Good afternoon!

Reminder:  Wee Friends will  be closed Monday, May 26th for Memorial Day.  Thank you.

Our friends engaged in a variety of activities this morning. Cece rolled around the classroom while holding her mouse. Eleanor explored the big, wooden trucks and worked on placing Little People characters inside them. A friend also rocked in the rocking chair.

Our friends were eager to build with the waffle blocks again this morning. They asked Miss Tina how to connect the pieces and then tried doing it themselves. A few friends identified the color of the waffle block they were holding.

We enjoyed a wonderful morning outside. Our friends pushed trucks in the rock area, swept the sidewalk with their dust pan set, rode bikes and looked through the gaps of the log climbing house to share a smile.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we explored magnets at our welcome activity.  Some kids decorated their tray and can with magnets creating robots and faces.  Asher noticed that he could make a happy face and an angry face using the magnetic shapes in different ways.  Another friend made an amazing discovery.  He put a magnet under his shirt and it stuck to the other magnet through his clothing!  We turned this into an investigation.  We tried other objects to see what materials and what thicknesses the magnetic force would penetrate.  Several kids joined in exploring this idea.  Friends found they could put round magnets on top of a tray and move them with a magnet underneath.  They found this both magical and delightful!  Science is exciting!

Good afternoon!

We finished our bean journals today.  We drew our plant, remembering all of its parts.  We talked about how our bean had changed.  We looked back at all of the pictures and observations we made over the past couple of weeks and talked about what changes we saw happening over that time.  Over the course of the project, we saw enormous growth in friends ability to deliberately draw what they saw.  Younger kids, who were not able to do this at all before, showed a great deal of growth!  Kids also improved their ability to use words to describe and write about something they were observing from life.

All of our bean plant experiments are taped to our cubbies to take home along with our bean journals.  You can try planting them in a pot at home and continue the experiment…or discontinue it…its up to you:)

At our welcome activity today we puzzled over different ways we could fit a variety of loose parts together.  We used washers, bolts, knobs, rings and triangles to tinker with.

Happy Friday!

This morning we engaged with the wooden cars.  The friends drove them across the floor, on the wooden hollow blocks or on the textured ramps to see how they move on the different textures.

We then headed into the kitchen to create pictures with dot markers.  We all used a variety of colors to create our masterpieces.

Happy 1st day of May!

This morning we listened to the Rain, Rain Go Away song while engaged with the rain stick and our sensory tubes while it was raining outside.

IMG_4640(1)IMG_4642(3)IMG_4644(1)IMG_4646(1)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in the light table with the translucent sensory beads and sensory cylinders.  We were watching the beads run though our hands and stacking the cylinders.  Miss Bekah then switched out the cylinders for plastic eggs and we were scooping up the beads into our eggs and observing the beads with and feeling their texture with our finger.

IMG_4648(1)IMG_4649(1)IMG_4650(1)IMG_4653(1)IMG_4656(1)IMG_4659(1)IMG_4679(1)IMG_4678(1)

This morning we took advantage of the rain free window and headed outside to play. For our sensory activities we engaged in water play and exploring Oobleck (corn starch and water) with a spoon to notice it changing from a solid to a liquid when we scooped it up with our spoon or with our hands.  Charlotte worked on her climbing skills and made it to the top of the climbing house without any assistance from a teacher!

Good Afternoon!

It’s sunscreen season! If you’re looking for a quality sunscreen that has safer ingredients, check out the EWG (Environmental Working Group) as they have several options for kids and adults alike. The Environmental Working Group breaks down ingredients used in a variety of products such as sunscreen as well as lotion, shampoo, etc. Below is a link to the website and sunscreen options, specifically! They have an app that is extremely user friendly as well!

Also, if you have sunhats that your children no longer use or don’t fit anymore, we are asking for donations! If the UV is lower (1, 2, or 3), we opt for sunhats instead and utilize sunscreen when the UV is higher.

PREK1 kiddos focused on animals this morning during their sign in activity. They chose an animal word on the board and we read the name together. They decided if their animal was fast or slow and the circled the animal word with the corresponding marker color.

Science: K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc.

IMG_6984IMG_6990IMG_6988

Today we explored a science project.  Starting with our oldest friends, we experimented with the best recipe for “ooblock”.  We each got a cup of corn starch and a cup of water.  We were instructed to add tablespoons at a time, then mix it to try different amounts.  Some friends found they liked a recipe with more water so that it would be mike “honey, or batter”.  Others liked a thicker recipe that was “chunky” then turned to liquid in their hands.  The ability to mix up this experiment themselves kept kids engaged all morning.  Some stayed over an hour.

As we experienced the sensory experience we were asked to describe what the ooblick felt like.  We made a list of our responses: Hard, goopy, watery, good, icky, chunky, sticky, crunchy, smooth, slimy, soft, like glue, like honey.

PREK2: Today we read “I Hear A Pickle”.  It talked about all of the ways we sense the world around us.  Afterward, we thought about the ooblick we made.  We thought of words we would use to describe what the ooblick felt like in our hands.  We made a class list on the board.

Happy Wednesday!

We spent most of our morning outside today. Our friends enjoy the fresh air and getting to play with our new outdoor toys. Cece joined us in her activity table and shared smiles with her teachers/friends.

IMG_4595(1)

We painted outside this morning with watercolors. Our friends made small brush strokes of color on their papers. A friend shared the names of different fruits they were painting.

IMG_4610(1)IMG_4611(1)IMG_4623(1)IMG_4624IMG_4625(1)

We explored the sandbox with various tools and a few friends sat on a chute to pretend it was a car in the sandbox. The girls sat on the bench and shared smiles with one another as they took a break in the shade.

Good Afternoon!

We took another farm trip today with five of our PREK1 members! The word of the trip: HELPFUL. These kiddos helped Miss Charlotte with several chores around the farm including scooping manure, feeding several animals (horses, goat, and sheep!), and collecting duck and chicken eggs. We also got to observe several different flowers on our walk back up to the weehicle. We stopped by a Redbud tree and Miss Charlotte shared with us that the buds are safe for people to eat. We’re down to try anything and most of us liked the taste! Smile

We are so thankful for the trips we get to take, especially when we can pitch in around the farm and help out. Our kids found out that it takes a lot to keep a farm running!

IMG_6843IMG_6845IMG_6874IMG_6879IMG_6884IMG_6907IMG_6923IMG_6937IMG_6948IMG_6974IMG_6964IMG_6959

Back in the classroom we explored building structures with loose parts both indoors and outdoors.  Inside friends found ways to use loose parts building bridges, ramps, teeter-totters, houses and obstacle courses for cars.

One friend worked with another to make a kind of teeter totter.  One would place a car on one side and allow the car to tip the teeter totter.  Then the other would try to catch the car in a cup.  When allowed to openly explore, deeper learning tends to emerge as it did here. Play can coincide with an early investigation into applied physics!

IMG_9395IMG_9405IMG_9376

Outdoors friends used playdough and natural materials to build.  One friend built a “fireplace” using stones for the hearth, sticks for the chimney and dandelions for the fire.  How creative!

Another friend was intrigued with building a pyramid shape both indoors and outdoors.  inside he created a “roof”, bending and connecting loose parts at our welcome activity.  Outside he made this shape again as a “camp fire” using sticks in play dough.   It was fascinating to watch him experiment with his creative thinking and problem solving skills to play out this building interest in several different ways.
