Good afternoon on this cloudy day!

This morning we played in different areas of the class with friends or on our own. Arthur and Hannah held hands while walking around the front area. Dax put on some of our dress up clothes and headed to the kitchen to engage in imaginative play.

IMG_7701IMG_7699

We made our way to the kitchen for sensory play with play dough. We used different tools like scissors to ‘cut’ our dough into pieces and popsicle sticks to make different ‘treats’. Eliza pressed a cookie cutter into her dough to make a cross.

After sensory play, we went to the front area to build and create with Magna-tiles. Dax stacked square tiles to make one tall tower. Arthur created a rectangular building and Paige helped him finish the top with some triangular tiles.

Hello Parents,

IMG_7417(2)IMG_7422(1)IMG_7426(2)

Our Kindergarteners practiced counting by 10’s using our Unifix Cubes. We discovered that 10 groups of 10 equal 100. By counting by 10’s, we are able to add our objects faster compared to counting them individually.

When Daniel was done grouping his cubes, he  laid all 100 of them down to see how long it was compared to his body. Then he wanted to stand them up to see how high it would be from the ground.

IMG_7389(2)IMG_7390(2)IMG_7388(2)

Today, in the sensory bin we set up a color mixing water table due to popular demand.  Everyone has been asking about doing something like the Friday green hue activity, so we set that up for further exploration.  The kids started with all the primary colors and mixed them in a variety of jars, bottles, and tubes leaving the opening for a variety of imaginative play ideas!

IMG_7411(2)IMG_7445(2)IMG_7404(2)

We arranged a loose parts table to stimulate creative thinking and imaginative play.  Loose parts leave possibilities wide open having no clear objective. They objects and tools can become anything with any purpose. We had a pharmacy, soup, building blocks and two bags became doctors gloves.  This is the kind of creativity loose parts play allows to happen!

Breakfast: Oatmeal & strawberries

Lunch: French toast casserole, carrots/cucumbers, & watermelon

PM Snack: Tortilla chips & hummus

Wee Sprouts: Carrot chips & cucumbers

Good Afternoon!

This morning we painted using sponges with Miss Tina.  The sponges we used were; a car, elephant, crescent, rocket ship, cow and rabbit.  We used a variety of bright colors to create beautiful paintings or stamp the objects onto our papers.

Good Afternoon!

Today, we explored a famous earth works artist by the name of Andrew Goldsworthy.  Everyone has been very interested in building with rocks in the sensory bin, so we offered this book at the round table along with trays of sand, and a bowl of smooth pebbles of different sizes.  Several of us made round or spiraled shapes with the stones like some we saw in the book.  Another found images of Cairns (stone sculptures) and worked to reproduce them.  We talked about finding flat stones stacking from large to small and carefully balancing them.  One friend had the idea to use the kinetic sand to help the rocks stick together better!

IMG_7313(2)IMG_7314(2)IMG_7312(2)

A number of us created mixed media paintings in the art center.  Remembering our crayon and paint experiment, we tried oil pastels with water color over the top.  We loved the interesting effects made by this mixed media technique!

IMG_7351(2)IMG_7344(2)IMG_7383(2)

Our older friends worked on stringing our egg carton spring flowers using yarn and a yarn needle.  We learned how to poke the needle through pushing it toward the counter so not to poke ourselves.  We hung our finished strings of flowers in the art center for all of us to enjoy.

Breakfast: Cheerios & oranges

Lunch: Grilled cheese on whole wheat bread, peppers/carrots, & pineapple

PM Snack: English Muffins w/ PB

Wee Sprouts: Baby carrots & peppers

Happy 2nd birthday Hannah!  We are so happy we were able to celebrate with you.  Thank you so much for the special birthday treat.  We loved it!

IMG_7537

Since today is Hannah’s birthday, Miss Bekah got out the stacking birthday cake.  We all worked together to stack it into a big cake.  While we were stacking we worked on our number recognition, counting skills and patterning.

IMG_7541IMG_7539IMG_7534

During our outside time we engaged with some added plates and pots for our sand to go into in the sandbox.  Some of us also sat or rode on the dump truck.

Welcome Spring!

**Please take home your child’s art from both cubbies.**

It’s always a good day for mixing water colors. Daniel asked to get the water colors out to explore. He asked for bright orange and yellow to mix today. He quickly discovered that it made a slightly more yellow solution. Things got really fun when we added soap to make bubbles.

IMG_7157(2)IMG_7151(2)IMG_7159(2)

Today we transformed our house keeping area into a loose parts kitchen so that we could all use even more of our imaginations as we played.  Instead to food items, we introduced a variety of loose parts to use in our pretend play.  We introduced a variety of containers with lids, real pots, pans, metal bowls, wood bowls, spoons and a range of real kitchen utensils.  Today we used acorns, glass beads and sticks for our loose parts.  Some of us filled many jars with items to “sell at the market”.  Others cooked large bowls of acorn soup.  The sticks were used both as ingredients and utensils.  We all found something new we could enjoy in our kitchen today!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Today we painted with 3 different shades of green paint.  Miss Bekah had one bowl with the regular green, another bowl had white tempera paint mixed into it and another bowl had black mixed with it.  We were able to see how white paint made the green shade lighter and black paint made the green shade darker.  We painted on a shamrock shape piece of white paper and then could continue on white pieces of paper if we chose.

IMG_7481IMG_7491IMG_7492IMG_7496IMG_7499IMG_7497

We found a new blanket for Eleanor with a mirror on it.  During tummy time, she looked at her reflection in the mirror.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Everyone enjoyed our green hues St Patrick’s Day mixing experiment!  We used eye droppers to collect yellow, blue and green and combine it in ice cube trays, test tubes and jars to create a wide variety of green hues.  Each tray was different so we came back many times to get a chance to try them all.  This activity was out right after breakfast and engaged our imaginations, bodies and experimental curiosity until lunch time!  Many of us created potions.  One friend was struggling to pour liquid into bottles and asked if she could use a funnel to make it easier.  We were happy to oblige and many other friends began using this tool to help with their pouring as well.

IMG_7126(2)IMG_7125(2)IMG_7128(1)IMG_7072(2)IMG_7117(3)

We also created green sparkling paintings using different shades and tints of green.  We learned that when we add black to a color it is a shade and when we add white it’s called a tint.  We created paintings or mixed media artwork using the shades and tints in combination with drawings

IMG_7114(2)IMG_7112(2)

We made a special St. Patrick’s Day snack. We made green muffins! We used spinach to get it to be a bright green and yes, they did gobble them up in no time. We also had a special green lunch. We had green tortillas and green chicken salad. There was some extra spinach from the muffins. We put them into the Wee Sprout bowl. A few of our friends came by and tried it.
