nate found a dwarves cap and Heigh-Ho’d around the classroom!

A few friends enjoyed an apple tree counting game. They rolled the dice and moved a poker chip from apple to apple ’til they made it to the apple in the center of the tree. They practiced counting dots on the dice and number recognition on the apples. They counted out loud as they moved around the board.

There were lots of structures being created in the truck room this morning. Owen built a castle out of Magna-Tiles. Simon and Alma worked collaboratively to make a wrecking ship. Stephen made a sledge hammer out of Trios.

Melinda led each Wee Friend through the multiple-direction process of making silly putty. Glue, water, food coloring, liquid starch, Borax and alot of elbow grease!!!

Our older friends assisted our younger friends. They measured, counted tablespoons, poured, scooped, stirred and squished, identified colors to dye their putty, pulled apart and asked lots of questions!

Melinda read The Apple Doll by Elisa Kleven. We demonstrated how to make an apple doll by peeling the skin, cutting out eyes and a mouth, sticking it onto a stick and dressing it. We extended this exercise into another science experiment by soaking the apple head (just like Susanna in the story) in a lemon bath to see if it will preserve the doll. We’ll take it out Monday and slowly dry it. Next week each Wee Friend will have a chance to make their own apple headed doll.

We also read The True Tale of Johnny Appleseed by Margaret Hodges. We continued our conversation about the man, noticing many interesting things about Johnny from the fabulous illustrations. We got to talking about apple seeds and learned that they are poisonous! We collected the seeds from the apples we served at lunch and studied them. We learned that if you accidently eat one or two seeds from one or two apples it’s not a big deal. If you eat a whole backpack full then you would get very sick. Annie lent us her backpack for a visual demonstration of how many seeds it would take to get really sick. We imagined that Johnny Appleseed probably had a sack that full of seeds. But he didn’t eat them! 🙂

For lunch we served pita pocket pizzas, broccoli and apples!

WWF Daily Explorations, Friday 9-30-11

Good Afternoon!

Despite the dreary weather, WWF had a great morning! We welcomed Jada (20 months old starting on Monday) for her second visit to get acclimated. We also braved the fall weather for some ‘bundled up” outside time.

After our outside play, the children started playing with buttons, which evolved into playdough with button play! This play involved most of the children for quite some time.

065

060

We also had a very long music time with books and dancing:

For breakfast the kids had cheerios, fruit and milk. For lunch we had whole wheat pizzas, broccoli and bananas. For snack we will have banana muffins and cheese.

Have fabulous weekend!

WWF, Out and about! 9-29-11

It was so wonderful to see the sun out this morning. We started our day with trains, planes, and automobiles! The children are really enjoying our new yellow track, and racing the cars down our indoor slide. Ozzie is becoming really good at, “ready, set, go!” Eleanor is counting to three!

Once it was announced we would be going outside, the children helped to gather their shoes and socks, and out we went. How nice it was to open the door, see the sun, and see our WWF take off to the top of the hill and sit on the cement by the garage door. This is WWF “protocol” as they wait patiently for the teacher’s to bring out bikes, our Blue Dogs, and shopping carts. Marta and Elizabeth continue to be our “brave one’s,” while Olivia and Sloane are a little more reserved!

Prior to lunch we did some books accompanied with a CD. The children danced to “We all sing with the same voice.”

Our breakfast this morning was Kix cereal and banana slices. For lunch today we had turkey and cheese tortillas, pear slices, and shredded carrots. Our afternoon snack was cheese and crackers.

This afternoon after nap, Elizabeth and Sloane were busy in the kitchen. Marta, Eleanor, Chloe and Ozzie enjoyed our new fall Pla-Doh.

We are sorry, but no photos today, as we did not locate our camera until recently!

Regards~

WF Daily Explorations, Thursday 9-29-11

Wee Friends had a busy morning filled with children engaged in everyday activities like:

Play dough. Miss Paulina combined Spanish words with the fine motor work of manipulating play dough and the creative work of creating with it.

417

382

419

Housekeeping. The fairy tales continued to play out this morning. There were many princesses and our prince Kai to help them in their times of need.

394

393

Music and dancing. The children moved to a variety of music this morning. Some of the dancing was very dramatic (and princess like!).

397

Story time. In small groups, the children sat with Melinda and Paulina to listen to stories being read aloud.

436

Building. The children have really been enjoying having the trios back in rotation. Today they were combined with the barn to make a thoughtful farm yard.

408

Doll house loft. The children took turns playing in the back room loft which is now set up with the doll house and a sheer fabric for some “privacy”.

426

Hopscotch. As children felt the need to release energy, they spent some time building, climbing, sliding and jumping with friends in a place where it is OK to be a little louder.

431

Outside time, then lunch: Served family style was whole wheat tortillas with co jack cheese, apple sauce and broccoli and carrots.

432

Journals. The older kids journal after lunch. Each child had a person interview with Paulina today about his/her drawing and was encouraged to dictate words or do their own kids spelling.

434

435

Enjoy your day!
