Good Afternoon!

Outside today, we offered a leaf collage art activity for older friends.  We found ways to arrange natural materials on our paper.  Friends added flowers, leaves, sticks and grass.  One friend even added a cicada skin found on a bush.

Younger friends worked on a large collaborative outdoor painting activity.

IMG_7681(8)IMG_7674(9)

One friend was curious about the sticky milkweed sap, wondering if it would work as glue.  Of course we tried it.  We found it did not work as well as regular glue mostly because we couldn’t get enough of it out of the plant.  We always encourage kids to try their ideas when ever possible.  We believe it’s important for them to follow their curiosity.  That is what teaches kids HOW to learn.

Inside we created an obstacle course for friends to move their bodies in different ways and work on balance.  Our younger friends also worked on the new skill of keeping a place in line as they followed the course.  Older friends worked on their counting skills as they counted their trampoline jumps.

Good Afternoon!

**Wee Friends will be closed Monday, September 1 for Labor Day. Thanks!

This morning we offered a loose parts activity with blocks and popsicle sticks.  The activity was open ended.  Our kid’s job was to explore it.  What many friends became interested in was the idea of balance.  It became a group endeavor to find different ways to balance the pieces.  This activity took patience, attention, slow controlled movements and creative problem solving.  It also took awareness of others work, as tray bumps could topple other projects.  A great deal of learning took place as kids challenged themselves to balance objects.

Albert, one of our graduating friends, got to pick something he wanted to do for his last day.  He picked painting.  He created several paintings of card, trucks and people to take home.  Everyone will miss your lunch table jokes!

Happy Friday!

This morning, a group of friends worked on building a variety of structures with our notch blocks.  They first built a truck with windows in from and back.  Next they built a house using a piece across the top as the beginning of a roof.  We offered a piece of fabric to help with the roof project,  which was happily received!  Building three dimensionally is a wonderful developmental activity.  It creates a situation where kids need to visualize a problem as well as the solutions in a three dimensional way.  That process pushes kid’s critical thinking and creative problem solving skills.  Working on projects like this in groups offers the opportunity to develop communication, group problem solving and cooperation to produce a shared result.

Good afternoon!

Our friends started their morning by exploring Interstar connectors and the magnetic mix-and-match animal pieces in the front area of our classroom.

IMG_9311(2)IMG_9310(2)

We then made our way into the kitchen for a bead, pipe cleaner and pattern card activity. One friend used their fine motor skills to thread the beads through their pipe cleaner and repeated it two more times to make a total of three bead threads!

IMG_9330(2)IMG_9332(3)IMG_9336(4)IMG_9331(2)

We brought down the climb & play soft mats for our friends to engage with. We put our gross motor skills to use as we climbed, rolled or sat on the blocks.

IMG_9342(2)IMG_9340(4)IMG_9347(2)

We headed outside to get a kickstart on this warm day. We drew with markers at the art table, enjoyed the shade with a friend on the stage, rode teeter-totters with a friend or sibling, explored the water table and dipped paintbrushes in cups of water to paint the chalk-covered stepping stones.

Good afternoon!

This morning we engaged in a loose parts activity with pom-poms and dominos.  We worked on using the spoon and tongs to pick them up or used our hands to put them into our bowl or cup.

IMG_9259(2)IMG_9260(2)IMG_9261(2)IMG_9263(2)

We then headed outside to engage in a variety of activities.  Cece went down the slide on her tummy, a friend engaged in cooking in the housekeeping kitchen, several friends engaged in the water play activity, Charlotte and Eleanor helped water the garden plants, Eleanor drew with chalk on the chalkboard and several friends engaged in scooping and pouring the sand in the sandbox.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we added four different shape components to the light table.  Each could be used to make a hexagon when combined.  Arthur enjoyed this activity and found ways to make hexagons out of triangles, diamonds and trapezoids.  He even figured out how to make a hexagon out of a hexagon lined with trapezoids.  The possibilities were vast!

IMG_7192(6)

We offered a range of sensory and imaginative play options.  These experiences are valuable for all ages as they help regulate the nervous system, integrate the brain and provide open ended opportunities for imagination, creativity and social development.

IMG_7231(7)IMG_7232(7)IMG_7239(7)IMG_7236(7)

Just before heading outside, we danced together, explored instruments, and played music body movement games.  The group followed the prompts and acted out the songs together.

IMG_7268(7)IMG_7269(6)

Other friends worked on creative drawings and letter kid spelling.  Over all it was a busy and productive day!

Good Afternoon!

Several kids in class have been very into mixing different substances experimentally.  We have been trying some different things in response.  Today, we tried mixing baking soda and water to make silver polish.  The kids used tooth brushes to “polish their silver” in housekeeping.  They enjoyed the experimental element of mixing different amounts of water and baking soda, then seeing how it could polish the surface of their cups, bowls and tea pot.
