Welcome back and hope everyone enjoyed the weekend!  It will be a short week but we still have lots of playful learning to enjoy!

This morning we explored some playdough beading activities.  We offered playdough trays with long sticks for stacking and counting beads.  We also offered trays with small colored match sticks for counting smaller numbers or for creating something sculptural…which naturally happed.  One of our friends stacked and counted 33 beads on each of his three sticks.  We discovered that all together he had stacked 99 beads.  After that he had to squeeze one more on to get 100!  Another pair of friends worked together with the small match sticks to create a “porcupine covered in beads”.  Someone else made it a birthday cake.  It was a great mix of math and imagination!

IMG_1354IMG_1356IMG_1317IMG_1363IMG_1366

The counting continued with sponge dots on the easel.  One of our older friends painted and counted  50 dots!  Other friends used the dots to make beautiful abstract works of art!

For our PREK1 sign in, children came to the board where they got to choose a notecard from the bottom of the easel. They read aloud the equation (5-3 for example) and had to figure out the total. The equations were a mixture of addition and subtraction. Once they figured out the total, they taped their equation under their total!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=3+2 and 5=4+1)

William was in the mood for projects this morning!  He first got to work creating a comic book about “Building things”.  The comic book was appropriately named “Road Builder”.  Next he built a bird, an airplane and a shield all out of paper and tape! It was a very productive morning for William!

IMG_1278IMG_1299

The interest in book making continued among others in the class as well!  Many of us participated in the creation of a class book.  Everyone worked on creating one page and describing what they had made.  Everyone that was able signed their work.

IMG_1283IMG_1294

The collage project with scissors, shaped paper punches and leaves continued today as well.  Several friends revisited these tools creating more collages while others who had not joined in before gave the project as try.

IMG_1276IMG_1269

There has been an ongoing chain project that many of our classmates have worked on over the past couple of days.  During this process the round table has been wrapped all the way around in chains.  Against all reason, several fiends have enthusiastically volunteered themselves to be chained to a chair like some sort of meticulous preparation for a magicians trick…though no one ever did make a miraculous escape…

Good Afternoon!

Today we celebrated a friend’s birthday so we brought out the stacking birthday cake. We helped each other stack the different number layers and noticed that the layers alternated between brown and white.

IMG_7104IMG_7108IMG_7109IMG_7105

We then made our way to the kitchen with Miss Bekah to engage in some sensory play with shaving cream and trucks. We first explored it with our hands and rubbed it all over our spot at the table. We then used trucks to create prints in our shaving cream.

Our friends enjoyed playing with balls and using them to practice their throwing skills. Even our babies got to explore the balls. Our friends also enjoyed riding the bikes down the hill.

Good afternoon!

This morning we began by engaging in a book independently.

IMG_7029IMG_7031IMG_7033IMG_7034

We then headed into the kitchen with Miss Tina to work with our loose part beads.  We were given a pipe cleaner to work on stringing our beads onto it.

IMG_7057IMG_7058IMG_7060IMG_7063

Eden and Eleanor engaged with the object permanence boxes with balls to place the ball into the hole and watch for it to reappear in the drawer or tray.  They were also sharing and handing their balls to each other.

IMG_7064IMG_7065IMG_7066IMG_7067

We then headed outside to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and Fall morning.  We rode with a friend on the teeter totter, ordered food from our friend in the play house and Eleanor enjoyed her toys on the blanket.

Good Afternoon!

We have been noticing Nesta’s continued interest in daily renderings of the alphabet in marker, stencil, pencil and just about every material available.  In response this morning we put out materials for a little alphabet book making project to see if it would offer a new angle and material for this interest.  We offered stamps, colored pencils and markers plus a little book with a colored paper cover.  There was interest from the whole class who joined in to created their own version of a book.  Some mixed print with illustration.  Some devoted a page to each letter in the alphabet.  Some stamped and some wrote the letters.  There were several letter books but only one that made it all the way to letter Z:)  The project was open ended and had a lot of room for creative solutions!

Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 friends have been focusing on simple addition problems. Today, they came to sign in and after finding their name, identified the two numbers that they’d be adding together. Some friends were able to do the addition problem without any manipulatives while others used color sorters to add the two numbers. A few friends needed help writing their sum so they connected the dots to make the correct number with the help of a teacher!

K.CA.1-2: Solve real world problems, objects, or drawings that involve addition and subtraction within 10. Demonstrate the equation (e.g., 5=3+2 and 5=4+1).

IMG_0988

This morning we created some interactive math activities that were designed to meet our young learners where ever they were, based on age and/or development.  Our youngest friends were able to sort by color and count a few of their sorted objects.  Some were able to select the correct corresponding number tile for their sum.  Older friends used the wood number pieces to create some simple addition problems.  Since the opportunity was there, friends who had the understanding were able to create subtraction and multiplication problems as well.  It was wonderful to see the curiosity, enthusiasm and confidence to try this activity from all of our Wee Friends!

IMG_0965IMG_0985IMG_0993IMG_1001

Outside we all got to try out our new classroom leaf rakes.  We had quite the leaf clean up crew!  Many of our friends did a wonderful job working together to rake, pick up and cart the leaves to the yard waste bin.  Older friends helped younger friends pick up the cart to dump it in.  Older friends also helped to show younger friends how to use the rake to get it to rake up the leaves efficiently.  Great teaching and team work Wee Friends!

IMG_1024IMG_1025IMG_1027

Our younger friends are continuing to work on their journaling skills.  Most of our PREK2 journaling group has been able to recognize and pick out their name stick.  A couple of friends are starting to write their names as well.  We have such rich descriptions of artwork coming from this group!  Bubble drawings were popular this time around!  We had girls trapped in bubbles, Bubble monsters and bubble machines!
