Happy Monday, Pajama Day and Happy Halloween!

This morning we began our day building with the big wood blocks, playing with cars, colored rings and climbing on the habi-trail.

IMG_3246IMG_3247IMG_3248IMG_3256IMG_3254IMG_3252IMG_3259

We then did several activities with our big pumpkin. We first played our version of Ring around the Rosie but went around the pumpkin instead. Afterwards, we headed into the kitchen to do two pumpkin activities simultaneously. Two friends pounded golf tees into the pumpkin while 2 other friends used dot markers to decorate a paper pumpkin. Friends did great waiting patiently for their turn with both activities.

Happy Monday and Happy Halloween!

Our three kindergarteners kicked off their Monday by working with singular and plural nouns in sentences. They had to determine if the singular noun made sense in the sentence or if the plural noun belonged.

K.W.6.1a: Nouns/Pronouns- Writing sentences that include singular and/or plural nouns (e.g, dog/dogs, cat/cats)

IMG_7623IMG_7622

Our work with singular and plural nouns continued on into K/PREK1 after we read Frankenstein which followed the story of Madeline!

I read each sentence with both options. For example, I read the following two sentences:

1. “You have ten finger on your hands.”

2. “You have ten fingers on your hands.”

Children had to determine which word completed the sentence. When we were done filling in each missing space in the five sentences, we looked at he word BEFORE the noun which often was a number word. We noticed that any number over one added an ‘s’ to the noun while the sentences with ‘a’ or ‘one’ was a singular noun without an ‘s’ at the end.

We spent the morning making homemade vegan pumpkin bread! Most of our friends helped add an ingredient to our mixture. We patiently waited for the bread to cook and everyone loved having it for a special snack this afternoon!

The rest of our day involved indoor activities such as reading and table top explorations. Daniel pretended he was the teacher and had a small group of children he read to!

Happy Friday!

We wrapped up our week in kindergarten by sorting pictures into four season categories: spring, summer, fall, and winter. There were activities that children shared, “You can’t build a snowman in the summer time!”

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, opposites).

After reading ‘The Big Bad Wolf and Lil Wolf’ in K/PREK1 group, Rowan and Bo had an extensive journal time where they journaled for fifteen minutes before wrapping up and writing their description. Everyone in group is at a different developmental level, some still working on letter identification and formation while others are starting to identify letter sounds which is a precursor to kid spelling!

IMG_9289IMG_9288

Rowan and Millie had a conversation with Miss Kim about their interests for the housekeeping area. They decided on a shopping theme which led them to the art table where they each made a collage with different toys that they found in magazines.

IMG_9242IMG_9243

The sunshine greeted us as we headed outside! Children rode bikes and collected leaves. Before lunch, several kids ended up on the deck reading books.

Happy Friday!

This morning we painted with Miss Tina using glitter paint on “real” big leaves that she found for us.  We all enjoyed painting with the colors; green, orange, red and yellow.  Several friends shared their description of the paint. Arthur shared it was “sticky”, Emily shared it was “very glittery”, and Paige shared, “it’s sparkly.” It is so great to hear them expressing their thoughts.

IMG_3230IMG_3231IMG_3232IMG_3233IMG_3234

While the older friends were painting, Ben and Eliza explored the leaves with many of their senses.  They crinkled and tore the leaves with their hands and heard the sound made when they did it.

Good afternoon!

We started our morning by playing with the railroad tracks and their accompanying trains. We all shared the different pieces with one another and enjoyed playing together.

IMG_3132IMG_3131

We enjoyed other activities like playing with the plastic rings, looking at ourselves in the mirrors, and playing peek-a-boo with our dress up scarves.

IMG_3139IMG_3135

IMG_3138IMG_3141

We then headed to the kitchen to do some sensory play with the play-dough. We used different items to manipulate the play-dough, such as golf tees, cookie cutters, and popsicle sticks. This was the first time both Eliza and Ben got to explore the play-dough with the rest of their friends.

Good Afternoon!

Today we cut open our pumpkin.  Miss Bekah scooped out some of the pulp and seeds for us and put it on our trays.  We then had the opportunity to scoop some out with the spoon or our hands.  Emily said the pulp felt “gooey”, and Paige said it felt “cold.”  We all really enjoyed our sensory experience.

Good Afternoon!

Kindergarten sign in focused on sorting items into specific groupings based on similarities. There was a bowl full of various materials such as boats, bears, trains, cars, and fire engines. Each kindergartener had to choose how to sort the materials. Once they decided how they wanted to sort the items, they placed the groupings onto the chart. Daniel and C chose to sort the items based on color while Bo chose to sort only the transportation vehicles, sorting the vehicles by type: car, boat, fire engine, and train.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, opposites).

IMG_7546IMG_7543

In K/PREK1 group, we gathered around in a circle and spread out several laminated shapes. I told the group members to take a minute to look at the shapes. Then, I shared with them that we’d be using the sorting chart in the middle of the floor but they had to choose how the shapes are sorted. By working together, they sorted the shapes three different ways: by color, by shape type, and by number of sides!

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, opposites).

IMG_7554IMG_7555IMG_7556

A few friends sat down at the welcome activity to begin their Wednesday. Children took animals and sorted them by where they live: at the zoo, in a house, or at a farm.

IMG_9073(1)IMG_9075

The art table was super busy this morning. First, markers and paint dotters dominated our morning before a friend asked to do playdough. The chairs had alternating friends exploring the playdough up until we had to clean up for lunch!
