Good afternoon!

This morning, Eleanor and Charlotte shared smiles while using their imaginative skills to pretend to cook in the play kitchen. A friend explored the bucket people at the table and Cece engaged with the toys that dangle from her play mat.

IMG_7339(3)IMG_7340(3)IMG_7360(3)IMG_7341(3)

We made our way to the kitchen to paint with brushes on the art easel. Our friends painted with red, green, blue and white on a long sheet of paper. They watched as the colors mixed on their canvas to make new colors or to make their color lighter with the white paint.

We then headed outside to take advantage of the nice weather this morning. Our friends took turns going down the slide, riding the teeter-totter and walking on the balance beam course.

Happy Tuesday!

It was voting day! Our kiddos were so excited to exercise their vote and once they realized that they could possibly help choose what we would have for lunch, they became very excited! We put two heavy weights up against each other: English muffin pizzas and ham/cream cheese rollups.

We had one child vote at a time and explained the voting process. Once they cast their vote, they picked what sticker they wanted.

Once all of the votes were cast, our two oldest kids helped me count and tally up the votes. By a vote of 10-6, English muffin pizza was the winner. And post lunch, our bellies were VERY happy.

In PREK1 group, we had one more opportunity to vote and make our voice heard. Two books about the President were on the ballot: ‘I Want To Be President’ and ‘Arthur Meets The President’. We have six group members and at the end of the vote, it was tied! So Cassie broke the tie and chose ‘Arthur Meets the President’.

Good Afternoon!

This morning we engaged putting pegs into our pegboards.  We were given 2 colors and Miss Bekah showed us how to make a pattern with our colors.  We then worked at making a pattern with them and stacking them into tall towers.

IMG_7299(2)IMG_7305(3)IMG_7306(3)IMG_7309(2)IMG_7310(3)

Since it was too wet from the rain to go outside,  we crawled through a tunnel and climbed up the tiny turf stairs and slide.

IMG_7315(2)IMG_7318(2)IMG_7317(3)IMG_7320(2)IMG_7323(2)IMG_7327(2)IMG_7329(3)

We then engaged in building our mix or match magnetic animals.  Some of the friends told the teachers what kind of animal they were making and the sound of the animal.

Happy Monday!

We kicked off our week in PREK1 group by completing a sign in focused on counting items in a set. One child noted that the first group had eight stars because “four plus four equals eight.”. Others used their index fingers to count the stars in each group, displaying their one to one correspondence skills.

K.NS.6: Recognize set of 1 to 10 objects in patterned arrangements and tell how many without counting.

Tomorrow is voting day at Wee Friends. It’s a very important day where we’ll learn about the voting process. We’ll be voting on something very near and dear to our hearts: food (specifically lunch!).

A few of our older friends worked together to decorate our voting booth. They used the colors black, red, and blue and wrote things like “vote” and “USA” all over the booth. We can’t wait to see the results tomorrow!

IMG_6022IMG_6028(6)

This morning we offered a letter matching activity that could be explored in several ways depending on developmental level.  Younger friends matched letters they found in the basket with the alphabet card on their tray.  Older kids were able to pick out word cards and spell the words they saw on the cards.  Some chose to find their first name letter or spell their entire names.  Some chose to work alone and others chose to work with a partner.  Everyone was able to use the materials to match their own developmental level.

IMG_5960(3)IMG_6033(4)IMG_6018(5)IMG_5976(5)IMG_5995(5)

In the art center several friends continued with building projects.  Arthur and Ryan worked together to build a “table”.

IMG_5939IMG_5950

PREK2: During group we read the story “I Like Myself”.  After the story we each thought of something we were good at.  Not surprisingly, Arthur said he was good at “building a table”.

We engaged with a playdough sensory experience.  We used our tools to cut and manipulate the dough.  Eleanor used her craft stick to pick up her playdough creation off of her tray.

IMG_7210(3)IMG_7213(3)IMG_7217(3)IMG_7220(3)IMG_7222(3)

We then headed out to build with Magna-Tiles.  We stacked them and connected them in a line on the floor.

IMG_7226(3)IMG_7229(3)IMG_7232(3)IMG_7237(3)

We headed outside to go down the slide, explore the feel of the jewels in housekeeping, drive the plastic construction trucks, bend over the balance beam to play with the rocks and scoop and poured the sand.

Happy Friday!

We celebrated Amelia’s birthday today as she turned FOUR! We hope you had the best birthday!

IMG_5923(4)

We had a special treat today as a friends family celebrated the holiday of Diwali and brought a story in to share with the class about the holiday.  Everyone enjoyed listening to the story “Binny’s Diwali” and learning about the Indian festival of lights!

IMG_5916(4)

Our day was very much emergent curriculum as friends worked on self directed projects in the art center and building areas.  Teachers assisted with problem solving conversations.  Teachers also asked questions and provided materials to help ideas take shape!  This type of emergent curriculum teaching is deeply meaningful and follows our Wee Friends philosophy on fostering conditions for child lead learning.

WF Happy Halloween 10/31/2024

Happy Halloween!

We had a fun Halloween morning full of festive activities!  We opened a pumpkin, removed the seeds, and roasted them for a healthy and delicious snack!  We tried two flavors: coconut oil/cinnamon and garlic/salt.  The Cinnamon was the favorite!  We were able to continue enjoying the pumpkin when we were finished removing seeds, as we hammered it full of golf tees!

IMG_5786(6)IMG_5794(5)IMG_5813(7)

In the art center we created Halloween stamp paintings with orange glitter!

IMG_5759(4)IMG_5736(6)

In the sensory bin we mixed “witches brew” using black water color paint, shaving cream and water!

Good Afternoon!

This morning Eleanor asked to get the pumpkin down.  We rolled the pumpkin back and forth with Miss Tina.  Cece even joined in to observe the pumpkin and touch it with her feet.

We then pulled out our plastic blocks to sit in and sing Row, Row, Row Your Boat.

IMG_6943(3)IMG_6948(3)IMG_6949(3)IMG_6950(2)IMG_6952(3)IMG_6953(3)

We then headed into the kitchen for a sensory experience with shaving cream and our big plastic bug.  We used our hands to spread the shaving cream all over our plastic bug and our space at the table.

IMG_6963(3)IMG_6964(3)IMG_6966(3)IMG_6967(3)IMG_6969(3)

Since it was such a beautiful and warm Fall morning, we headed outside to enjoy our Wee Sprout before we play.  We then scooped up the sand with our containers, worked on using a rake to rake the leaves, went down the slide or sat at the bottom, and engaged with the baby dolls.

Good Afternoon!

In the last few weeks, we’ve had conversations with a few families about children talking about the mindful activities at school. We wanted to share with everyone how we implement these activities and why we use them.

Within the last few years, we’ve assembled a collection of “mindful activities” that we offer only at specific times such as a child getting hurt, needing an alone/calm down activity, or simple when a child is upset and needing a reset. We do not allow these activities to be used all of the time because then they lose their “luster” and purpose. Children know when they have a hard time leaving their parent in the morning at drop off or when they get hurt outside, that they can ask for a calm down toy to have at the island—this really helps all of our kids by having an option to turn to when in distress!

We have a variety of activities for a wide range of children. Our younger friends (and really our older kids too!) love exploring our different kinds of putty. We have the ‘thinking putty’ which has animals or sea creatures in putty so children are able to search for specific animals. The other putty changes colors as it’s moved through warm hands. We also have a few different breathing activities where children use their finger to follow along as they work through their breathing. Our older peers have been enjoying the activities that allow them to explore letters. One of  the favorites lately is spelling words using letter cubes.

If you have any questions about what calming activity your child leans towards here or need help implementing a system at home or identifying a specific tool/where to find it, we’d love to chat with you about what works for us here at school!
