Good afternoon!

We started our morning off by dancing with rhythm sticks and silk scarves.  We tapped our sticks to “Ants Go Marching” and shook our scarves along to “Shake Your Sillies Out.”

IMG_4510(1)IMG_4512(1)IMG_4522(3)IMG_4524(1)IMG_4526(1)IMG_4529(1)

We then made our way outside for a sensory play activity with playdough and various tools. Our friends used playdough cutting tools to cut into or make shapes in their playdough. Some friends used their imaginative play skills to pretend that the playdough was “mac n’ cheese” or “broccoli.”

Good Afternoon!

The traffic light symbol was the focus for today’s PREK1 sign in activity. Children observed two different images and chose the correct representation for a traffic light! We talked about what the colors red, yellow, and green represent when we see them on a traffic light.

Science: K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc.

We read, ‘The Great Pig Escape’ in PREK1 group today. It was a comical fiction story where a group of pigs escaped their owners after finding out they were being sent to the market. They escaped on a bus and travelled down to Florida! The book must’ve struck a cord because several friends journaled about the characters and main events of the story! We love when children are able to take an experience or book and transfer their new understanding and knowledge into words and drawings!

IMG_9354(5)IMG_9348(6)IMG_9339(6)

Outside we explored natural objects through water play.  There have been a lot of kids interested in all of the new leaves and plants growing in the yard.  Since many of the plants need to be looked at rather than picked, we created play around natural materials that the kids could explore.  This way, kids could still have the opportunity to gain whatever learning experiences they had been seeking.  Friends made soups for each other, animal homes, stick spoons or bridges, stone islands and hideouts for their animals to “camouflage” so as to stay safe from predators!  What a great vocabulary for 3-4 year old imaginative play!

Happy Monday!

We kicked off our week by completing PREK1 sign in where children were asked to write a way that we move our bodies. Responses varied from walk to run to fly to twirl! A few children worked with a teacher to spell out their action while other friends kid spelled their word by writing the sounds that they heard.

Science: K.3.2 Investigate that things move in different ways, such as fast, slow, etc.

IMG_9127(6)IMG_9124(7)IMG_9129(4)

Later on in PREK1 group, we read ‘Tortoise and Hare’ which is from our MACK collection. Throughout the story, we learn all about the two main characters and how vastly different they are! Tortoise moves his body slowly throughout the day, taking his sweet time to do every single thing while Hare moves fast, fast, fast! An older peer shared, “I’m kind of in between. I can move fast but I can do things slow too!”. We all came to the conclusion that it’s nice when we’re able to find a balance.

IMG_9191(5)IMG_9192(7)

We explored how objects move at our welcome activity this morning.  Friends used pipes to make a structure.  Next they tried putting puff balls or marbles through their creation.  Several friends discovered that the heavier marbles moved through the pipes better.  Friends tried different shapes and noticed whether the marbles moved easily through the pipes or if the marbles got hung up.  Friends experimented with solving these problems by moving their structure to get the balls to move, or making a different shape.  Some friends found they could add a T shaped connecter to make the marble come out in the middle of the pope.  Kids used creative problem solving, critical thinking and cooperation as they explored these ideas.

IMG_9085(6)IMG_9067(5)IMG_9063(6)IMG_9080(6)IMG_9091(5)

Several kids added to their bean journals this morning.  Our class observed the changes in the plants since we last looked at them.  We found that most of the plants now had three parts.  We could see roots, a stem and leaves! Depending on our developmental level, we dictated our observations, or used our kids spelling to sound out the words we wanted to write.

Happy Friday!

PREK1 kiddos ended their week by talking about their favorite season and why! Here are some of the responses:

“Spring because it’s usually not too hot or too cold.”

“Summer because I play with my sister at our water table.”

“Winter because I get to go sledding and it’s the best thing ever!”

“Summer because it’s so warm and there’s always fun things to do like go to the playground.”

“Winter because it snows!”

“Summer because it’s good for swimming.”

Needless to say, we are a fan of all types of weather and the activities that we are allowed to explore!

Our beans have taken off in the last day or so! Several friends grabbed their bag off of the window and observed the growth of their bean at the island. After adding another entry, we talked about the physical change in their bean and documented it in their journal.

Good Afternoon!

**Please check your child’s daily sheet to see if they are in need of sunscreen. Please only bring lotion (no aerosol). Thanks!

The welcome activity this morning allowed children to explore the tuff tray where various wooden pieces were made available. A few friends were able to extend their idea, using majority of the tuff tray. Dax utilized the entire tray right before we went outside, sharing, “It’s a forest!”. He set up his pieces all around the tray, placing ‘trees’ all around the tray. We loved this open ended activity that allowed us to team up with our peers.

IMG_8853(6)IMG_8862(6)IMG_8880(6)

What a fantastic morning to be outside! We opened up our new water table which children flocked to instantly. So much so that we decided to put water in the tuff tray and offer another water opportunity at the art table! It was a great place for friends to cool off in the shade while enjoying a water play experience.

Good Afternoon!

We set up a welcome activity that revolved around magnatiles. We added magnetic people and bells to the tuff tray and children got right to work building various structures, mostly houses! Children used the bells to place around the perimeter of their house. There were so many interesting creations that friends built with one of their favorite materials, with a few added items!

The rest of our morning was spent exploring various activities such as the art easel. A few friends painted several pictures, working with different paint colors. We beat the rain and headed out for the rest of the morning where we were able to run around, getting out a ton of energy!

We took our first trip to the farm today! We spent a lot of time naturally exploring gross motor movement!  In the woods, kids have opportunities to move their bodies in ways they do not anywhere else.  Kids practiced picking up and balancing very long sticks.  They loved trying to pick up the longest one.  They also enjoyed working together to carry long sticks down the path.  This took a great deal of coordination, team work and balance.  They also used the long sticks as fishing poles at the pond and made a game of using them to pick up leaves off the pond bottom.  Kids get such a deep understanding of how their bodies,  and the objects they are manipulating are moving in space in these environments.  This is an experience that is often lacking in modern early childhood settings.  When kids explore movement in these ways, it affects the whole brain in its ability to integrate all of the different parts.  It is hard to imagine that spending time balancing on logs, hanging upside-down or using a long stick to pick up a leaf out of the water could effect children’s ability to focus, problem solve and use higher level executive function, but science supports evidence that it does.

IMG_6886(6)IMG_6894(6)IMG_6897(5)IMG_6916(7)IMG_6918(6)IMG_6957(7)IMG_6946(7)IMG_6901(7)IMG_6866(6)IMG_6876(5)IMG_6930(7)

If you are interested in reading more about these concepts, I highly recommend the book “Balanced and Barefoot, How Unrestricted Outdoor Play Makes for Strong, Confident and Capable Children”, which can be found on Amazon!

Breakfast– Overnight oatmeal with cinnamon and fresh strawberries/apples.

Lunch– Farm fresh scrambled eggs with whole wheat flatbread, fresh pineapple/cantaloupe, and fresh carrots/cucumber.

PM snack– Air popped popcorn with butter and raisins.

Wee Sprout– Fresh cucumber/carrots/pepper.

Good Afternoon!

Several friends began their morning looking at books on the reading steps.

IMG_4193(3)IMG_4195(4)IMG_4196(4)

We then listened to and acted out the motions to the See The Bunnies Sleeping? song.

IMG_4206(3)IMG_4207(4)

We then listened to Miss Bekah read a book called What Makes A Rainbow? by Betty Swartz.  As you read the page of each color, a piece of ribbon comes out that matches the color on the page until you have all of the colors of the rainbow. We then headed into the kitchen to draw with markers that Miss Bekah taped together to draw with all of the rainbow colors simultaneously.
