Good Afternoon!

We worked with action verbs for our PREK1 sign in this morning. Each group member came to sign in where we read their sentence, trying to figure out which action verb should be placed in the blank space. We used context clues to figure out which action verb made sense.

Wee Friends were hard at work on several individual projects at the art table this morning. These kids make things as fast as we can give them materials!  Ryan made himself a set of headphones to wear while he worked on a large race course for cars.  Paige made an obstacle course with a painted maze to follow at the end.  She demonstrated how it worked on the building rug.  Katherine finished her ramp that she has been working on and tested it with friends.  She said she was excited because “it worked so well!”.  Katherine invited others to join and play with the ramp with her. 

Imagining and creating these projects sets off an explosion of brain development in children.  To name a few: critical thinking, creative problem solving, social emotional learning and fine motor development.   Kids learn self motivation as well as trial and error experimentation which builds confidence.  They learn that mistakes are just a part of the learning process and gain the ability to try ideas without fear.  These are skills that will be essential to their success and well being in life!  We are so happy to provide an environment that fosters these experiences at Wee Friends.

We built “small worlds” at our welcome activity this morning.  Friends used our new curved wood arches with a variety of loose parts to make tunnels for trains, islands, forests, arctic ice and bridges between them.  Friends worked together to create imaginative play environments for themselves.

PREK2: At group today we read “Bug Soup”.  A couple of friends voiced that they wanted to continue sorting words until we made it through the alphabet.  They shared some disappointment that we didn’t do that on the board yesterday.  Taking the constructive criticism into account (Winking smile),  I created a word sorting board today and will continue to do the word sort periodically as requested!

Good afternoon!

We started off our morning with art at the kitchen table. Our friends drew with markers in their journal binders or on paper. We made long strokes or circular marks with our markers. Our friends also identified the color of the marker that they were drawing with.

Miss Bekah found a new puzzle for our friends to explore. It’s a mix-and-match set with a teddy bear that our friends can “dress” in various outfits. We also engaged with Cece while she played with a cup stacker.

We then headed outside to enjoy the nicer weather and fresh air. Our friends used their imaginative play skills to engage in the kitchen, build with the Outlast blocks in the rock area, scoop sand in the sandbox, explore trucks by the playhouse and push cars on the balance beam course.

Breakfast: Whole grain Kix cereal with fresh apple.

Lunch: Chicken avocado salad, whole grain wheat flatbread, fresh pineapple slices and cucumber.

Afternoon Snack: Whole grain wheat bagel with peanut butter and bananas.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we began our day dancing with bean bags to the Beanie Bag Dance song.

We then engaged in matching the colors of the pop-up people in the base.

We headed into the kitchen to engage with pegs.  Miss Bekah moved the chairs away from the table to make it a gross and fine motor experience.  She also borrowed the square boards from the preschool class to have a bigger space to work independently on or with a friend.  We were busy building towers and sorting our pegs to put all the same color pegs in first before moving on to another color.

We then headed out to run around the front circle while going through the sheer curtain.

We then sat and built with Magna-Tiles.

Breakfast:  Whole grain wheat bread toasted with butter and cinnamon/sugar mixture and fresh pear slices.

Lunch:  Whole grain penne pasta with shredded turkey, fresh apple slices and cooked green beans.

Afternoon Snack:  Whole milk yogurt and fresh strawberries.

Wee Sprout:  Cucumber.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kiddos kicked off their week by working with numbers for their sign in activity. Each child had a specific number line where one number was missing. They worked at identifying the numbers that were present and then tried to figure out which number was missing. Once they figured out the missing number, they picked out the number from a larger group of numbers.

The science area was buzzing with excitement surrounding new toys and a few new homes for our current toys! The contents of the light table were switched this morning which instantly drew excitement. Asher chose to lay out the wooden cubes on the ground to explore the contents. He took each wooden box, shook it gently, and shared with a peer that was close to him how loud or soft each box sounded.

Friends explored letters and word building at the welcome activity this morning.  The kids could choose from a “Class Name” tray where they could search for letters to spell class names, or they could choose the “Word Tray” searching for letters to spell simple words.

The art center was busy with a variety of self driven projects.  There was a lake with several child made boats to sail on it.  There were also a few roads made as ramps or flat highways.

Most of the class rotated through the building rug at some point in the day to explore what they could do with our new “hollow blocks” and “wooden trucks”.  There were clearly many ideas and great team work!

PREK2: At group we read the story “Thankyou Earth”.  After the story, we thought about what we appreciated about the outdoors.  We made a class list of our ideas.

This morning Miss Bekah created 2 masking tape roads for us to drive on with the new wood vehicles.

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a sensory experience with playdough.  We used hammers, rolling pins, shape cookie cutters, plastic egg halves to manipulate it.  We also had golf tees and a pipe cleaner to stick into our dough.

We then headed out of the kitchen and laid down to act out See The Bunnies Sleeping, rocked in the rocking chair with a friend, played with a baby doll and baby bottles and engaged in a book independently on the reading step.

Good afternoon!

Our friends gathered in the front to listen to Miss Bekah read several teacher books. They all chose a plastic block or a BounceBlock to sit in while they listened to the books. We especially enjoyed the interactive “I Dare You” book by Nicole Maubert, where each page had a different texture for us to feel with our fingers.

We marched around the front the classroom with rhythm sticks along to the “Ants Go Marching” song.

We headed into the kitchen for a loose parts activity with shape color beads, a pattern card and a pipe cleaner. Our friends matched their beads to the pattern card, threaded their beads through the pipe cleaner, or pretended we were making burgers with the beads.

Our friends then played with the shape stackers, rode the rainbow blocks like teeter-totters and went down the soft play ramp block.

Good Afternoon!

A big happy birthday to Hannah who turned four today! Ryan was kind enough to make her her own special birthday hat (peep him in the background looking so proud!)  Smile. We loved celebrating with you!

PREK1 friends came to the sign in board where they turned a singular noun into its plural form! Each child chose a card from the bottom of the word. We read the word together and then worked to turn the word into a plural noun!

This morning our welcome activity invited kids to sort in groups of tens in an interesting and stimulating way.  Some sorted colored puff balls into test tubes which lead to imaginative play around the ideas of potions and experiments.  Others sorted buttons by color and shape.  Another tray offered color sorting by tens with colored trays and bears.  Friends could choose a variety of fine motor tools to help them sort or pair up with a partner allowing for growth in cooperation and teamwork.

Friends got creative with cardboard in the art center making hats, picture frames and even a van with little cut out people, seatbelts and bags filled with tiny cut out accessories, all hand made…  Wow!  Friends also worked at the easel creating sponge dot paintings in all sorts of unique ways!

Arthur said this morning, “I want to do a project.”.  I replied, “Do you have an idea for a project?”. He responded “Yes, I want to do something with water and building things and trucks”.  We came up with this sensory bin in response.  Friends built roads and bridges across the water or used the stones to create lagunes and islands.  This is a strong example of child lead learning.

Happy Wednesday!

This morning we engaged with shape buttons and gems on the light table.  We were busy arranging them, sorting the shapes and fitting them together like a puzzle.

Cece engaged with a teddy bear and a waffle block cube made for her.  Her sister Ellie joined her in her play.

We then headed outside to play.  Today we brought out the chalk to draw on the chalkboard and cement.  Charlotte and Eleanor engaged in the rock area picking up the rocks and making a pile and scooping and pouring the rocks into a bucket.  We also noticed that the dog from next door was outside and we watched him through the fence.

PREK2:  We read the story “Monsters Love School” during group today.  After the story, we came up to the board for a word sorting activity.  We determined if our word card began with a “C” or “B” and then placed our word in the correct category.
