Happy Wednesday!

Everyone was excited to finally taste the long awaited potatoes from this garden season.  After digging up our potatoes yesterday, it was time to prepare them!  Older friends got to dig them up, so younger friends got a chance to get involved in the potato project.  Everyone who was interested got a chance to scrub the potatoes with a sponge until they were very VERY clean.  They hardly needed to be peeled!  It was voted on among our big kids that mashed would be the best way to prepare them (even though I  strongly advocated for soup, I was wildly over ruled).  At lunch time everyone got to taste the fresh mashed potatoes!  Needless to say the potato bowls were scraped clean!

Big kids enjoyed several group games of go-fish on this rainy wet morning!

Our PREK2 journal group has been learning and growing!  Name recognition is really catching on among all our young friends!  A few friends have started to write part of or all of their names.  Everyone has wonderfully creative descriptions of what they are drawing too!

Good afternoon!

This morning we made music with the xylophones and pianos. We also sat on the reading steps to read books on our own.

IMG_5784IMG_5790IMG_5793IMG_5797IMG_5796IMG_5802

We made our way to the kitchen to engage with loose parts play. We stacked rings on top of a wooden person on our trays.

IMG_5818IMG_5820IMG_5816IMG_5825

We enjoyed some of our favorite activities outside. We rode bikes, practiced our throwing skills with balls, played in the sandbox, and poured rocks on our construction vehicles.

Good Afternoon!

Today we got into the science of opposites as we conducted a sink or float experiment.  Older friends examined the objects we were testing ahead of time and made “predictions” about what would sink and what would float.  Next we tested the objects.  Based on our developmental level we either talked about our findings or recoded them ourselves in an “Experimental log”.  Last we drew conclusions and talked about anything we learned. Some friends observed that even though some of the objects felt light weight in our hands, they still sank.  We noticed that all of the objects with this quality were made of metal.   One of our friends observed that the feather floated at first but later it started to sink.  She noticed the same phenomenon with the puff ball.  We talked about what had changed and after some discussion concluded that the two objects had absorbed some water.  This could be easily tested and proven by squeezing the wet puff ball.  Solid science!

In the garden today it was finally dry enough to excavate our potatoes.  Older friends dug up the potatoes with shovels.  Arthur got to have the honorary job of putting the uprooted potatoes into a bucket event though he is a younger friend since he helped find all the shovels for the project.

Happy Monday!

We kicked off our Monday by talking about groups with similarities for PREK1 sign in. There were three four sided shapes and children had to determine which shape (triangle, circle, or rectangle) fit into the group above.

K.RV.2.2: Identify and sort pictures of objects into categories (e.g. colors, shapes, opposites).

IMG_9526IMG_9531IMG_9532

Today was an opposite day!  We used black and white to talk about opposites.  In the art center we made black and white art.  We chose black and white objects and tried gluing them on their opposite back grounds, creating interesting and contrasting compositions.

IMG_9543IMG_9547IMG_9538IMG_9553IMG_9556

For our welcome activity we tried a “same or different” exercise with black and white.  We could choose to put the black and white objects on a black or white back ground.  We talked about whether we had chosen the same color back ground or a different color back ground.

IMG_9505IMG_9561

We enjoyed  recalling our same/different and opposites conversations during play with some black and white beans in the sensory bin.

IMG_9539IMG_9528

PREK2: During group time today we passed around a stone and a feather.  We talked about the differences between the objects.  We noticed that the stone was “heavy and cold” while the feather was “light, soft and warm”.  hey were opposites.  We read the story ‘The Same But Different’.  Lastly, we looked at the board as a class and determined whether all of the paired shapes were the same or different.

Lunch: Whole wheat pasta with marinara and mozzarella cheese, fresh watermelon, and cucumber/carrots.

Happy Monday!

Our older friends engaged in dress up hats and working to dress their baby dolls into the outfit they chose.

IMG_5723IMG_5724

Our younger friends were busy on the reading step pulling the books off the shelf and choosing one to look at.  Eleanor also engaged in activities on the Zany Zoo Activity box.

IMG_5725IMG_5727IMG_5737

The older friends went into the kitchen with Miss Tina to decorate our pumpkin with markers.

IMG_5742IMG_5743IMG_5744

Eleanor mastered climbing up onto the habi-trail today.  While she was up on it, she stood and looked out the window and crawled over to work at moving the beads on the wall maze board.

IMG_5746IMG_5748IMG_5753IMG_5756IMG_5759

Even though the fall air was a little colder this morning, it didn’t stop us.  We enjoyed going down the slide, climbing up the rock paths and tossing the colorful leaves in the air.

Happy Friday!

This morning the friends began in the housekeeping area.  Eliza engaged with a baby doll and worked to put an outfit on it, Ben and 2 other friends engaged with the fruits and veggies and put them into the counter and sink to get them ready to wash.  Eleanor pulled herself up to stand at the Duplo shelf and looked into the mirror while holding a ball to observe her reflection.

IMG_5653IMG_5662IMG_5681IMG_5660IMG_5684

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with watercolor cakes.  We learned the process of having to get our brush wet with water, then rub our brush on the color cake we wanted to get the paint on our brush, then cleaning our brush in the water before getting another color.  We made colorful masterpieces and really enjoyed painting with them.

IMG_5691IMG_5694IMG_5693

We were so happy that the rain stopped so we could get outside to play.  We rode on the teeter totters, pushed the construction trucks around in the rock area and cooked in the play kitchen.

IMG_5700IMG_5705IMG_5707IMG_5710

Hello Families! It was a gray rainy day outside and a busy day inside at Wee Friends.

We made some seasonal black and orange play dough to explore in the art center this morning!  Everyone has been talking a lot about Halloween, so it seems to be a strong interest in the classroom right now.  Our orange playdough was scented with pumpkin pie spice and we were able to make pretend pumpkin pies in little pie trays, then use a butter knife to cut the pie into pieces.  We got a chance to talk about cutting a pie in half and in quarters.  The black playdough was sprinkled with silver glitter like a night sky.  Everyone enjoyed using cookie cutters to cut out stars and nocturnal animals like owls and bats.

IMG_9345IMG_9341IMG_9360IMG_9342IMG_9380

We continued the seasonal theme in the sensory bin as well.  We enjoyed creating concoctions with our orange tinted water, bottles, eyedroppers, tongs and spiders.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we got down the stepping circles and liquid squares and made a path to the habi-trail steps for us to follow.

IMG_5555IMG_5556IMG_5554

We then headed into the kitchen to work on our patterning and sorting skills with wooden loose part circles and sticks.  We used a pattern card to follow and place the correct item that matched the picture we saw next on the card.

IMG_5591IMG_5588IMG_5590

We then engaged with our shape stackers and worked at stacking the shapes on their stacker pole.

IMG_5559IMG_5565IMG_5568IMG_5577

Outside we went down the slide, played with our older brother, walked around with trucks, and used a dustpan set to collect mulch.
