WF Monday 5/11

Here at Wee Friends we don’t mind a little precipitation—it makes for better grub hunting! Today friends scoured the backyard, turning over stones and logs, searching for worms and roly polies.

Once we found what we were looking for, we had to show other friends too.

In other exciting backyard news, a bird family has chosen one of our hanging gourds to make a nest in!

We hope the birds stay put and we can watch them grow, just like our Wee Friends.

Dandelion Honey Bread filled our senses, our classroom and our curiosity. With dandelions plucked from the farm, friends measured, stirred, examined and smelled a dandelion bread recipe to the oven. It will be shared at snack, so don’t forget to ask your WF about his/her experience!

Staff News: We want to share that a paper Jessica wrote about her experience in Teach For America has officially been published. Her piece, The TFA Bait and Switch: From “You’ll Be Making a Difference” to “You’re Making Excuses,” is the opening chapter in the book Teach For America Counter-Narratives: Alumni Speak Up and Speak Out, coming out in June.

We also picked a whole bag full of dandelions!

Later, after nap and snack time were over, we set to work plucking the petals off of all the dandelions we collected. The petals are edible and we have several recipes to experiment with this week, including dandelion bread.

Good Afternoon!

Friends utilized the small house this morning. It got moved so the new placing of the house was a big thrill! Maya, Tate, and Nahla worked in the house and Maya let everyone know, “We’re making coffee!” Tate was generous enough to let Miss Mindy sample it.

Tate saw that there were new blue and green bouncy balls that were in bins! Everyone got a ball and proceeded to throw them around the backyard. We definitely worked our legs as we chased them!

Maya sat on the bench with two baby dolls. She took one in her arms and said, “This baby is sad!” Through conversations with Miss Mindy, Maya realized the baby was upset because she needed a diaper change. And she missed her Mommy and Daddy of course!

Franklin enjoyed played with multiple toys while on the baby jungle gym. Annabelle was giving him some soft nudges and a few BIG smiles!

WF Tuesday 5/5

At Wee Friends it is always interesting to see the inventive and imaginative ways in which friends will use the materials we provide. Two different friends, based on their age and interests, may have radically different ways of approaching the same material.

For instance, today both Maddie and Elliott chose to work with the little colored people. Maddie sorted them by color into different cups, while Elliott connected the people into lines.

035 036

Same material, two different ways of sorting and learning!

Happy Tuesday – Jessica
