Good afternoon and happy first day of December!

For our kindergarten sign in activity, we used a 2-D map where we focused on our city and state as well as surrounding states that touch Indiana! All three kindergarteners live in different cities so it was fun to talk about that. One kindergartener wanted to write a lower case ‘i’ for Indiana which prompted a conversation about using uppercase letters for all cities and states. At this age, it’s challenging for children to distinguish between cities, states, and countries (such big and vast ideas!). So, we’ve been working on becoming familiar with these words as well as identifying each.

We brought out ‘Here and There’ again today for K/PREK1 group but today, we focused on ‘nature’ for various countries such as Peru, Canada, Morocco, and Borneo. We found all of these countries on the map and were able to see where they are in comparison to the United States! Friends were curious about anacondas so looked them up on the internet and found a few pictures—wow! Let’s just say that no group members would want to come face to face with an anaconda!

Happy Wednesday and last day of November!

Today we were busy in the kitchen engaged in water play, washing our babies and items from the housekeeping area.  We each had a bin of water with a little dish soap, a sponge and a toothbrush to help get them all clean.  Ben and Eliza each had a little water to pour out of their bowl, a spoon and a sponge to squeeze the water out with their hands.

Good Afternoon!

Kindergarteners used a globe to aid in their sign in this morning. Questions like, “What does the blue represent on the globe?” were asked as well as the country that we live in. This lead to a conversation about the differences between South Bend (city), Michiana (area around us), and United States (country).  We used the globe to help us answer these questions!

During our K/PREK1 group, we read a few pages from the book ‘Here and There’ which focuses on different traditions and the makeup of various countries around the world (it’s a great book to have to compare and contrast how we live verses how other cultures/people live!). We focused on a few pages that dealt with how a few other cities and countries look such as Hong Kong and Bangladesh (sky scrappers were a big topic with this group once it was brought up!). Before we read about these cities and countries, we used a world map to see just where they are compared to Indiana!

It was a game type of morning! Our older preschoolers and kindergarteners love to play games and there are many benefits to games at this age. Through games, children learn how to follow rules and explore cooperation.

Daniel and Bo played a few rounds of Uno which allowed them to work on their math skills as well! Bo commented, “I have three cards here and two cards over here so I have five cards total left!”

Memory games can get quite competitive in our classroom but children do a great job of cheering their peers on! Maggie, Daniel, and Bo played a round of memory and it ended up being a very close game.

Rowan and a kindergarten peer played a matching rhyming game. The objective was to find the rhyming matching images and see if they go together. They did a fantastic job at encouraging one another.

Shortly before lunch, a few children asked to make bead bracelets! This is one of our favorite fine motor activities. Children made a few bracelets and some even incorporated patterns using colors into their bracelet.

Good Afternoon!

Yesterday, Miss Tami brought in some head bands for us to add to our housekeeping dress up items.  The friends were busy this morning trying each one on to turn into Minnie Mouse, a unicorn, a tiger and a flower.  We love them! Thank you.

We then went into the kitchen to paint using Q-tips and watercolors.  We watched as the colors soaked into our papers as we were creating colorful masterpieces.

We then headed outside.  We all decided to cook something delicious in the kitchen today.

Good Afternoon!

The focus of the kindergarteners this week is on maps and globes! Today, we looked at a map of the United States for sign in. They had to write down another state that they’ve been to besides Indiana. Our three kindergarteners have been to the following three states: Tennessee (“The Smokey Mountains!), Oregon (Portland!), and Michigan!

Social Studies: K.2.4 Give examples of how to be a responsible family member and member of a group.

We started an art project today that will require multiple steps. The first step was to paint a paper towel tube white!

What do you think we’re making?!

Good Afternoon! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and weekend.

This morning we began by engaging in various areas of the classroom.  Ben crawled and laid under the star rainbow, Eliza worked her fine motor and hand-eye coordination skills to spin the letters and animals on the Zany Zoo activity box, Dax explored the loose part manipulatives and Emily, Hannah and Paige listened to Miss Bekah read many books to them on the reading step.

IMG_4107IMG_4112IMG_4114IMG_4115

We then headed into the kitchen to play in the corn and bean sensory table.  We did a lot of scooping and we talked about the different Fall nature items and the names of them.  We have corn cobs, a gourd and pine cones.  Eliza and Ben engaged in the table with the friends as well for the first time.

IMG_4116IMG_4122IMG_4119IMG_4120IMG_4121IMG_4124

*Wee Friends will be closed for our winter vacation Monday, December 26-Friday, January 6, 2023. Thank you!

Good Afternoon!

This morning Miss Tina got out the playdough for our sensory activity.  We used a variety of tools to make our playdough creations.  Several of our friends were making birthday cakes for mom, dad or themselves and singing Happy Birthday to them.

IMG_4068IMG_4071IMG_4073IMG_4069IMG_4072

We then headed over to engage with the balls or coin object permanence boxes.  We placed our ball or coin into the hole or slot and watched as it disappeared into the box and then reappear in the drawer or tray.

IMG_4075IMG_4076IMG_4078IMG_4079IMG_4080

We then went outside to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine, to play in the snow and with our favorite activities.
