Good Afternoon!

Kindergarten sign in focused on sorting items into specific groupings based on similarities. There was a bowl full of various materials such as boats, bears, trains, cars, and fire engines. Each kindergartener had to choose how to sort the materials. Once they decided how they wanted to sort the items, they placed the groupings onto the chart. Daniel and C chose to sort the items based on color while Bo chose to sort only the transportation vehicles, sorting the vehicles by type: car, boat, fire engine, and train.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, opposites).

In K/PREK1 group, we gathered around in a circle and spread out several laminated shapes. I told the group members to take a minute to look at the shapes. Then, I shared with them that we’d be using the sorting chart in the middle of the floor but they had to choose how the shapes are sorted. By working together, they sorted the shapes three different ways: by color, by shape type, and by number of sides!

A few friends sat down at the welcome activity to begin their Wednesday. Children took animals and sorted them by where they live: at the zoo, in a house, or at a farm.

The art table was super busy this morning. First, markers and paint dotters dominated our morning before a friend asked to do playdough. The chairs had alternating friends exploring the playdough up until we had to clean up for lunch!

Good Afternoon!

Yesterday in K/PREK1 group, we read ‘Are You My Mother?’ by Dr. Seuss. After we were done reading the story, we talked about the three main types of ending punctuation and when we use each. Today, Bo and Daniel completed a kindergarten sign in where they had to distinguish between each punctuation mark by circling them with a specific marker color.

K.W.6.2b: Punctuation– Recognizing and naming ending punctuation.

We read, ‘Same, Same, But Different’ in K/PREK1 group today which is a book in our MACK section. To begin the story, we met two children who became pen pals that lived across the country from each other. While they shared similarities such as riding a bus to school, the look of the buses was quite different!

The MACK that we will focus on this week is:

Children will celebrate the differences and similarities that connect all people.

IMG_9066IMG_9065IMG_9063

Several children explored the morning welcome activity. The activity was an open ended activity where children used three materials: colored bears, popsicle sticks, and white tiles. Children used these materials in a variety of ways! In any open ended activity, children guide where the activity goes and teachers serve as a helper if needed. For example, getting out other materials that they may need to extend their learning.

We enjoyed another nice morning outside. So many things happened during our outdoor experience. Daniel practiced his story telling by telling a group of his peers a few spooky Halloween stories. Friends searched throughout the yard for leaves by using their hands or a barrel. A group of younger peers practiced their tracing skills by tracing their friends body outlines with chalk while Maggie used the chalk to practice her letter A!

Happy Friday!

This week has been all about patterns and today, we focused strictly on making our own patterns!

During kindergarten sign in, Daniel and Bo worked with numbers in the form of dots to make their patterns. For example, Bo chose to make the pattern 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1.

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers of shapes.

IMG_8808IMG_8813

After reading a Frog and Toad story focused on the fall time, we used the wooden rainbow to create patterns using colorful puff balls. When children make patterns, they tend to be more on the simple side such as an ABAB pattern. However, today that went out the window!

The four K/PREK1 group members created more challenging and complex color patterns! The patterns they came up with were ABCDEABCDE, ABCABC, ABCCABCC, and AABCDDEEAABCDDEE. QUITE complex! “I’m going to make a hard one!”—they took great pride in the patterns they came up with!

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers of shapes.

A few friends helped me make two new batches of playdough this morning! They discussed it and decided on a blue batch and a pink batch. They were amazing helpers.

IMG_8782IMG_8789IMG_8788

We finally got a nice morning full of sunshine! We spent time outside which was amazing for our bodies and souls.

Good Afternoon!

Kindergarteners worked with a bar graph that showed data on our favorite vegetables. They had to answer questions like, “How many people liked peppers the most?”

They were able to look at the graph and answer the questions!

K.W.5: With support, build understanding of a topic using various sources. (Identify relevant pictures, charts, grade- appropriate texts, personal experiences, or people as sources).

IMG_8738IMG_8735

After we read one of our favorite MACK books A Tale of Two Beasts, children were given a bead bracelet that I started for each of them. They continued the pattern on their pipe cleaner before we made it into bracelets. The patterns that children continued were ABBABB, AABBAABB, AAABBBAAABBB and ABCABC.

K.CA.5: Create, extend, and give an appropriate rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers of shapes.

IMG_2858IMG_2863IMG_2864IMG_2865IMG_2861IMG_2895

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with Miss Bekah.  We used two different shaped leaves to paint our papers using green, red and yellow tempera paint.  We created colorful masterpieces.
