Happy Friday Eve!

We read, ‘Frog and Toad: Ice Cream’ in K/PREK1 group. It led into a discussion about seasons. Mack immediately said, “We’d eat ice cream outside probably in the summer!”

After we finished the story, we gathered in a circle on the floor with four laminated sheets in the middle of the group. On each sheet read one of the four seasons. We put all of the small laminated squares in a pile and as each friend chose a square, they put it in the appropriate season!

Some of the squares had snow related events which friends put in the winter category while the fall activities were about pumpkins and leaves. When we finished, each season had six activities that had been placed on the mats.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g., colors, shapes, opposites).

IMG_4334IMG_4340

In PREK2 group, friends worked together to place the numbers 1 through 20 in order! Children were able to identify the number as well as where it came in the number line.

IMG_3806IMG_3805IMG_3803

Teacher Tom’s blog post from a few days back revolved around dramatic play and how children navigate it. There’s dramatic play happening all around our classroom: in the habitrail area, at the art table, on the building rug. Friends are always inserting their imagination into their play—it’s what makes it relevant and meaningful to them because they’re taking control of the scenario and play experience.

“I’m fairy,” she told me. Then before I had a chance to respond, she added with wide open eyes, “A real fairy.”

“I’m a firefighter.” “I’m a gorilla.” “I’m a princess.” “I’m the fastest runner in the world.”

One can also think of it as children telling themselves aspirational stories about themselves in the present tense. Indeed, when a child declares, “I’m a fairy” then flits away, she becomes a fairy and only a cruel adult would tell her different. We chuckle as if it’s a kind of childish nonsense, but I invite my fellow adults to consider taking her at her word. When she says, “I’m a fairy,” believe her.

Good Afternoon!

We read, ‘Stick Man’ in K/PREK1 group! Mack realized really quickly that the book is full of rhyming words. We identified words that rhymed throughout the story.

When the story was done, we played a memory game using opposite words. First, we had a conversation about the word ‘opposite’ and took time to define it.

This group of children LOVE a good memory game! Some of the opposite words we found were in/out, up/down, open/close, and fast/slow.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g., colors, shapes, opposites).

IMG_4306IMG_4302IMG_4303

A new theme was added to the housekeeping area this morning: superheroes! Friends are all about using their imagination, fairytales, and fictional play.

Insert: interest in superheroes! Superhero attire was added to the housekeeping area along with a unique hand scanner that children can use.

A group of friends have been interested in robots so Miss Annastecia started a robot art project with them using cardboard. Children were able to have an ongoing conversation throughout the experience on what they should add to the robot. They are in the process of making it and once it’s complete, they’ll use paper mache to cover the robot!

We thought maybe if we decorate our classroom, Spring would come much faster. Smile Some of our butterflies are hanging close to the entryway of the classroom for everyone’s enjoyment.

Happy Monday!

First reminder: Wee Friends will be closed on Friday, April 15th for Good Friday.

Evie and Mack were asked to draw a line from the number to the matching number word. Once they did this, they had to write a number and number word that wasn’t used in the problems above.

K.NS.2: Write whole numbers from 0 to 20 and recognize number words from 0 to 10.

IMG_3491

We read, ‘Froggy’s Lemonade Stand’ in K/PREK1 group. If you’ve read any Froggy story, you know they use a ton of various ending punctuation! We started off by identifying different punctuation marks in the story as well as talking about when each punctuation mark is used.

Afterwards, we read four sentences on the board. Children worked together to figure out what punctuation mark should be by determining if the sentence was a statement, question, or a heightened voice/excited statement.

K.W.6.2B: Punctuation- Recognizing and naming end punctuation.
