Good Afternoon!

Our PREK1 group members came to sign in this morning. Each child chose a card that had one of three things on it: a shape, letter, or color. We looked at the three categories that were available and friends chose which group their image belonged to!

Later on in PREK1 group, we focused on a second text genre today: poetry! We read ‘It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles’ and each friend chose one poem to read. One of the poems focused on an invisible friend which peaked the interest of a few of our friends! So much so that a few children journaled around the concept of being invisible.

K.DA.1: Identify, sort, and classify objects by size, number, and other attributes. Identify objects that do not belong to a particular group and explain the reasoning used.

K.RL.3.1: Recognize familiar narrative text genres (e.g. fiction, nonfiction, fairytales, poems).

This morning, we offered a new  “mixing experiment” since our interest in mixing ingredients to see what happens, is still strong in our group.  We tried flour, water and oatmeal today.  Friends described it as pancake batter or muffins as they mixed it.  Several kids enjoyed filling muffin tins and pretending to bake.  Other descriptive words included slimy, gooey, cold and bumpy.  These kinds of projects do many things for the development.  One thing these activities do is cause kids to focus their attention.  If you look at the pictures, you can see that intense focus on their faces.  Those are the moments kids are experiencing deep learning through experimentation and developing sustained attention.  The ability for sustained attention is a skill that is lacking among school age kids in a world emersed in technology.  The ability to focus attention is their first step in the ability to learn, retain knowledge, be observant and develop creative ideas of their own.

We had to come inside today because of an approaching rain storm.  When we came in, Arthur illustrated the rainstorm in a drawing.  We love to see our kids using art to represent things they are experiencing and thinking about.

Good Afternoon!

We began our morning in a few activities.  A friend was looking at books in the rocking chair and several other friends were busy on the habi-trail going down the slide.

IMG_1956IMG_1962IMG_1963IMG_1961

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in moon sand in a tuff tray.  We added shovels, digger trucks and animals to the table to enhance our experience.  An older friend was making molds of her tin pans.

IMG_1965IMG_1970IMG_1973IMG_1979

We then headed outside to engage in our favorite activities.

The babies enjoyed cooing, playing and smiling while on their playmat or sitting in their chair.

Happy Monday!

We kicked off the week by completing a PREK1 sign in where we identified specific characteristics of shapes in a group. As each group member came up to the board, they looked at a group of four shapes; three small circles and one large circle. Everyone chose the large circle as the shape that didn’t belong to the group because it was a different size!

Later on in group, we read ‘The Big Bad Wolf and Lil Wolf’. I shared that throughout the week, we’ll be reading stories from each of the four text genres. We listed the four text genres and almost immediately, a few friends shared that this specific book is a fiction story! We looked at just the cover and came up with several reasons why it is a fiction story.

Parent conversation suggestion: ask your PREK1 child during dinner or bedtime routine about the book they read today and what made it a fiction story!

Legos have been a strong interest lately.  We created a Lego work space on the building rug this morning so that all our curious builders could work on their projects in a group, sharing ideas as they went.  We had a lot of creative ideas including machines, cars with three rows of seats and a smoke stack for a jail.  Working with Legos is great for development.  It helps to increase attention span, think creatively, increase fine motor development, use critical thinking, problem solving skills and helps to increasing over-all executive function.  Working in a group allows kids to practice with social skills, social awareness and the sharing of ideas among peers.

PREK2:  In group we have been practicing different breathing exercises along with body movements to help calm our bodies.  We each tried to remember a breathing exercise and demonstrate that at group today.  We tried tire breath, bunny breath, rainbow breath, butterfly breathing and peanut butter and jelly legs.  Each exercise helps us stretch, move and align our bodies while using deep breathing.

Happy Friday!

We wrapped up our week talking about authors and illustrators and how they work together. I took an illustration out of the story for our PREK1 sign in, ‘I Don’t Want To Take A Bath!’. We read the book later on in group. Throughout the story, Little Tiger visited several animal friends to try to get away from taking a bath. Throughout his adventure, he gets even more dirty! We talked about how each illustration matches the authors words. Once we understood this, we looked at the illustration to see if we could see what the authors words might say!

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

This morning we engaged with our pegs and peg boards in the kitchen.  We worked on filling our peg boards with pegs and those of us who knew the colors identified them as they put them in their boards.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we worked on a group letter puzzle.  There has been a lot of interest in puzzles and in writing so we figured we would work on letter sounds and puzzles all at once!  Our teacher gave us a clue, making the letter’s sound.  Then we worked together to find both the letter and the square it fit inside.  We saw some great team work in our kids as they pieced together the alphabet puzzle.

Good Afternoon!

We continued talking about shapes for our PREK1 sign in today! Each group member came to the board where we walked through a series of steps.

First, children searched the board for their name. They identified the corresponding shape and then counted the sides of their shape. On a plate was a group of different numbers. They searched and found the correct number and taped their number inside of their shape. Eliza was surprised to learn that there were zero sides on a circle.

K.G.2: Compare shapes using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, and parts (e.g. number of sides, length of sides, and vertices).

Later on in group, we read a book titled, ‘The Way I Feel’ from our MACK collection. Throughout the story, the author and illustrator demonstrated how they work together to share the words AND the corresponding illustration. Each page had a specific feeling with a facial expression on a character. On a few pages, we looked at the characters facial expression to see if we could guess the emotion on that page!

We talked about different situations in our life that makes us feel a certain way. Our friends with siblings shared that sometimes they feel jealous when their other sibling is getting attention from their parents and they’re not—so relatable and true!

MACK WEEK 3: Children will learn to recognize and name emotions in themselves and others.

K.RL.4.1: Describe the relationship between illustrations and the story in which they appear.

There has been interest in collecting and playing with leaves outside lately, so we thought it would be a great time to do this leaf printing art project.  Kids chose their favorite leaf shapes.  They painted their leaves and then pressed them onto their paper to make prints of the leaves.  Some kids experimented with painting blocks of different shades of green on the same leaf or painting compound leaves in different shades.  This made for some interesting prints!

IMG_0234IMG_0239IMG_0243

Another interest that popped up for the morning was solving puzzles.  Some kids have been able to put together our most difficult pattern play puzzle.  Several kids got interested in trying more difficult puzzles and challenging themselves.  We saw some great team work as kids helped each other with struggles or gave each other pointers.
