Happy Friday!

In pre-k/k group, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by reading, ‘Thidwick, the Big Hearted Moose’. It’s a book we’ve read before but it’s been a while. Our older friends remembered very specific details and when these events occurred. For those of our friends who hadn’t read it before, they predicted what was going to happen a couple of times throughout the story.

A STEM project was offered at the art table this morning. Children used the following materials: pipe cleaners, coins, and play dough. They created rainbows using the play dough and pipe cleaners. A few of our older friends did this but then added to it. They put the plastic cup in the middle of the rainbow and added coins one at a time to see how many coins the structure would hold.

Maddie kept with the coin theme and sorted them into four cups: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. She and Lucy discussed the similarities and differences that they noticed in each of the coins.

Good Afternoon!

In our pre-k/k group, we read one of our favorites: ‘Three Cheers for Tacky’. We have read it several times and in many parts of the story, children finished the sentence before I could! They’re comprehension of the story and the events that occurred were very impressive.

At the end of the story, we talked about the setting of the story. Maddie raised her hand and commented, “It was outside. It looked cold!”. This lead into an activity that we did which revolved around four words: cold, hot, lighter, and heavier. We compared items and used descriptive words while building two sets of lists.

First, we made a list of ‘cold thing’s’ and ‘hot things’. Then, we made a list of ‘lighter things’ and ‘heavier things’. We came across a dilemma though. Maxwell said we should put ‘books’ in the lighter category. A friend said, “Not all books are lighter!”. So, we put ‘books’ in both categories!

After we had completed both lists, we counted up the totals for each category!

It was an exciting end to group time as we got to flip the calendar..it’s always an exciting time! Smile

K.M.1: Make direct comparisons of the length, capacity, weight, and temperature of objects, and recognize which object is shorter, longer, taller, heavier, warmer, cooler, or holds more.

Our welcome activity dealt with the measurement of items using wooden squares. Grady noted that the pencil was four squares long while Maddie realized that the bug wasn’t the longest on any of the boards! She was right!

The art table was full this morning as we used pipe cleaners and a variety of beads to make necklaces and bracelets. A few children incorporated patterns into their creation which others just chose their favorite colors.

The art easel was requested so several friends took turns painting. When everyone was done painting, Lucy and Anna both asked if they could clean the easel.

A peer of theirs joined them and the three of them did a great job working together to get the easel clean!

We made our own music as we played the pianos and xylophones.

Good Afternoon!

One of the most popular spaces in our environment is the reading area. There are a handful of children who would stay there for the entire day and listen to stories if they had the chance. This is a key building block for language development, reading, and writing (just to name a few). Children not only listen to several stories day in and day out but recognize print throughout the environment whether it’s reading cubby tags or words on the ‘site word’ window. Most of our children recognize letters based on their peers names. We can overhear our three year old friend Franklin say, “Oh that’s a ‘G’! A ‘G’ for Grady!”.

I’ve attached an article that explains the several benefits of not only reading to infants but continuing that trend well past five years of age.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we were busy talking on the telephone to our mommy’s and daddy’s.  Daniel and Mack had Miss Marty join in on their conversations. She let them know how our day was going.

DSCN0215DSCN0219

We were so excited to go outside.  We played with balls, used the diggers in the rocks to scoop and move the logs, played peek-a-boo out the window of the house, rode a bike and climbed up the rocks to get to the top of the slides.  After a while, we had to go to the deck to look into the door of the other classroom to see when our older friends were going to come out and join us.

Good Afternoon! What a great Monday we had with warm weather and sunshine.

We all enjoyed sitting down to look at a book independently or with a friend. One friend made up their own story as they flipped through the pages of their book.

DSCN0163DSCN0164DSCN0168DSCN0194

A few friends were using their imaginative skills while cooking as they stirred or shook up the pretend food that was in their bowl or pot. Once it was finished they pretended to eat it.

DSCN0171DSCN0184DSCN0185

We used many forms of movement on the slide today. We slid down on our bottoms,  walked down and crawled up.

We enjoyed going outside this afternoon and seeing all of the friends from the other classroom!

Good Afternoon!

In our pre-k/k group, we read a ‘Frog and Toad’ story titled ‘Shivers’. Frog told Toad a scary ghost story and throughout the story, we talked about whether we thought the scary ghost story was real or made-up. Children used the words ‘fiction’ and ‘nonfiction’ when expressing their thoughts. We stopped at several spots in the story and predicted what was going to happen next. Lucy used contextual clues and pictures to help predict what was going to happen next.

Children also used their growing knowledge of the relationship between Frog and Toad to guide their thoughts about this story. We are getting to know Frog and Toad individually along with the ins and outs of their relationship.

K.RL.2.4: Make predictions about what will happen in a story.

K.RL.2.1: With support, ask and answer questions about main topics and key details in a text heard or read.
