Happy Friday!

We celebrated Paige and Katherine’s last day at Wee Friends! Paige and Katherine have both been at Wee Friends since they were babies! Not only are we going to miss them in our classroom but we’re also going to miss their families who have been apart of OUR family for years. We’re excited for them to head to big kid school in the fall!

Good Afternoon!

This morning we were offered an open ended activity with play dough, leafy branches and pine cones.  The sky was the limit.  The child led theme that caught on in the group today was island building.  Friends created large islands covered with trees or a group of small islands.  They named their islands as well.  A couple that come to mind are “Tornado Island” and “Shade Island”.  We added some animals at the request of friends who wanted their islands to be inhabited.  Several kids chose to work in pairs which we always encourage.  It’s a great way to cooperatively and creatively problem solve, a wonderfully important skill!

Good afternoon!

We flip-flopped our day by starting our morning with outdoor time to beat the heat! Our friends explored several water play stations. We engaged with: Interstar Connectors and measuring cups at the water table, leaves, mulch, frogs and snakes at the Tuff tray, and dinosaurs and sponges at the water tins. It was such a fun way to cool off.

We then headed back inside to play for a bit before lunch time. Our friends explored Interstar Connectors inside, Magnetic Mix-and-Match Animals or books at the reading steps.

Happy Wednesday!

This morning we engaged with a loose parts activity with wooden colored sorting people and rings.  Friends were also given a clear tube.  We used the tube to put our rings through to string them. We also used the rings to look through and to put around our peg people and stack them to “hide” the people.

Good Afternoon!

We had a wide variety of child led activities pop up throughout the day.

One of our activities actually began with  a redirection, thinking of what we could do rather than toss sand.  Making meatballs was the alternative idea which led to a discussion about spaghetti and meatballs.  This lead to a whole activity centered around spaghetti and meatballs that no longer had anything to do with sand.  We got a little math lesson on top of our creative problem solving and social emotional learning.  We worked to divide the meatballs up evenly in each person’s bowl.  We practiced taking one ball at a time for each bowl, counting as we went.  We found we could have five meatballs per bowl when we divided them evenly.  We had a remainder of two…which we though it best to just put awaySmile  This is how child lead interests end in meaningful learning experiences!

Our oldest girls finished their paper Mache bowls today giving them a colorful painted surface

IMG_5947IMG_5948

Another group of kids were interested in recording classroom information.  One friend took a tally of everyone’s favorite vegetable.  Another found out what everyone’s favorite fruit was.  While working on this activity, our kids practiced math, spelling/letter sounds and writing.

Good Afternoon!

We were busy in the kitchen making FOUR new batches of playdough! Friends took turns at the island helping measure ingredients and mix the batter. We made four different colors: teal, purple, red, and orange! After the second batch, we were contemplating what color to make next and we voted on two colors: orange and purple. Purple ended up winning 7-6 but since it was so close, we just ended up making both colors! We worked on our measurement skills as children helped measure ingredients such as flour, salt, water, and cream of tartar. We can’t wait to play with our new playdough!

IMG_5819IMG_5820

The welcome activity allowed children to explore one of their favorite sensory experiences: kinetic sand! Utensils such as hammers and rolling pins were placed in the middle of the tuff tray. One friend started building a river to where a teacher hurried up and added materials like lizards and frogs to the tray for children to build upon as interests popped up!

IMG_5784IMG_5785IMG_5787

We’ve been trying to soak up these ‘not too warm’ summer mornings so once we got outside, children wanted to get right to work watering the garden! We love how helpful our group is. Friends have been talking about how the plants are changing; getting taller and spurting more veggies!

Good afternoon!

Our friends started their morning by looking through the fish tank glass to watch our goldfish swim around. We also danced to “Spin Again” by Jim Gill and several other songs with our friends.

IMG_8363(2)IMG_8364(2)IMG_8374(1)IMG_8369(2)

We then made our way into the kitchen for a chalk art activity. Our friends used different colored- chalk crayons to draw on black paper. Our colors looked so vibrant against the contrast of the black paper! We talked about the names of the chalk colors we were using.

IMG_8385(2)IMG_8387(2)IMG_8388(2)IMG_8391(2)IMG_8390(2)

We then headed outside to enjoy the wonderful morning weather. We rode the balance bikes, sat down in the shade of the log house, crawled on the balance beams, watered the vegetables in the garden, and explored the two water table stations.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged in the rice/birdseed sensory table.  We were busy using plastic egg halves, spoons and stacking cups to scoop and pour the mixture into another cup or back into the table.  We also explored the plastic bugs and identified them while holding them up to show Miss Bekah.  One friend found an ant, while another friend found a beetle.

IMG_8268(2)IMG_8269(1)IMG_8276(2)IMG_8277(1)IMG_8274(2)IMG_8279(2)

The friends also worked together while building with Magna-Tiles.

IMG_8283(2)IMG_8284(2)IMG_8287(2)IMG_8293(2)IMG_8294(2)

We then climbed on the habi-trail, made a stack with our BounceBlocks to stand on or laid or rocked on the rainbow mats.

IMG_8285(2)IMG_8302(2)IMG_8311(2)IMG_8313(2)IMG_8316(1)

God Afternoon!

This morning we enjoyed a sensory exploration activity “rainbow spaghetti”.  Several friends volunteered to help make it.  We added cooked spaghetti to five bags then added a few drops of food coloring to each.  Next, friends helped massage the color into the noodles.  When the spaghetti was fully dyed and cooled, we added it to the sensory tray to explore.  One small math/social emotional lesson that came up was a chat about dividing by four.  We talked about how to give each person an equal amount, so we divided the spaghetti into quarters.  I love that I can mix math and social emotional learning into one activity!

Happy Friday!

This morning we engaged in books on the reading steps.  We looked at our books independently or listened to Miss Tina read them to us.

IMG_8182(4)IMG_8183(1)IMG_8184(2)IMG_8221(2)

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with loose parts.  We had dominos, pom-poms, a wooden cup and bowl, a spoon and tongs.  We worked to strengthen our hand muscles while we used the tongs to pick up our pom-poms.  Several friends used their imaginative play skills and used the dominos as a telephone.  They touched the dots as if they were dialing and then put the domino up to their ears and said “hello.”

IMG_8185(2)IMG_8192(2)IMG_8189(2)IMG_8202(2)IMG_8191(2)IMG_8208(2)

We then headed outside to enjoy some fresh air.  We engaged with pom-poms in the water table and drew with markers at the art table.
