Happy Monday!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Most of us came back with a little runny nose and cough. For that reason, it was a pretty low key morning full of stories and building with blocks.

Rosemary and Anna worked together to get the waffle blocks out. Rosemary looked at two blocks that were different: one with a hole in the middle and one that was solid without any holes.

Hey, old friend
What d’ya say, old friend?
Are you okay, old friend?
Are we, are we unique?
Time goes by
Everything else keeps changing
You and I, we can
Continue next week.
Most friends fade
Or they don’t make the grade
New ones are quickly made
And in a pinch, sure, they’ll do.
But us, old friend
What’s to discuss, old friend?
Here’s to us, who’s like us?
Darn few.

-Stephen Sondheim

Is there anything that compares to the reunion of good friends? The Blue Bus comes close. Math FAB K. 1.5 Divide shapes into equal parts? Ummm….not even close.

Finn. Finn is in the house. And that’s all there is to say today.

WF Friday 1/16

Our environment is based upon the idea of choice. For much of the day, friends are free to move from area to area as they please. It is always interesting to see where friends choose to spend their time.

Today, some friends spent time in the back constructing a house, building with Legos and driving cars.

                        011

Other friends hung baby clothes on the clothesline in our housekeeping area, practicing opening and closing those tricky clothespins!

012

And still other friends sat at the island trying to master straw weaving, manipulating yarn over and under, over and under straws.

013

Yet no matter what area of the house we choose to play and work in we are always learning, exploring and growing.

Have a great weekend! –Jessica

WF Thursday 1/15

Hello! Here’s a quick reminder that the WF Annual Conferences will be Friday, March 6, 2015. Wee Friends will be closed this day. Tami will make sign up sheets available mid-February.

Clothespins, cookbooks and dominoes dominated our learning environment today. IN/OUT, UP/DOWN, AROUND were some of the concepts we explored. Numeral identification and color recognition were others. Add pinching, grasping, pulling (not each other)and choosing and we cooked up a pretty interesting (and happy) morning. Have a great day.-Laurie

WF Wednesday 1/14 The Power of the Pony (or not)

004

It’s 7:45am and WF is ready for friends. “Let’s continue our tally work.” thinks the teacher. “Hmmmmm….could this learning experience be a bit more inviting?” she wonders. “Ponies! Yes. That will definitely bring them to the table. Bright, sparkling, purple ponies.” Waiting. Waiting. No one touches the ponies. Almost no one touches the tallies. The Power of the Ponies has failed. But it did induce a good laugh. Onward we went to creating a compass and an uppercase/lowercase spinning game. Morphing to our WF interest and direction. With or without the ponies….we press on to the Light of Learning.

WF Tuesday 1/13 The Excitement of New Materials

***BLUE BUS SIGN UP HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH THIS WED 1/13/15.

We currently have only 3 children enrolled for this session.  Our minimum class number is 6 children for the Blue Bus to continue to come to Wee Friends.  So, if you are interested, you will need to sign up today or tomorrow.  Otherwise, if not enough families are interested in this extracurricular activity, we will take a break from it and check back in the spring.  The cost is $80 for 8 weeks.  The class is Mondays 9:00-9:30.

The Excitement of New Materials

Tuesday morning started off with a flurry of excitement. New Legos! Friends helped Melinda sort a huge batch of building blocks into various bins. Whether it’s new materials or simply newly rediscovered materials, we are always eager to see what innovative things friends will do.

                                           002

Materials used in a new way or in a different setting are also exciting! This morning Laurie led friends through a counting, adding and subtracting activity with dominos and dot painters at the art table.

                                          009

013

A recently discovered tool from the basement are paper punchers. We practiced identifying shapes, threading paper and then pressing down (hard!) to punch. We love collecting our tiny shapes in envelopes to share at home.

020 027

Just because there are new materials or tools out and about at Wee Friends, it doesn’t mean we forget our primary pastime: playing with and enjoying the company of our friends.
