Happy Friday!

This morning, we listened to songs like Wheels on the Bus and Sleeping Bunnies while we played. Some friends ran around the circle together, while others played with bounce blocks and scarves on the habitrail

Happy Friday!

This morning a friend noticed a seed pod hanging from a plant and asked if it was a tomato.  It was round like a tomato but was dry and small.  We opened it and found it was full of seeds.  We talked about how the flower on this plant had become a seed pod after it was pollinated.  After that, several kids searched for different types of seed pods around the outdoor area.  We found there were Rose of Sharon seed pods, money plant seed pods and milkweed pods.  We brought our seeds to the deck to spend time opening the pods and collecting seeds.  We talked about how they were the same, how they were different and what kinds of plants they could grow into.  It was a wonderful child lead science project!

Good Afternoon!

We took a trip to the farm today where we used the word ‘quality’ when doing a chore in the barn. Farmer Charlotte had asked us to clean the barn floor that was covered with loose hay. We were tasked with sweeping the hay into the stall for the horses to eat! Farmer Charlotte had been talking about ‘quality help’ just as we walked into the barn so we talked about doing “quality work” and what that meant. As Hannah swept, she said, “I’m so excited to share with Farmer Charlotte all of the work that we did!”. We were able to see brand new baby mice that were less than 24 hours old! It was the perfect mix of productivity and relaxation.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged with playdough.  We used a variety of tools to cut the dough or pound it with a hammer.  We also used our fingers to poke holes into it.  We added some alphabet letters to stamp into it.

Then, we spent some time by the habitrail! We pulled out rainbow mats, stairs/slide mat and the big square tumble mat, to climb on and jump off or crawl through.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our Tuesday by talking about height during our PREK1 sign in! Each friend was asked to venture throughout the classroom, finding a peer who was shorter than they are. Then, we worked at writing their name. Most friends wrote their name with minimal help! Children acknowledged that they were writing “new to them” letters. For example, one peer shared, “I don’t write K’s that much!”—so we worked together to identify the specifics of the letter K before writing it!

Later on in group, we read, ‘Hey Little Ant’ which is a book from our MACK collection. It dives into the notion of looking at a situation from someone else’s point of view. There are two main characters in the story: an ant and a boy. Throughout the story, the ant gives the boy several reasons as to why he doesn’t want to be stepped on. We talked about height and the severe difference between the two characters.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

Today, we enjoyed a special activity making applesauce.  Everyone was offered a chance to help cut up one apple.  We each learned how to use our plastic “safety knife” to cut the apple slices into cubes.  We filled a pot with the apples all of our wee friends helped to cut up and we can’t wait to try it for snack! Yum!

IMG_2383IMG_2390IMG_2395IMG_2398IMG_2400

At the round table, we offered an imaginative play area for friends to continue to process what they learned while making the applesauce.  Play is an excellent way for kids to continue learning about something they have been exposed to.

Good Afternoon!

Halloween and pumpkins have been a hot topic lately so we used Jack-O-Lanterns as the headliner for our PREK1 sign in! Children looked at three different sized pumpkins and wrote their name under the tallest.

Later on in group, we continued using comparison words such as taller, shorter, heavier, and lighter as we read, ‘What Do You Do With A Tail Like This?’. We looked at several different animal features such as nose, mouth, tail, and ears. We saw just the feature, not the whole animal and had to guess which feature belonged to what animal.

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, lighter, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

IMG_0995IMG_0996IMG_1010

Today we explored how to use a scale.  We tried a variety of objects to contrast against each other from stones to puff balls.  We found that our heavier objects tipped the scale down.  We also found we could put similar objects on either side of the scale to balance it.  Many friends enjoyed taking things in and out and watching the scale tip up and down.  Many of our kids seemed to have a good grasp of what was happening and why as they finished exploring!

IMG_2276IMG_2291IMG_2260

In the art center friends explored some new art materials for collage.  Several kids became interested in creating a checkerboard pattern and then adding the sequins in the middle on each square, creating a very symmetrical collage.  Others took a more layered and asymmetrical approach.  Both were great and the kids loved making their collages.

IMG_1008IMG_2287

PREK2:  In group we talked about things that were heavy and things that were light.  We chose an object from the bowl and then decided if the object we picked was heavy or light.  Our teacher recorded what we thought on the board.
