Hello, 2024!

We hope everyone had a terrific winter break!

This morning a couple of friends encountered a problem…how to get the wheels for a building toy out from under the piano.  During the trial and error process we brought out some flashlights to help our hardworking friends see what they were trying to reach.  After several attempts with different materials our two friends were able to rescue the lost part.  What remained from this project was a strong interest in continuing to use the flashlights.  This lead to a set up for flashlight experimentation.  Don’t be surprised to see more of this later in the week since it was a popular activity!  Everyone enjoyed experimenting with changing the color of the light and illuminating translucent objects.

Adrian was interested in creating some math problems today, so we brought out the unifix cubes for him to use.  He enjoyed creating groups of numbers to multiply.  This drew interest form several other friends.  A group project evolved trying to see how long of a line could be created using the cubes.  It turned out to be a challenge to keep the line of cubes from breaking.  The group had to problem solve, dividing up the labor.  Some friends held the line of cubes together while others added more at the ends.  It took a whole team to make the project  successful!

Good Afternoon!

We started our morning with some dancing! We played, “The Beanie Bag Dance” and friends used their bean bags to follow the directions of the song!

Then, we moved into the kitchen for some sensory play! We used the remaining ice cubes from yesterday’s activity to do some ice fishing! We used magnets/magnetic fish and other sea animals to manipulate with the ice and animals.

Good Afternoon!

**Tomorrow is holiday/winter pajama and clothing day!

We all enjoyed a second day of the arctic/Antarctic sensory bin! We added some blue as a bit of novelty to spur new thoughts around imaginative play.  One of our friends decided it reminded her of a pool, so her penguins were spending the day at a swimming pool.

Several friends were feeling in the mood for puzzles today!  Arthur was proud of his work on the 24 piece puzzle stack.  He asked this morning if he could try the harder puzzles after mastering the foam puzzle difficulty level.  He had some help but was motivated to learn to do larger puzzles!

Albert was hard at work building all morning.  He built a “trap” using most of the blocks available.  He said the trap was designed to trap “him”…a little like playing yourself in a chess game:)  He enjoyed the challenge immensely !

Good Afternoon!

**Friday will be holiday pajama/clothing day!

PREK1 group members worked on counting syllables today for sign in! Each child pointed to a holiday word and we worked together to count the number of syllables in the word. Their goal was to find a two syllable word. When children chose the word ‘snow’, we found out that it didn’t work because snow is a one syllable word. When each child found a two syllable word, they circled the word and wrote their name next to the word.

We enjoyed a problem solving sensory/science experiment as our activity for the morning.  Friends were presented with a variety of arctic and Antarctic animals frozen in blocks or cubes of ice.  The goal was to melt our animals free of the ice.  Some friends first tried an eye dropper for the big blocks.  As this was tedious, they focused on the smaller penguin ice cubes.  Paige found that stirring them in water was the best solution and freed a few of the trapped birds.  Katherine felt that the water temperature was too cold for a successful melt, so she asked to try warm water.  After trying that,  she reported that the process was running more smoothly…in not so many words:)

In the art center, Cassie and our younger girls has a little painting party.  They enjoyed conversation around what they were painting!

IMG_3027IMG_3043IMG_3032IMG_3008

In PREK2 group today we sang the name song and clapped our name syllables.  We read the story “I Feel Silly” and reported how we were feeling today.  Some of us were more elaborate sharing about our feelings:)

Good Afternoon!

This morning friends engaged in a variety of activities.  Dax was a veterinarian and gave his bear a check up, Ben and Eden dressed up in dress up clothes and accessories, and Eleanor was busy getting water from the faucet into her cup.

IMG_8565IMG_8567IMG_8574IMG_8568

We then headed into the kitchen for a sensory experience with ice cubes.  We had a scoop, a cup and a bear on our tray.  While engaged in play, several friends shared what they were doing?  Dax shared his polar bear, “sit on ice.”  Another friend saw his ice cube melted on his tray and said, “make puddles.” Ben shared that he was using his scoop to “dump  it.”  It is wonderful to hear the friends sharing their thoughts to everyone on what they are doing.

Good Afternoon!

This morning the boys were building with the hollow blocks.  They added animals to enhance their play and were making the sounds of their animals.

IMG_8512IMG_8515IMG_8513

We then headed into the kitchen to decorate a large piece of paper with dot markers that we will use to wrap our special gift to our parents.

IMG_8528IMG_8532IMG_8534IMG_8547

Then most of us sat on the reading step or in a brown chair to engage in a book independently.

Good afternoon families!

Be sure to PICK UP YOUR CHILD’S HOLIDAY GIFT! They made the entire gift themselves all the way down to the wrapping paper, and cannot wait to give it to you!  The gift is  inside your child’s art cubby located above the regular cubies.

This morning we explored a magnetic welcome activity.  We looked at a couple of different models for building a house with the magnetic tiles in the center of the table which we could try building ourselves if we wanted to.  We decorated the magnetic creations with holiday bells.  Next we tested our creations with some imaginative play.  We could add people and cars to our creations and play as long as we wanted.  Several of us were able to add to the basic design expanding the possibilities.  There were two and three story houses, garages and even an rocket ship.

IMG_2803IMG_2822IMG_2877IMG_2862

In the art center we got to create using collage materials.  We used a variety of beads, pipe cleaners and paper shapes to make artwork.  Some of us made “name collages”.  We wrote our name and a teacher helped carefully trace it with glue.  We placed the collage items carefully trying to make our name.  Using pieced -together items of different shapes and sizes proved to be a fun and interesting challenge.

IMG_2869IMG_2856IMG_2857

PREK2:  Today during group time, we read the story “Mouse’s first Christmas”.  We listened carefully and tried to remember one thing that mouse saw as he explored the house on Christmas Eve.  At the end of the story we recalled what Mouse saw, and our teacher wrote it on the board.
