Reminder:  Wee Friends will be closed next Monday, September 2nd for Labor Day!  Thank you.

Good Afternoon!

This morning the friends began in the housekeeping area.  They were setting out the plates and using their imaginative play skills as they were pretending to wash their hands in the sink.  Milo dressed up in dress-up hat and accessorized with a purse, Eleanor worked at putting on her dress up shoes and another friend played with the baby bottles.

IMG_2526(3)IMG_2535(3)IMG_2531(3)IMG_2533(3)IMG_2539(3)

Several of us then went to over to climb on the habi-trail and go down the slide.

IMG_2541(3)IMG_2551(3)IMG_2548(3)

We headed outside earlier to beat the heat.  We scooped in the sandbox, pushed the bikes down the hill, rode the teeter-totter, and played in the rock area; picking up rocks with our hands.

IMG_2554(3)IMG_2568(3)IMG_2558(3)IMG_2565(1)IMG_2564(3)IMG_2575(2)

We headed in quite a bit earlier before lunch was ready, so we danced with our dancing scarves.

IMG_2584(3)IMG_2585(2)

Miss Tami bought us in an unopened cardboard box.  We were very interested in what was inside. When Miss Bekah opened the box, there were 3 boxes of Mix or Match Magnetic Animal sets.  We have a dinosaur, farm animal and jungle animal set.  The friends enjoyed working to build their animals using the matching pieces or mixing them up to create their own unique animal.  They love them!  Thank you.

Good Afternoon!

We kicked off our day in PREK1 by completing sign in before lunch! This week, we’ll be talking about community helpers and today, children had to identify the community helper that delivers our mail.

Later on in PREK1, we read ‘Corduroy’ in group. In the story, there were two community helpers that friends were able to point out: a salesperson and a night watch helper (who we identified as a ‘police officer for a store’ by group members).

Social Studies: K.2.1 Give examples of people who are community helpers (inside the classroom and outside the classroom) and describe how they help us.

Thankfully, we have a flexible schedule in the morning and so we decided to go outside early to enjoy the weather before it got too hot. Immediately, friends started sprinting around the circle to get some energy out.

We got out bikes along with balls and the hoop. Children flocked right to the hoop as they all tried making baskets. We saw a ton of persistence as children kept trying to make baskets. It take a lot of patience, timing, and hand eye coordination to get the ball through the hoop. Amelia got the hang of it and every time she made a basket, she’d scream, “I did it!”.

Watching our kids at play outside is a calming and reassuring experience. Not only are they getting loads of fresh air but with the amount of outside time our kids get each day, they can really get involved in a wide arrange of pretend play. Two four year old girls spent all morning long in the log area. They decided to play “police” as they moved the logs around the space, setting the space up for their perfect play setting. Eventually, a few peers joined into their play. There’s no set script or set of rules that children have to follow outside: they can just be!

Happy Friday!

A welcome activity was set out at the circle table that instantly drew in Ryan. He used tongs to place various sized puff balls onto a wooden rainbow. Arthur immediately wanted to join him and friends started gathering around to watch. So, I headed to the basement to see what other materials friends could use.

IMG_9412IMG_9423

I brought up marbles and small bells which both peaked children’s interest.

When we’re setting up an activity, making sure that we keep offering new and engaging materials helps to maintain interest!

IMG_9425IMG_9431

Amelia stayed engaged from start to finish as she used rubber tongs to place one bell at a time on the wooden rainbow. She started on the left side of the rainbow and went left to right until she finished!

PREK 2: Today during group we read the last scenario in the book “What Should Darla do?”  The kids all felt that Darla should ask her sister before she took the glitter glue rather than just take it.  Afterward we thought of about times we had argued with a brother, sister, cousin or friend, and how we could help to resolve the situation.

Our journaling group has been coming up with all kinds of interesting things to journal about! They are also starting to be able to spell their name verbally as a teacher writes it!  Way to go Wee Friends!

Good Afternoon!

A friend started off our morning by asking for the “Bear Hunt” song. Our friends all chose a bear from the basket and marched around the front with them.

IMG_2388(3)IMG_2392(2)IMG_2396(3)

Some of our friends then brought down the shape sorting houses. They worked on matching the shape blocks to the correct shape slot.

IMG_2401(3)IMG_2402(3)IMG_2403(3)

A few friends got out the doctor tools and used their imaginative skills to pretend that they were doctors. They made sure to check their eyes and ears with the tools!

IMG_2436(3)IMG_2439(3)IMG_2440(3)

We then made our way into the kitchen for some art. We painted with q-tips and watched as the different colors mixed together on our paper. We all made beautiful masterpieces!

IMG_2441(3)IMG_2442(2)IMG_2444(3)IMG_2446(2)IMG_2450(3)IMG_2447(2)IMG_2451(2)

We made our way outside to engage in our favorite activities like scooping up sand in the sandbox and pushing the trucks around.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 kiddos came to the sign in board where we talked about our neighborhoods. I prompted them with the question, “When you walk out of your front door and walk into your neighborhood, what is something that you see?”. Some responses were trees, a house, and nature grass.

Social Studies: K.3.6 Identify and compare similarities and differences in families, classmates, neighbors and neighborhoods, and ethnic and cultural groups.

IMG_9182(4)IMG_9178(5)IMG_9190(4)

Later on in PREK1 group, we read a few pages out of one of my favorite books, ‘Here and There’. The pictures are super cool and throughout the book, we learn about differences between countries such as groceries, riding to school, and nature. Today, we focused on nature and what the outdoors look like in different countries. Because we were talking about our neighborhoods, we discussed how different our neighborhood looks compared to Borneo where the Orangutang lives! I asked, “Do you see Orangutangs in your neighborhoods?!”. Children of course laughed at this which prompted a conversation about animals that we do see in our neighborhoods.

We created a web where we documented different things we see in our neighborhoods! One conclusion we came to: squirrels are very prominent in our area! Smile

Today was a great example of Wee Friends following their own interests!

It was a musical morning at Wee Friends!  Several friend’s used some magnets, some stools and their imaginations to create the perfect props for a music concert.  The friends took turns watching and performing.  Sometimes they all performed together.  One friend said to his teachers “We are singing songs of the world!”.

IMG_9197(3)

Other friends have been on a puzzle kick!  I’m pretty sure every big floor puzzles has been put together this week.  Today two of our three year old’s tried a 60 piece puzzle with success!

IMG_9159(4)IMG_9231(3)

In the art center Paige drew portraits.  She made one of Miss Mindy and Miss Linsey.  She was careful to check to see that she had the right eye color staring deep into our eyes to be sure!

IMG_9215(3)IMG_9213(4)

Outside was a construction zone as ALL of the big building blocks were dragged out and used to create!  Older friends did a great job jumping in to help younger friends move heavy blocks and problem solve!

IMG_9304(3)IMG_9301(3)IMG_9300(4)IMG_9299(2)

…so many different ideas and interests with just as many ways to follow them!

Happy Wednesday!

Today was recycle day, so many of us stood at the windows and watched the recycle truck go down the street and empty the bins.

IMG_2244(3)IMG_2245(2)IMG_2246(2)

Charlotte then heard the song, Shake Your Sillies Out and asked for the dancing scarves.  We all shook our scarves while we danced to the music.

IMG_2268(3)IMG_2271(3)IMG_2273(3)IMG_2276(3)IMG_2279(3)IMG_2284(3)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in the birdseed/rice sensory table.  We were busy using our hands, spoons and cups to scoop up the mixture and pour into a different container.

IMG_2322(3)IMG_2323(3)IMG_2329(3)IMG_2338(3)IMG_2334(3)IMG_2315(3)

We then headed outside to enjoy another beautiful day!  We enjoyed building with the Outlast blocks and driving our cars down the ramp in addition to our favorite activities.

Good afternoon!

Our friends started off their morning by climbing on the habi-trail and taking turns to go down the slide.

IMG_2157(3)IMG_2153(3)IMG_2152(3)IMG_2156(3)

Some of our friends then went on to build with the BounceBlocks. They stacked the blocks to make towers to stand on while holding onto the bars of the habi-trail. Charlotte discovered that she could carry 3 blocks all at once!

IMG_2160(3)IMG_2171(2)IMG_2168(2)

We then made our way into the kitchen for some loose parts play with Slot-A-Shape builders. A teacher showed us how the pieces could connect and they all tried to do it themselves.  We also talked about the different colors and shapes of them.

IMG_2208(3)IMG_2204(2)IMG_2210(3)IMG_2211(3)IMG_2212(3)IMG_2207(3)IMG_2206(3)

We then headed outside to engage in some of our favorite activities. Our friends rode or pushed their bikes up and down the hill, used tools to scoop the sand in the sandbox, or simply walked around the backyard to enjoy the beautiful weather we’ve been having.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 group focused on two physical traits that everyone has: eye color and hair color! For PREK1 sign in, children had to identify their hair color and eye color.

Later on in group, we put our findings on a graph. We talked about what graphs are used for and were able to identify the group with the highest number—brown eyes and blonde hair had the most in our group!

Social Studies: K.3.6 Identify and compare similarities and differences in families, classmates, neighbors and neighborhoods, and ethnic and cultural groups.

We offered a special activity this morning for those who wanted to see what families look like for friends in our classroom.  We used black paper shapes to make a house.  Then we chose colored squares to match the family members who live in our home.  We chose as a class to add ourselves to the household tally.  We also decided to include pets.

Mom=red  Dad=green  Brother=blue  Sister=purple  Dog=brown  Cat=yellow

PREK2: During group today we sang “the name song” and clapped the syllables for everyone’s name in the circle.  We read the first scenario in the book “What Would Darla Do?” which outlined a conflict between siblings at the breakfast table.  We chose as a group what Darla should do to solve the problem.  I am proud to say that most of our friends felt Darla should move to another seat rather than push her sister off of the seat she wantedSmile . At the end of the story we thought about meal time at our home.  We added something we could do to help at meal time to a class list.
