Today we conducted an experiment using ice and salt.  Several friends had asked why we put salt on the side walks so this experiment was inspired by those questions.  The kids were able to take the salt and sprinkle it onto blocks of ice,  watching as the salt created holes and tunnels.  After some melting had occurred everyone added drops of color using eye droppers.  As the color filled the melted tunnels everyone could clearly see how the salt had melted the ice in beautiful designs.  Many of our friends stayed for a long time thinking of ways to melt the ice further.  Some put the ice in bowls of colored water while others re-collected the colored water from the trays and poured jars of it over the ice.  Everyone had a chance to learn through this exploration.

“Play is the highest form of research.”

-Albert Einstein

So many activities, so little time. All of them are important to the growth and creative outlet to each child. Here are just a few of the MANY benefits of S.T.E.M. play. These are the things that are a part of our curriculum on a daily basis.

  • Conflict resolution
  • Regulating emotions
  • Problem-solving
  • Higher critical thinking skills
  • Builds self-esteem
  • Trial and error skills

Ms. Linsey removed the clothes line pins and replaced it with tape. Our friends made all sorts of structures. Maggie made a house for her animals. Adrian made a store with all the departments. There were quite a few aisles devoted to fruits and vegetables.

Happy Friday!

This morning we began by going many different directions in the classroom.  We slid down the slide, cooked food in housekeeping, drove the airplane with Little People, looked at a book and engaged with the Lego people.

IMG_5812IMG_5818IMG_5822IMG_5831IMG_5833IMG_5824

We then headed into the kitchen to paint with watercolor ice cubes.  We all enjoyed watching the colors melt onto our papers as we moved the ice cube around to create our paintings.  We will definitely have to do it again soon.  We all loved it!

Good Afternoon!

Today we celebrated a birthday!  Our friend, Ben turned 1 today.  We are so happy we were able to celebrate with you.  Thank you for the special birthday treat!  They were yummy and enjoyed by all.

This morning the friends engaged with a variety of our color and shape sorters.  They worked on their color recognition skills and sorting the shapes/wooden nesting cups by size with the biggest at the bottom to the smallest at the top.

IMG_5763IMG_5767IMG_5771IMG_5770IMG_5772IMG_5773

The majority of us then headed over to the cardboards boxes.  Arthur and Emily tossed balls into the box, while Dax and Hannah rolled their balls in and out of the boxes.  Ben and Eliza decided to crawl in and sit in them.

IMG_5778IMG_5780IMG_5785IMG_5782IMG_5781

We all then joined Miss Bekah on the reading step to have her read books to us.  After having Miss Bekah read to us for a while, we then chose to sit and look at a book independently.

Happy Groundhog’s Day!

Thankfully our weather isn’t dictated by a cute furry creature! It was nice however, to have a bright sunny day. Let’s all hope for warmer weather soon, so we can all go outside again.

The kinetic sand is such a big hit. There’s something fun and therapeutic about exploring it. The WF’s can sit there for quite a while manipulating it.

Ms. Linsey placed a tray of popsicle sticks and toy wolves for them to include in their play. Once they were done with that, she got out the kitchen toys.

This is our welcome activity today. We brought out popsicle sticks, cylinders, and bears. The rest of it was up to their imaginations in what they would create. We would say they are a pretty creative group.

IMG_3788(1)IMG_3792(1)IMG_3797(1)

We had an impromptu WF band this morning. One friend wanted to play the instruments, and the rest quickly followed. Some of them even added a song and dance with their music.

Breakfast: Oatmeal & raisins

Lunch: Farm eggs, whole wheat tortillas, green beans/cucumbers, and pineapple

PM Snack: Corn chips w/ hummus

Happy last day of January.  The month sure seemed to fly by.

This morning our friends were engaged with the new bean bags.  Miss Bekah found some different bean bag songs for us to do that we’ve heard before, but haven’t done in a while. We danced to the Beanie Bag Dance and the Bean Bag Boogie by Greg and Steve. We used our listening skills to follow along and place our bag on the part of our body the song told us to.

IMG_5678IMG_5676IMG_5675IMG_5674

We then headed into the kitchen to engage in a new sensory experience with ice cubes, a frozen sponge and a variety of different animals. We were all busy exploring the feel of the ice in our hands or in our mouth. Some of us felt how stiff our sponge was when it was frozen. We then used it to clean our animals or blot and soak up the puddles of water on our trays as the ice cubes began to melt.  We all loved it!
