Happy Monday!

This morning we went on a bear hunt with our teddy bears while listening to the song.

IMG_9401IMG_9403IMG_9405t

We then engaged in making music with our bells and shaker instruments.

IMG_9418IMG_9419IMG_9424IMG_9426

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with pegs and pegboards.  We worked on stacking them in a tall tower or on our patterning skills to make an ABAB pattern with them.

IMG_9440IMG_9448IMG_9452IMG_9453IMG_9458IMG_9463IMG_9454IMG_9444[4]

We then headed out to the habi-trail area to toss the balls with Miss Bekah.  We first listened for our names to let us know it was our turn to toss our ball to Miss Bekah. She then worked with us on rhyming and we listened for a word that sounded like our name to take our turn.

Happy Monday!

PREK1 group came to sign in this morning. They were asked to choose a piece of paper from the bottom of the sign in board where each piece of paper had to a shape on it. They identified their shape and had to tape it under the shape name. A few older peers were able to identify the correct shape name by looking for the first letter sound in the word. For example, Hannah had the shape ‘hexagon’. She was able to find the word ‘hexagon’ because she knew the letter sound of ‘h’.

K.4.1: Identify and describe geometric objects: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, trapezoid, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, sphere, and cube.

This morning a wee friend asked if she could have a popsicle stick  so she could make her drawing into a puppet.  Of course we provided it, and since it was a great idea we decided to build on it.  We got out yarn, eye balls, tissue paper, beads and glue, offering creative ways to make puppets.  Several friends joined the puppet making activity immediately.  A couple of friends chose to use tape instead of glue so they could use them right away…great forethought!  Three of our older friends chose to put on a puppet show in the art center window for all of the kids who were working there!

IMG_4174IMG_4176

This morning we explored shapes as a welcome activity.  We found ways to arrange the shapes in interesting patterns on top of a mirror.  Some older friends enjoyed building smaller shapes into different larger shapes, like triangles build into squares of hexagons!

Happy Snowy Friday!

Today we celebrated a birthday!  Our friend Charlotte turned a year old.  We are so happy we were able to celebrate with you.  We hope you have a great birthday weekend!  Thank you for the delicious snack.

IMG_9337IMG_9319

We headed into the kitchen to paint with watercolor ice cubes.  We all loved watching the ice cube melt as we moved it around onto our papers to create our paintings using a variety of colors.

Happy Friday!

We enjoyed a creative morning in the art center making some abstract artwork.  We used colored glue to dot stripe and mix color on our paper.  Some chose to make images with the glue like sun shines and cars.  Others chose to experiment with how the colors mixed when layered.  They all turned out to be a lovely mixture of color and shape!

Adrian spent quite some time this morning creating a number with one hundred 0’s…which he did complete!  “I wonder what that number would be…” I said, to which Adrian replied in a matter of fact tone, “Oh, that’s a google plex”.  Upon looking this word up (which I admit was foreign to me) I found that he was correct.

Good Afternoon!

We started off our morning by grabbing our stuffed animals (bears) and listening to “Going on A Bear Hunt.” Our friends marched around the circle as we looked for bears! Some other friends decided they wanted to have a meal together in housekeeping. They grabbed bowls and fruit for friends to eat. Then, we used the colorful stepping squares to make a path for friends to walk on!

IMG_9255IMG_9256IMG_9261IMG_9302

Later, we engaged in sensory play with our sensory bin full of moon sand. Dax used a small cup to fill sand and said it was “food for shark.” Ben enjoyed filling up his bowls with his two shovels, then pouring it out like it was snowing! Lastly, friends got their gross motor muscles moving by crawling through our tunnel in the habi-trail area.

Good Afternoon!

PREK1 friends came to sign in where they had to identify a peer in class with a specific number of syllables in their name! Each child found their name and the number next to their name. Then, they had to search throughout the class to find a peer with that number of syllables. We love working with syllables!

K.RF.3.2: Orally segment words into syllables.

IMG_3936IMG_3938

This morning Arthur was interested in measuring things.  We started with measuring and comparing weight.  We brought out the scale and some materials of different weights.  We experimented with making the scale rise and fall.  We talked about what objects were heavy and which were light based on what we observed. Some of us were interested in balancing the scale and tried different combinations of objects to get the scale balanced evenly on either side.

IMG_3944IMG_3950IMG_3974IMG_3976

This morning we spent some time making patterns using unifix cubes during our welcome activity.  We flipped through the pattern book and worked on trying to create the patterns we saw.  After a while a group of kids wanted to make a very long line of unifix cubes.  We decided to create the challenge of stretching our line all the way across the house keeping area.  Not only did our group rise to the challenge but they did it twice!

Good Afternoon Families!

Hannah came in this morning saying she was interested in whirlpools (of all things, love how her mind works!).  We talked about how tides cause whirlpools in the ocean.   We also talked about how we might see small ones in our everyday life, like in the bathtub or in the toilet.  We created an experiment to see if we could make our own whirlpool. We tried several utensils to spin the soapy water until we made a whirlpool in the middle.  Once again, thank you Hannah for adding to our curriculum!

IMG_3826IMG_3831IMG_3846IMG_3890IMG_3832

Our welcome activity invited counting and sorting.  Friends gathered special jewels from the middle and could sort them by size shape or color if desired.  Numbers were provided for friends who wanted to create math problems or match numbers to amounts counted.

IMG_3836IMG_3883IMG_3885

First thing this morning Nesta came in talking about the Ballet class that she and Hannah had attended together.  Some younger friends were interested in what they were doing so the two girls decided to teach a little ballet class on the building rug.  Everyone loved it!

Good Afternoon!

We engaged in several different activities with another day inside away from the cold! We started with some housekeeping play, then moved on to building with the big, wooden blocks. Friends enjoyed sitting on the blocks to pretend they were on trains. Lastly, friends made a trail to follow with the textured stepping stones!

IMG_9204IMG_9195IMG_9218IMG_9219

Some of our younger friends enjoyed exploring our basket of Legos and Lego people.

IMG_9197IMG_9199IMG_9198

We ended our morning with puzzles in the kitchen with Ms. Bekah. As they completed their puzzles, they named the different colors and shapes that they recognized. Eleanor explored her first puzzle that had different color and shaped cars on it!

Happy Tuesday!

We were active in so many activities it was hard to choose what to highlight today.  We acted out the Beanie Bag dance song with the bean bags by Greg and Steve, we built with the color train, climbed on the habi-trail, rolled a ball, made music on the xylophone and pianos, made “ice cream” and snuggled on the pillow on the reading step.

IMG_9132IMG_9133IMG_9137IMG_9143IMG_9144IMG_9145IMG_9148IMG_9149IMG_9150IMG_9154

We then headed into the kitchen to engage with loose part wooden blocks of a variety of shapes and animals.  We had some small animals and added some of our larger animals to enhance our play.

Good Afternoon!

As PREK1 group came to sign in, they were asked to choose a colored notecard from the bottom of the sign in board. Once they chose a card, they counted how many items were on their card. Most children used their index finger as a guide when they were counting. Once they came to the number, they identified it on the board where they then taped the card under the correct number!

K.NS.4: Perform one to one correspondence tasks.

K.NS.5: Count up to 20 objects arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle. Count up to 10 objects in a scattered configuration.

IMG_3763IMG_3766IMG_3772

This morning we worked with letters.  In the sensory bin we added letters to the water table.  Older kids tried to identify which letters of the alphabet they didn’t see in the water…and of course they made alphabet soup!  In the art center we worked with letter stamps.  Several friends worked on stamping their name or first name letter.  One of our older friends loves putting the alphabet in order from A to Z so she worked on that project with her stamps.

IMG_3711IMG_3715IMG_3728IMG_3708IMG_3706

PREK2:  During group today we practiced yoga and deep breathing.  We read the story “Dr Seuss ABC” which does a good job of focusing on letter sounds.  After the story we came up to the board to identify and circle our name.
