Good Afternoon!

This morning our friends engaged with the star rainbow mats to rock on them like  teeter totters.

IMG_6033IMG_6032IMG_6043IMG_6042

We then headed into the kitchen for an exciting sensory experience with corn starch and water.  We worked our fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills to use an eye dropper to add water to our corn starch.  We noticed as it got wetter the consistency of the corn starch changed.  We then used our hands to scoop it up as it was solid on the bottom of our bowl and when we picked it up it was a liquid and ran through our fingers.  Emily shared that it was “gooey and looked like snow.”  There was lots of laughter when several friends found out they could squeeze their eye dropper to make bubbles in the liquid.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres.

Ms. Kim set up a book “tasting’ center this morning for the Kindergarteners. On each plate was the name of the book genres we discussed this morning (i.e. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, and poetry). They looked at each book and identified what category it fits under. Then they went around placing that book on the matching plate.

Fun with oats! Our food theme continued with oat play. The WF poured, mixed, and measured out their oats to make some tasty treats. Some even experimented with the balance to weigh out their portions. Today’s creations included: cherry pie, macaroni, and poison. It was certainly messy, but LOTS of FUN!!!

Breakfast: Oatmeal & fresh strawberries

Lunch: Farm eggs, flatbread, carrot chips, & watermelon

PM Snack: Popcorn & raisins

Wee Sprouts: Carrot chips

Good Afternoon!

This morning we all were engaged building with our wood blocks.  We stacked the hollow blocks and added the animals into our play.  We worked to balance our animals to stand on top.  Arthur created a structure with his blocks.

We then headed into the kitchen to draw with new markers in our journal binders.  We created many drawings with a variety of vibrant colors.

IMG_5920IMG_5923IMG_5925

We then headed outside to get some fresh air and enjoy the warmer temperatures and sunshine.

Hello Warm Weather!

IMG_4163(2)IMG_4159(2)

We can’t get enough of days like this! A couple of our friends made a special potion to make the winter go away. The rest of us may have to join in too!

K.DA.1 Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes.

Our Kindergarteners had a blast this morning sorting objects based upon weather it would sink or float. There were a few predictions what the objects would do. We were surprised by a few of our guesses.

IMG_4118(2)IMG_4116(2)IMG_4121(2)

Today’s STEM activity included pipe cleaners, straws, cups, rubber bands, and tape. They were all left out on the center of the table to see what wonderful, creative things your child would make. They did not disappoint! All of their creations were so inspiring to see. There were a few houses, instruments, and bridges. Ms. Linsey pulled out toy animals so our friends could test the strength of them.

Breakfast: Cheerios & pears

Lunch: Cheese quesadillas on whole wheat tortillas, sugar snap peas/cucumbers, & pears/pineapple

PM Snack: PB on whole wheat toast & string cheese

Good Afternoon!

This morning we were engaged in the housekeeping area.  Several friends chose dress up hats and purses to carry while they went on a trip.  The rest of us were busy setting out our food on plates, using our imaginative skills to get water from the faucet in our cup and washing our food in the sink.

IMG_5858IMG_5847IMG_5859IMG_5851IMG_5873

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in playdough.  Each friend manipulated it in different ways.  Some of us used our hands to make our big piece into lots of little pieces, while some of us explored using the different tools to cut our playdough using a pizza cutter or a cookie cutter.

IMG_5876IMG_5878IMG_5879IMG_5888IMG_5891IMG_5881

Eleanor explored her fingers and cooed while playing on her playmat.

Today we conducted an experiment using ice and salt.  Several friends had asked why we put salt on the side walks so this experiment was inspired by those questions.  The kids were able to take the salt and sprinkle it onto blocks of ice,  watching as the salt created holes and tunnels.  After some melting had occurred everyone added drops of color using eye droppers.  As the color filled the melted tunnels everyone could clearly see how the salt had melted the ice in beautiful designs.  Many of our friends stayed for a long time thinking of ways to melt the ice further.  Some put the ice in bowls of colored water while others re-collected the colored water from the trays and poured jars of it over the ice.  Everyone had a chance to learn through this exploration.

“Play is the highest form of research.”

-Albert Einstein

So many activities, so little time. All of them are important to the growth and creative outlet to each child. Here are just a few of the MANY benefits of S.T.E.M. play. These are the things that are a part of our curriculum on a daily basis.

  • Conflict resolution
  • Regulating emotions
  • Problem-solving
  • Higher critical thinking skills
  • Builds self-esteem
  • Trial and error skills

IMG_3928(1)IMG_3941(1)

Ms. Linsey removed the clothes line pins and replaced it with tape. Our friends made all sorts of structures. Maggie made a house for her animals. Adrian made a store with all the departments. There were quite a few aisles devoted to fruits and vegetables.

IMG_3932(1)IMG_3935(1)

The excitement was high because of the new playdough. We added colorful sticks, people, and small animals for extra fun! One very creative friend made a penguin nest.

Lunch: Whole wheat tortilla w/ turkey lunchmeat, cucumbers/bell peppers, & cantaloupe.

PM Snack: Goldfish, string cheese, and bananas

Happy Friday!

This morning we began by going many different directions in the classroom.  We slid down the slide, cooked food in housekeeping, drove the airplane with Little People, looked at a book and engaged with the Lego people.

IMG_5812IMG_5818IMG_5822IMG_5831IMG_5833IMG_5824

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with watercolor ice cubes.  We all enjoyed watching the colors melt onto our papers as we moved the ice cube around to create our paintings.  We will definitely have to do it again soon.  We all loved it!
